Good morning gang...happy July 4th to all my American friends, hope you guys have a great day!

Tiny C: Canada is not as well organized as the US as our nation's birthday is July 1st which means that this year we had Wednesday as a holiday instead of a Monday/Friday...very very stupid in my opinion...

Just got home

from a fishing trip up Nordt (That's North in Minnesotan, eh).
One of those trips were we'll laugh next year.

BUT!!! I planned to leave last Friday right? But what happens? MJ has to die. I'm sorry. But had he waited 24 hours I would have been gone. As it was, I was on the phone all of Thursday night with customers wanting to know when they could have product. Then Friday up till 2PM. That's when I just had to leave and say sorry, talk to someone else.

I was going to log on tonight and check emails, but I'm still on vacation and frankly don't give a damn.

Happy Birthday to BC and Wayen.
And a great holiday weekend to all (except Joel). But actually, I think CA has a holiday this week as well. So I take that back. You too, Joel.

Later.

Weirdest thing just happened. I logged on to my facebook page and to the right was a friend suggestion to add Curtis. How in the world did facebook know to suggest Curtis as a friend? As far as I know, we don't have any common friends, don't live anywhere near each other, aren't members of any similiar groups on facebook.....odd.

Mulally: Ford boosting production to meet demand

CajunMike: It's nice to see the CEO from Ford knows what he is doing... I can tell you the new Ford Escape Hybrid I had for 3 months before my company car came, which is a Jeep. The Escape got much better gas milage of course, it was larger and rode better. I know what my next car will be if I get a chance to pick it out. :)

Show me an entertainer even half as talented and iconic as MJ who WASN'T (or isn't) a nutcase.
Elvis, Lenon, Cobain, one could go on and on... they all had their demons/issues.
I was never a huge fan of his music, even back in the day. But no one can say, regardless of how weird/crazy he was, that he wasn't one of the most gifted, talented, amazing performers ever to walk the Earth (or the moon... lol). The main could PERFORM. If you ever saw him live, it wouldn't matter if you liked his songs or hated them, you would be impressed and entertained. 'nuff said.

The moron who built it (father in law's buddy) didn't leave spaces between the boards for the water to drain so there are a few soft spots and a couple of holes. Worst part is is that we used mahogany for the decking instead of plain old PT.

BIG AL: Sorry to hear that, but I bet it felt damn good to say that to him! I have been basically told the same thing since Jan. I had a good paying job calling on the ER/OR and took a risk and went with a start up Biotech company. Well for the first time in my life it is the biggest mistake I have ever made as far as jobs go. Weekly or boss tells us on one had we are doing a good job, and then threatens us that we will loose our jobs if we don't get our sales up. I have an interview next week and I would love to tell him to stick it as well, but with 3 small kids and my income being the main source I have to suck it up and deal with his BS, hopefully not for too long. Stress is the worst I have ever experienced in my life and hopefully my stress never comes over too strongly on here as I am sure I have been set off by things that would never bother me, so sorry for that.

BIG AL: I'm with ya buddy, my job is over as of 6/30. My boss has slowly been getting rid of all the employees one by one. Although he denies any "hidden agendas", we all can see that there's nothing "hidden" about it.
He came into the company 6 years ago and never really got along with us all that well.
So....as of next wednesday I'm out on the streets, so to speak. A 1 year old and a 4 year old at home. Only upside is that, like you, I have a ton of stuff that needs to be done at home (deck repair, painting, etc) that I never had time for before.
And you're right..it can be a good thing. My wife keeps telling me that everything happens for a reason and understands that this is not my fault.
Hang in there, buddy!
BIG AL ( 75.57.220.248 ) at 5:14 PM EST Wednesday, June 24, 2009

I guess I can tell you guys finally that I'm unemployed. I'm not on unemployment so your taxes are safe. The boss cancelled my Christmas bonus 3 years ago, 2 years ago he stopped paying holidays, this year he took away my 3 weeks paid vacation, and he was talking about not paying commission. That put my salary around my 1978 income. When I complained he basically said he could do what he wants because the economy is so bad I'll never get a job anywhere else. The stress level was more than my salary, so I laughed in his face, and told him to stick his pathetic job up his ass. The wife agreed, so I'm "temporarily retired" until my back feels better. I'm just trying do all the jobs around the house that have been waiting. No sympathy for me, it's a good thing. (I hope)
CajunMike ( 68.226.210.53 ) at 5:06 PM EST Wednesday, June 24, 2009

BIG AL: Yep and it will be a lesson learned. it sounds great though they way they tried to sell it. "You and I are shareholders as tax payers". If they were to become profitable would we get a dividend check? It's just a matter of time before they are right back to needing another 50 to 100 billion or it's over and we will wish we could go back to the fall of 2008 and made a different decision on the first bailout. Bush gave them 30 billion so he could kick that can down the road to the new administration.
BIG AL ( 75.57.220.248 ) at 4:58 PM EST Wednesday, June 24, 2009

CajunMike; If nobody is buying their cars, they won't be able to buy back shares, and I doubt you'll see anyone else buying their shares either. I heard Ford is trying a different tact overseas, and now here.

http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/ford-bailout-free-but-still-begging/

I'm not arguing your point. You may very well be right, just throwing out another possibility. I've never bought a new car in my life, and doubt I ever will, so I'm just looking out for my taxes. I DEFINATELY don't agree with how the government is handling things.
CajunMike ( 68.226.210.53 ) at 3:07 PM EST Wednesday, June 24, 2009

BIG AL: When they sell their shares back to GM or on the open market. I'm not buying anything from a business that politicians are pulling the levers on behind the scenes. That is not capitalism, that's socialism. Russians are mocking us right now. There was a story on Pravda a month or so ago where a Russian historian and columnist was stating that we were descending into Marxism at a faster pace than the old Soviet Union did.

Firing CEO's, naming a car czar who is only 30 years old, no experience in the auto industry and hasn't finished law school yet but he was active with Obama's campaign. First debtors bullied by the Obama administration and illegally pushed to back of the line, UAW getting close to 20 percent of ownership. No thanks, I'm not participating with my wallet even though there are more than a few GM models that I really like. I just finished my first year of a three year lease on my Infiniti and I think I'm going to scale down on my next lease. I enjoy my vehicle immensely but I've got higher priorities coming up. I will likely lease a Ford or Lincoln next time.
BIG AL ( 75.57.220.248 ) at 1:47 PM EST Wednesday, June 24, 2009

BC; It's not that I'm optimistic, just trying to figure out how this could possibly work. I can look at it as an investor, or I can look at it like I've been robbed. Either way I'm screwed, but as an investor there's a chance. So how do we make the best of that investment?
BIG AL ( 75.57.220.248 ) at 1:43 PM EST Wednesday, June 24, 2009

CajunMike; "until that 50-percent government ownership is no more"
and how will that happen?
CajunMike ( 68.226.210.53 ) at 1:24 PM EST Wednesday, June 24, 2009

BIG AL: I guess the same arguement can be made if you make sure you take every tax deduction available to you every year. Go read autoblog and the responses to the almost daily posts about GM and bailouts. Most people are saying they won't hesitate to buy a Ford product but they won't consider buying GM until that 50-percent government ownership is no more. It's not simply a republican stance either. Gallup posted a survey result a few weeks ago that showed that people who considered themselves to be "conservative" was the nation's largest self identifying group at 40%. That 40% consisted of many who are registered democrat.

My voice was not heard on the bailouts, it wasn't heard on letting businesses fail (which is a good thing and the normal evolution of a capitalistic system). My voice wasnt heard on busting the unions up and it wasn't heard on TARP and that baloney stimulus that hasnt stimulated anything because less than 10 percent of it has been spent so far.

Where I can be heard is with my own wallet and my own spending and that's how many Americans are letting their voices heard. If politicians want home sales to increase, if they want Americans to quit hording their money and start spending again, etc.. Then they better get out of that Washington D.C. bubble and start listening to folks.

BYork: Nice. I really like the San Luis Obispo area.
BC ( 166.50.66.214 ) at 11:57 AM EST Wednesday, June 24, 2009

BIG AL: You are more optimistic than me. I don't think it will matter, the gubrment will screw it up regardless. And the tax payers will take it in the arse in the end.
BIG AL ( 75.57.220.248 ) at 11:49 AM EST Wednesday, June 24, 2009

CajunMike; By boycotting GM, are we punishing the government, or the taxpayers that support the government? If nobody buys GM, then is the government going to continue to pump taxpayer's money into it, or let it collapse waisting all that money? Aren't we better off if everyone buys from GM, puts it back on it's feet, so GM can "buy" itself back from the government, and pay back the taxpayers?

CajunMike: A lot of this started taking place before Obama came into office, the first bailout money started with Bush and then it got even worse with Obama so the idiots are on both sides of the fence on this. The huge problem if GM would have went down, is the economy would have been in a huge world of hurt, far worse than it is now. Almost every company lately is using the Fear tactic. My current boss uses that shit daily with us, and right now it works because people are afraid of loosing there jobs. I agree with you, bankruptcy should have been the only option.
CajunMike ( 68.226.210.53 ) at 7:37 PM EST Tuesday, June 23, 2009

Joe: Political issues are not your fault, but there was tons of foolishness leading up to all of this. The cars are fine and I totally agree with everything Lutz was saying. I follow Autoblog and I know what GM has coming down the pike.

From my side of the political aisle, I believe bankruptcy should have been the first and only option. Had that taken place, I think things would be much more positive. All of the fear tactics of suppliers going out of business if GM were to file bankrupt was just that. Lies and fear tactics.

The American people are pissed about their money being squandered. I stated on this board early last fall that it was stupid (republicans voted for it too) and that the money would get burned through fast and GM/Chrysler would be back asking for more.. Sure enough, those billions were gone within several months.

Now you have a state run car company which is unacceptable. Now you have unions being paid and rewarded ahead of bond holders who were pushed illegally to the back of the line. When Rush Limbaugh goes on the air and tells people to boycott GM because by buying a GM product is supporting Obama's socialist policy, he's just reiterating what a lot of people were already feeling, myself being one of them. I'm not rewarding the idiots in Washington for their foolish decision. Those politicians are going to have to answer to history and the voters over this one.

Paramount launches Sapphire Series line of premium Blu-ray releases

Promising the finest Corinthian Leather picture and sound, Paramount is launching its Sapphire Series, two disc high definition releases of some of its greatest films, starting with Gladiator and Braveheart September 1 followed by Forrest Gump in November. That means a Dolby TrueHD 5.1 audio track for Braveheart and DTS-HD MA for Gladiator, while both will have a slew of exclusive new extras. For Gladiator that includes the ability to tag elements while watching the main disc, which will then automatically queue up more information once the second supplemental disc is loaded into the player, while Braveheart's extras focus mostly on the history of the Scottish Rebellion with 3D models and interactive timelines. Paramount didn't mention how much viewers would be paying for these new feature packed editions but they both show a $39.99 MSRP / $27.99 preorder price on Amazon. The press release runs down the extras, though we suspect you'll have to be a pretty big fan (of which there should be plenty for these multiple Oscar winning flicks) to pay the premium over typical catalog releases instead of waiting for them to hit the bargain bin.

Not good. I know many people who are not far right in their political thinking who say they will not buy another GM product due to the government taking them over. Many want to send a message to Washington D.C.

POLL: 54% of Americans against Cash for Clunkers, 59% expect GM quality to dip under gov't. ownership

by Chris Paukert on Jun 23rd 2009 at 2:29PM

America's "Cash for Clunkers" bill is on the cusp of being signed by President Obama, but according to a new survey by Rasmussen Reports, a majority of U.S. citizens aren't in favor of the plan.

According to the telephone survey, fully 54% of those queried are against the measure, while 35% are in favor and 12% aren't sure how they feel about it. That's up from a similar survey done last month, in which just 34% were against consumer vouchers for trading in older, less efficient cars and trucks. In fairness, Rasmussen Reports indicates that the change could have been influenced by a change in the wording of the respective surveys (the initial survey did not indicate how much the program might cost the government).

While that news may not perk up the spirits of Capitol Hill, the survey's findings that 17% of those asked say they are "very likely" to purchase a new vehicle this year because of the program (and a further 18% admit they are somewhat likely) ought to cheer up a few members of Congress.

Perhaps most interesting of all is news that many Americans would appear to have little faith in the ability of the government to help General Motors improve its fortunes, with 41% expecting for GM's quality to deteriorate under federal ownership. (Presumably, this leaves 59% of those surveyed that feel otherwise or are undecided). Perhaps more damaging is that the study's findings say that fully 57% of those questioned believe that the government is likely to pass laws and regulations that give Chrysler and General Motors unfair advantages over other automakers that did not receive bailout funds.

Oddly, Rasmussen Reports' findings to not disclose the number of people it surveyed, or any +/- accuracy estimates. Perhaps one has to have a 'premium membership' to get access to that data. In any case, check out the link for more of the study's findings.

So far I have only replaced two movies that I own a DVD copy of and that's "Batman Begins" and "Seabiscuit". In the winter they will release the Lord of the Rings trilogy on Blu-ray but it's the theatrical cuts only. No way am I buying that, whereas I double-dipped with that series on DVD.

It's amazing how much space the new OSs uses. My sister-in-law's laptop had a bad hard drive, and I had a spare 20GB laying around. Popped it in and had 4gb extra space after loading XP. SP3 loaded with updates, and it had 256mb left. Had to uninstall SP3 so it had space for a paging file. If you put in a partition to dual boot or whatever, be sure to leave space for the sevice packs!

Gar: Not sure what the minimum requirments are but i do know they're much lower than Vista. I have visited a lot of Netbook blogs and from what i've read Win7 is running fine with the Intel Atom and just one gig ram. Although a few have said xp seems to be a little quicker. Next fall netbooks will ship with Win7 installed (probably a lite version). I've upgraded my netbook to 2gig so i shouldn't have a problem. All you guys will be proud of me cuz i have the only netbook thats HT certified LOL just kidding there's no such certification but it comes close. the following short video is a must, this is the one i got for Fathers Day LOL.

My father-in-law just bought a new Sony Bravia 37" LCD so I bought him an HDMI cable to hook up his DVD player and calibrated his TV using Digital VE.

He only bought a new one because he was tired of everyone being green on the old set....and he had been doing that for 2 weeks!

Windows 7

I've read a lot of positive reviews about win7rc and earlier beta releases. From what i've read yes it borrows a lot from vista in fact if you download win7 and you can't find a correct driver or your having an incompatable driver problem almost 100% of vista's drivers are fully compatable with win7. Again from what i've read on the blogs win7 appears to be more stable and much less of a resource hog. And it is for that reason that Netbooks are pre loaded with XP or Linux. Most Netbooks including the Samsung i just purchased are running the Intel Atom processer wich is suprisingly quick although i did pop out the 1gig ram stick and installed 2gig (crucial). Although i like and i'm very familure with xp i would like to load win7 in Oct when it's officially released. What i need to decide is whether to replace xp or create a partition and dual boot. Right now i'm leaning towards a dual boot, i have plenty of room on my HD...

BIG AL ( 75.57.215.202 ) at 3:37 PM EST Friday, June 19, 2009

BC; To be fair, it's for sharing the files online, not downloaded, but no less ridiculous. Especially when you see the very small list of songs. Even their settlement offer of $9250 per song was ridiculous. The RIAA would be a much more respectable entity if they went with small fines and jail time. It just seems like they're padding lawyer fees.
BC ( 166.50.66.214 ) at 2:13 PM EST Friday, June 19, 2009

So what do you guys think about the girl getting fined $80,000 per illegally downloaded song? I think it's totally asinine. I'm basing that on the value/dollar amount of what was stolen (a .99 song) relative to the penalty.

Kieran; The transition to digital may have improved your level of happiness, but on the retail side it's a stress monster. There's one old guy who's son told him he needs a converter box. He bought a new 32" LCD 6 months ago, and it's HD. I've seen the manual. He comes in twice a week for about an hour to have me show him in the manual that he's HD capable, and doesn't need a box. He's told me it says on the screen that he's getting HD, but his son insists. However he won't buy one, he just keeps coming in to "discuss" it. It amazes me how someone will plop down big money for a TV, car, jewelry, etc...., but they obsess over every scrap of info they see/hear about a free-$20 converter box.

Personally I don't care if it's the left, right, red, or blue side of politics, if they infringe on my right to happiness, I'm against them.

DTV "transition"

Tony C:: Yeah, I haven't paid a TV bill in a few years now. I don't miss cable or dss a bit (well except when the occasional bad weather makes the OTA signal go bad).

Most of the cable content that I might want is available online anway, and with the XBMC box, we can watch most web-based video on the HT plasma.

The funny part is that I pay for cable internet, with no TV. Just the internet. But the uber-basic "broadcast" cable signal comes through on the cable line along with the internet signal. So if I plug the cable into the TV, we get all the broadcast (OTA) channels but via cable (including all the local HD versions). I don't usually use this backup plan though, because it has no programming information, and the channel numbers are screwy. But if you're watching a good show and the OTA signal does go out, it's nice to have the backup plan.

Interestingly, the DTV transition improved my reception on a few channels. A lot of the channels changed their frequency to one that I get better, and/or increased their broadcast power.

Kieran: My son doesn't pay for any TV. We installed an antenna a few weeks ago and got most of the digital channels in. I'm waiting to see if CBS can now be brought it digitally. In the past, CBS was always the toughest analog signal to get in Chicagoland.

Le Mans

This being the weekend of Le Mans, I watched the movie "Le Mans" with Steve McQueen last night. Funny thing is that the movie is supposed to depict the 1970 race and the dates of the race were June 13 and 14. This year, the dates of the race were June 13 and 14. That's a great movie.

Anyone here using an antenna for OTA reception?

It's kind of cool to finally see all the analog stations go black, after years of promises and threats it's finally done.

There are still a few analog stations broadcasting. But it's funny what's on: A continuous loop which in not so many words says, "if this is the only station you can see with your TV anymore, you're a dumbass." Followed by instructions on what to do to convert one's tv to digital ota reception.

Alright, I didn't see it coming with Big Al's post, but this knife/gun topic and now church/state topic, is likely to devolve into a political debate.

We've done really well for the past few months keeping politics to a minimum here, with a few obvious exceptions.

I can legally own pistols, shotguns, rifles, swords, crossbows, baseball bats, bowie knives, kitchen knives, poison, etc., etc.... All more dangerous than a pocket knife that opens really fast. That law is ridiculous enough, but for customs to use these underhanded tactics to push their agenda, only making a useless law MORE ridiculous, is insanity. Millions of people will be criminals overnight.

The U.S. Customs is attempting to change the decades old definition of a switchblade. The current definition is (my words) any knife with a blade that opens by activating a button or switch on the handle of the knife. They want to change it to - Any knife that can be opened with one hand. That definition covers every one of my knives. It would also include pocket tools, box cutters, utility knives, and a few tools used on a daily basis by drywallers, carpenters, warehouse workers, mechanics, EMTs, Firemen, etc, etc... and of course regular people around the home. They are steamrolling this through by giving it only a 30 day window, and not accepting any e-mails. If anyone wants the e-mail with form letter, and links to representatives, send me an e-mail and I'll forward it. This is scary stuff, and needs to be stopped.

Kieran: The movie is subtitled in English most people pass it up because it says that on the cover. What I meant to say is you can switch the movie to Dolby 2.0 and watch it dubbed in English, in most cases it is hard to translate French movies etc.. into English because everything seems way off, lip sync issues etc.. In this case most of the main actors in the movie can speak English and what I read is they redid some shots in English.

Hello all

Today I am having a positive day. I cut the grass and wiped my snotty eyeballs.

Then I took a nice little relaxing 21 mile ride though the hills. That was fun, then as I was relaxing and reaching for my bottle a nice big fat 4', maybe 5' snake showed up next to me. I think he was lying on the road sunning and was trying to move out of my way. IT was getting hard to see. Remember my snotty eyeballs after cutting the grass. wind across hay fields does not help.

I made it back to my house and then did a little run to the corner and back. OK workout done for the day. In the house and a C-milk and Zyrtec

Yeppie, shower time and then I can start working on the new blinds in my daughters room.

The big choice for the day is what to drink with Grilled Chicken this evening.

CajunMike: Noting wrong with that, the Pre looks like a great device. The first Gen iPhone I had was great zero issues with it.. The 3G is a different story, but I just read AT&T 3G network in certain places is garbage, so this is most likely the carriers fault and not my phone. Ironically I turned off my 3G service, which seems better on data than actual phone service and sure enough now my phone sounds a ton better. The good thing about Apple is I returned it and they replaced it quickly but sure enough after I did this I found about the 3G service is crap in my area. I was looking at switching to the Pre, but Sprint is worse in my area than AT&T.
CajunMike ( 68.226.210.53 ) at 10:48 AM EST Thursday, June 4, 2009

Gar: Well, call me a sucker, we will see. I went ahead and jumped on the Palm Pre. I get it for free as my contract was up two months ago and they want to get me off month-to-month. I just had to re up for two years.

What put me over the top are the great reviews with only mild reservations plus the fact that I'm on my third Blackberry 8830 in a year and this one started acting up last week. That track ball is a piece-o-schit!

Engadget's Pre review posted yesterday http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/03/palm-pre-review/

Precentral.net's more than thorough run through with the phone.

http://www.precentral.net/palm-pre-review

I should have it early next week. Also, Verizon and AT&T won't be waiting long as they are reportedly getting it early next year. Sprint didn't get too long of an exclusive.

CajunMike: I really like the CTS-V. A customer who owns dealerships has a whole new batch of cars at his house everytime I've gone over there. It's so much fun just walking through the garage. He had a CTS-V the time before last and I was in the drive way when he was leaving in it. That thing sounds baddddd arse for a 4 door sedan. He always has cool cars there, at least 8 of them. (viper, RR phantom, hot rods, bmw z8, etc)

I'm not immediately sold on the looks, but then I hated the new BMW 5 bodystyle when it first came out, and now I kinda like it.

Chris L.: Oh, I don't know about that... I'd say the "duel of the fates" sequence in Phantom Menace was as good. This trailer is pretty darn amazing though, for a game trailer.

I wonder what the timeline is supposed to be? Immediately after the end of ep.3? (I'm guessing the main sith there is Vader.) Thing is, ep.3 made it seem like 99.99% of Jedi were dead by the end of the movie.

Joe: We have a bunch of new camaro's and mustangs around here and I think the Dodge Challenger beats them all when it comes to being a looker. Although I'm sure you're mainly talking about sales, and in that case the Mustang is the clear winner. However, if I were hitting a midlife crisis, the Challenger SRT would be on my very short list while the other two wouldnt. ;)

The management for most of the companies now just micromanage you the crap out of you, so burnout rate is really high. The Start Up company I work for is already firing people after 6 months, and 3 of those months was spent in training.

Joe: Hummer: good riddance, IMO. I never liked anything but the H1.

I find it ironic that a company based on a vehicle which is an American military icon, is going to a communist country corporation.

Camero: Really? I think the new Camero is sweet. I loved the new retro Mustang when it came out, but when the new Camero was announced, I liked it more. Doesn't matter, I can't/won't buy those kind of cars anyway (impractical). Nice to look at though.

GM

Tony C: Fine, they can keep Buick, but then they should discontinue all models under the Chevy label that are essentially the SAME FRIGGIN' CAR!

I never understood the competition between the Firebird and the Camero. Same car!!! At least Pontiac is gone. Not that I wanted to see Pontiac gone per se, but I'm glad to see some redundant models eliminated.

TRIM THE FAT.

Of course Chrysler and Ford are guilty of the same thing. Drives me nuts.

BIG AL: You know, you really have to wonder what GM was thinking when they acquired Saab. I think they're OK cars, having owned two of them in the early '80's, but they have never caught on in this country. I think they lost money on each one they sold and, consequently, had to try to make it up on volume. Not a good business model.

Joe: Congrats, Joe! Great news. Your plant is part of GMC Trucks, right?

I can't BELIEVE they decided to keep Buick, a brand whose entire lineup (or almost all of it) is redundant with other GM (Chevy) products. IMO, GM could be simplified to GMC Trucks, Chevy, and Saturn, and redundant models should be axed (e.g. why have a GMC Suburban and a Chevy Suburban???)

T-Man: The disk will be fine so long as you are i) not calibrating colour and/or ii) not too anal about calibrating colour because SD uses REC 601 as its defined colour points where as HD used REC 709 as its defined colour points and they are different...and, just inc ase you are thinking that ALL Blu-ray/flat panels PROPERLY conver the SD colour space to the HD colour space rest assured that they do NOT...

To summarize -- brightness, contrast, gamma and greyscale are not an issue BUT colour is an issue...HTH

One of the Hafler amps I brought home from the office is blown. I knew it would be. When I unhooked it, it was on. I could have been months that it was left on. So I knew it was iffy.

Joe: I am convinced that had GM filed for bankruptcy many months ago, they would be in in far better shape today. They would have been able to break the unions and get out from under all of the legacy costs. They could have forced labor employees to accept the market value for their jobs and thus become more competitive. They wouldn't be beholden to the U.S. Government and these foolish appointed czars. Now, they are finished because politicians with no business acumen (NONE) have interjected themselves to pay off the UAW who got them elected.

Meanwhile Ford is smelling like a rose right now and their stock is inching up at a steady pace. With people hording their dollars and refusing to buy cars and homes, you're going to have an extremely hard time convincing them to buy a GM or Chrysler product.
CajunMike ( 68.226.210.53 ) at 12:57 PM EST Friday, May 29, 2009

Hate to say I told you so, but I seem to recall saying that the tens of billions upon tens of billions sent to Detroit was a complete loser. But it's all good, the UAW is now rich and two car companies are dead. Meanwhile, "Taxpayers are on the hook for an extra $55,000 a household to cover rising federal commitments made just in the past year for retirement benefits, the national debt and other government promises, a USA TODAY analysis shows."

I need to be able to type on a QWERTY keyboard at a pretty fast rate with my business. My contract with sprint ran out last month so I'm free and clear. They offered me a great deal on the Pre with a two year contract but I'm going to wait. I like everything I see about the Pre except my concerns over the keyboard. The Blackberry QWERTY keyboard is the best and I'm not taking a step down in that department. Plus I want to wait and see if these first generation phones are buggy. The new Palm OS is supposed to be ground breaking. We will see. By the way, the guys on precentral have been dismissing that site you linked too. They say it's run by a bunch of iphone fan boys. This movie is by no means a HT demo piece, but if you are looking for some AMAZING acting, SEE THIS MOVIE.

I'd give the story a B grade or so, but the acting... best I've seen in a long time. I was riveted.

Noodle lady Fat old lady that bounces up and down with a pool noodle in between her legs

Drilled her I came up on her and swam over the top of her. My first arm came down on her legs and the next pne pulled me over the top of her. The third one she had my feet in her face.

Usally I am really nice...but she told the other guy she woudl smack him and she grabbed my ass during my workout.

Joe:So yesterday I am 1500 yards into my swim and I was sharing a lane with this women. Now I usally swim wiht the same people more or less, she was new. Before I get to the point to start out she tells another guy to stay on his side or she would smack him as she swam. He moved over, it did not bother me at all. Then she made so comment to me as I was going under, I did not hear. So I turned and was coming back and I seen an extra pair of legs in the lane.
I figured it was a nodle lady that wonder under the floats.
So this women grabs my right arm in air as I was reaching for my next stroke. No biggie, I pulled her ass off balance and continued though. Then she grabs my wasit as I am going by. She wanted to let me know that there is a third in the lane and we are going to circle swim now.I tread and think about yelling but skipped it. A few laps later she was in my way....remember how she told the guy she would smack him if he got in her way.....so I drilled her and kept right on going.I stopped at 2000 and a girl Triathlete in the lane next to me gave a big smile and a nood. The women was real nice the rest of the day.Not nice to grab someone because a person joins in

He actually liked it, and said it was much better than 3 and worth the price of admission. The only thing he didn't like which didn't bother me as much is Bale did his "Batman" voice for this movie as well and he found that a tad irritating. Otherwise the rest of the cast was very good the effects were excellent and the sound was some of the best effects I have heard in a movie.

Tony C: That's a great thing you did taking that friend in. I have a friend who is very similar and while I get irritated with him I have to check myself and step back and try not be so judgmental.

The difference between your friend and mine is that he's an only child, 50 years old, never married and we are pretty sure he's still a virgin. His parents divorced about 20 years ago and his mom needs to be in a nursing home but he wont put her there. His dad died last month and he's really struggling. However his dad left him financially well off which is good because he's never really worked a day in his life. His dad owned an office supply business and Mike would show up there around 11, then go to lunch for a few hours and then work another two or three hours in the late afternoon.

Absolutely no ambition, he marvels at all of his friends who are building their lives while he's been standing in the same spot since high school.

All that said, he's the sweetest guy in the world and everyone in town knows him. Extremely likable and everyone has a goofy story to tell about him. He bakes homemade banana nut bread in individual aluminum foil tins and delivers them to everyone at Christmas time. Man that's some good banana nut bread... he wont share the recipe either. :(

Hope everyone had a good Memorial Day.. I spent mine in the ER, when for a MTB ride on a local trial and said to the lady I was coming up on rider on your left, what does she do steps to her left and turns around.. WTF... I turned out of her way to avoid taking her out and I do a header over my bike and land on the left side of my helmet and my left side... I go into Urgent care doc, does X-Rays and comes back to give me good news, nothing broken but once I tell him I am having a hard time swallowing he calls for a Ambulance and before I know it I have 3 nurses putting a neck brace on me and 2 firemen showing up to wisk me of the the ER.. They thought my neck could be broken..

On a lighter note, I did see the new Terminator this evening and it is actually pretty darn good, not as good as Star Trek, but very entertaining. The Critics are "Way" too hard on this, much better than 3 and worth the price of admission

Gar: CC made the most money off the sale of their domain than any other asset they had. The new owners hope to make a good go of it by not giving up all that market share to Best Buy.
The other Brick & mortar retailer hoping to take more of the electronic market share is Wal-Mart. They are remodeling their electronics/entertainment departments and are talking to manufactorers about new deals. I found it interesting that Panasonic, who is trying to rebrand themselves, publicly stated they will not partner with retailers who will use the brand to low-ball.
Tony C ( 67.176.199.68 ) at 11:56 PM EST Sunday, May 24, 2009

I don't know if any of you have friends like this, but I bet you do.
I have a friend since high school. A very smart guy. Always got straight As. Nothing but potential ahead of him.

Except that he has a real problem with authority. He hate's being smarter than the boss. A few decades later and a few hard luck stories, no luck with relationships due to drinking, three DUIs, etc., we find my friend working at Home Depot as just a job so he had ride his Harly when he can.
This guy also cares for his elder father, who lives in a retirement community, with unwavering dedication. His sisters live out of state.

Yesterday, we get a call from one of his sisters who I haven't spoken to since their mother passed away six years ago.
My friend dumped his bike downstate (Kankakee) last Tuesday. He has a compound fracture in his left leg and has alrady had two operations.
The thing is, he can't be alone and has no one to take care of him.
So, we're taking him in for a...few weeks.
I guess, we'll also have to check in on his dad too.

This is not a big deal. He's like a brother to me. My three grown son's still call him "uncle".

I suppose, I'm telling you this, just because I feel for sorry for this guy. Talk about a black cloud hanging over you. I'm really concerned how this will affect his already fragile mental state and almost self-destructive personality.

All one can do is, hope for the best.
Tony C ( 67.176.199.68 ) at 11:44 PM EST Sunday, May 24, 2009

Joelc: I have to say that I really have not been able to put it through it's paces yet. I just hooked them all up today and tonight we watched The Reader. Not exactly a movie to rock the house.
I did a quick reconfiguration of the speakers and tweaked the EQ a little. But I plan to really set it up tomorrow.

I have to say that I wasn't really happy with how the system sounded. It was just ok. I ordered some acoustic treatments that I hope will help. The decision to hook up the amps were two fold.
1) I read an article on the Sony receivers which gave them good marks except for the power supply.
2) I just took home to huge Adcom amps from the office.

so why not. I don't know how much time I'll spend on it tomorrow. It should be a beautiful day, and I'll probably spend most of it outdoors.

USPS mail jurisdiction?

If someone's US mail is tampered with or stolen from their mailbox, what law enforcement agency should you call? USPS is a federal entity, and I seem to remember that tampering with anyone's mail is a federal offense. So, do you call the FBI? Or just your local police? This happened to a friend, not me.

Star Trek...

Joelc: Totally agree with you and I watched Hero's the show he came from as a villain. I think he does a great job, and it the first couple of episodes on TV "Spock" was a hard ass.

As far as my experience with Amps, external Amps always seem to better headroom and just sound better than most receivers, but I think that gap is closing. I am using a Pioneer Elite Receiver and I must say that this unit has a great Amp section, but they are using the new ICE amp technology. I would think a external Amp by Adcom and or Sim Audio would sound much better than a Amp section in a Sony receiver. I know your question was directed at Tony, but I have found external Amps always to be better, but I am finding that is changing because more companies are using better Amp sections in there higher end receivers.

They are remake happy and they cancel good shows on TV can't seem to come up with any new novel idea! Terminator got axed for next year but then again the movie might crash and burn as well but the show was getting good, they should have had it right with "Fringe" and I bet it would still be around. What a disappointment. Those writers ought to be tarred and feathered. I've been begging for this series to end since about episode 15 or so this season. Boo-Hiss. Don't know if I'll bother with next season.

Ouch... early reviews for "Terminator Salvation" are horrible. Looks like a real stinker. http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/terminator_salvation/

Looks like the next trip to the theater for me won't be until July 3rd for "Public Enemies" and then July 10 for "Bruno". ;)

I'll wait for "Up" and "Transformers 2" on Blu-ray.

Gar ( 69.128.158.81 ) at 1:46 PM EST Monday, May 18, 2009

CajunMike: I agree, also I was never a Trekie, I did watch all of the series, but never went off the "Ranch" if you know what I mean! ;) I watched the original series, TNG/DS9/Voyager and even Enterprise which started getting good till they canceled it. This movie is by far the best I have seen as well, although some of the movies with Picard were good with the Borg.
CajunMike ( 68.226.210.53 ) at 11:01 PM EST Sunday, May 17, 2009

Gar: I couldnt not fine fault with any of the performances. These young guys are in a no-win situation. Every one of the original characters are iconic.

Can you imagine in a decade or two, Lucas is deceased and they propose rebooting the original Star Wars trilogy? Some new guys playing Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and then some new voice for Darth Vader? It's a no win situation with a certain age group.

I was never a Trekie as I only saw it in syndication in the 70s and I was too young to digest the storylines. I never watched an episode of any of the TV incarnations afterwards either. I saw all of the Star Trek movies and other than the wrath of Kahn they were average at best.

Of all of the Star Trek productions, this new reboot is the best. IMO
Gar ( 69.128.158.81 ) at 7:34 PM EST Sunday, May 17, 2009

Kieran: Let me rephrase that... ;) Zachary Quinto did a very good job as Spock, some critics were petty hard on his performance. Most people I talked to (Even die hard Trekies) thought he did a great job.
Gar ( 69.128.158.81 ) at 12:12 PM EST Sunday, May 17, 2009

CajunMike: That is good to know that Abrams will be at the helm for the next couple. He sure is busy with Lost, but that is ending next season and he is also doing "Fringe" which has been a great show so far, so the guy sure has been busy.

Kieran: some critics were ripping on his performance (Zachary Quinto) from Heros, but I thought he did a great job as the original spock(Nimoy). Spock was a ass on the first couple of shows of the very first TV series. That is good to hear that there are more to come as there is plenty of story line to go around still.
Kieran ( 76.168.201.225 ) at 1:22 AM EST Sunday, May 17, 2009
Star Trek

Cajun, Gar: FYI, the guy who played Spock was interviewed and quoted as saying the main cast of characters are all contracted for at least 2 sequels, IIRC.
CajunMike ( 68.226.210.53 ) at 12:20 AM EST Sunday, May 17, 2009

Gar: The first one had to introduce you to the characters, set the look and reintroduce the whole franchise over again. Abram hit a homerun in all of those aspects. How often is the second movie of a franchise better? Empire Strikes Back, Godfather II, Dark Knight, Spiderman 2, Star Trek Wrath of Kahn, Bourne Supremacy (marginal and debatable), XMen2....all better than the first. The flip side is that you can name many sequel failures but many times you know when it's going to happen before you see it. Different director, different writers and you know it was thrown together just to make money. Abrams is on for the long haul and I think this reboot has a long run coming.
Gar ( 69.128.158.81 ) at 11:39 PM EST Saturday, May 16, 2009

CajunMike: I am a semi Trekie, and really enjoyed it. Rumor has it that the next one will star Tom Cruise as Khan.... LOL Abrams has been busy with "Lost" and pretty decent show called "Fringe" which I really like. I hope he stays on course with Star Trek and produces more of the same or at least similar films. The action was good, the acting was good and the effects were excellent! Now wrap that up in a great story and we will even have better movie. Wishful thinking, but he seems to have the recipe right, or at least most of it.
CajunMike ( 68.226.210.53 ) at 8:32 PM EST Saturday, May 16, 2009

By the way, I haven't been to the theater in awhile but I must have missed the price increase.... and I'm sure Louisiana is less expensive than major cities across the U.S. I paid $6.50 for a matinee ticket, they show 8.50 for showings after 5pm. My bill for popcorn, diet coke and raisinettes was another 12 bucks. I saw that they charge another three bucks for 3D movies. I can see why it's making sense to a lot of people to simply wait four-to-six months for the movie to come out on disc and you can own the movie for just about the same price.

Just got finished watching it on Blu-ray and it was awesome. You have a choice either the theatrical version of an unrated version. I can see why there is talk of a sequel. Highly underrated movie. Jason Bourne meets Ransom with Liam Neeson kicking major ass.

Star Trek

Kieran: I would give it a 8 as well. The guy that played Spock they said was bad, but I thought he did a excellent job. Bones of course didn't have too many lines but when he did they lacked substance. I did like it better than Transformers, and I am too looking forward to the new Terminator, the new TV series is good as well. Also I would recommend "Fringe" as far as new TV series go. I also got to see some of the filming of "Public Enemy" and since a lot of it was filmed in Columbus Wisconsin I am excited to see this film as well.

Puppetmaster: I'm not too excited about Transformers2.
I am excited about Terminator4 though.
Public Enemies is coming out in July, Johnny Depp as John Dillinger, can't be too bad...
"UP" just did very well at Cannes, so I'm looking forward to that, although it'll probably wait for rental for me.
"G.I. Joe" comes out in August. I'm interested... probably a rental though. The preview looked kinda cheesy, and not very true to the old comic books, tv-cartoon series, and toys of my youth.

Star Trek

Saw this Wednesday. I give it a 7 or 8 out of 10. IMO, this is ranked #3 of all ST movies, behind ST2 and ST6.

It was VERY entertaining, but the story/plot lacked the some of the substance of other sci-fi greats. It was fun, and there was plenty of references to old ST lore for anyone who's a fan of the franchise. The action was great, the effects (visual and audio) were great.

Where it falls short, again, is the story/plot. It wasn't terrible, it worked quite well, actually. But I just can't say it was excellent. I don't think it could stand on its own as a great sci-fi flick, if it weren't for all the references to and characters from the classic ST lore. Ironically, this is often where it's hailed by critics. Many have said that it's a great entry into the ST franchise for new/young fans. I'm sorry, but if I didn't already know all the characters, I don't know that I'd care about them much in this film.

But still, it was great as a summer blockbuster. I highly recommend it, especially if you're even a mild ST fan, and I recommend seeing it on the big screen if you can.

Another question for the computer savvy

GEO: In addition to all that's been said, extra memory means you can have more applications open at once before Windows needs to make extensive use its virtual memory (i.e. caching to the hdd.)

FYI, the 4GB limitation is a hard fact due to the 32-bit nature of the O/S. A 32-bit OS can only use a max of 32 bits to refer to any byte of memory. So, 2^32 = 4.2 billion, or 4GB.

Also, if you have any add-on cards (e.g. graphics card) the memory there takes away from the 4GB maximum.

I have 2GB and it's fine for me. I also have a 512MB graphics card, for a total addressable physical memory size of 2.5GB.

You definitely want a bigger hdd though.
GEO ( 209.180.126.10 ) at 2:49 PM EST Tuesday, May 5, 2009
Another question for the computer savvy

Gar: Thanks, Gar. No need to pay for the memory if it won't improve performance.
Gar ( 96.61.43.56 ) at 10:17 AM EST Tuesday, May 5, 2009
Another question for the computer savvy

GEO.:From my understanding of Windows, and I am no expert but:

There is no way to use more than 3GB of RAM on a general purpose PC with Windows 32-bit edition. The solution to use 4GB is to switch to 64-bit Windows version is the recommended solution by Microsoft. The problem with this is most drivers and applications don't have 64-bit versions yet. So unless your doing any kind of very extensive gaming, I would just stick to 2gig of memory for now, although there shouldn't be an issue with upgrading to a faster bigger hardrive which can also help. I am currently using 8gigs but I am not using Microsoft for OS and I am doing a ton of HD video. So he answered the memory question, but didn't address the hard drive which is a very easy upgrade for most IT guys.
GEO. ( 68.0.162.243 ) at 9:50 AM EST Tuesday, May 5, 2009
Another question for the computer savvy

Last week I posted a question about professional versus consumer grade laptops. Kieran posted a response (thanks). The computers our IT department is supplying are Dell Latitude with 2GB of RAM and 80GB harddrives. I told our IT director that I wanted to upgrade to 3GB of RAM and a 250GB harddrive. Here's the response from IT: "Just so you know, Windows XP Pro won't address more than 4GB of memory but the thing to remember here is that having the additional gigabyte won't buy you any more performance because the system and most Windows applications won't use anything above 2GB." I have no idea what that means. Is it a waste of money to upgrade to 3GB of RAM? What questions should I be asking?

I saw Seven Pounds which I thought was very different, but was able to figure it out half way through. It was ok.
Tonight I watched Rock N Rolla, a Guy Richie film.
Worth a rental, but similar to Lock Stock, Snatch, and other English films of that ilk.
Tony C ( 67.176.199.68 ) at 12:03 AM EST Monday, May 4, 2009

Joelc: Got it, thanks.
Gar ( 96.61.43.56 ) at 8:56 PM EST Sunday, May 3, 2009

CajunMike: Well, totally agree with on on MILK... I rented it and they try to push the whole I am gay and everything is grand thing. Even a friend who is gay said it was way over the top, the story was good, but I turned it over within the first 10 minutes. I thought Slumdog was good, but haven't seen the reader yet. I just saw "Nothing but the Truth" and that was very good as well.
Joelc ( 70.54.140.150 ) at 3:26 PM EST Sunday, May 3, 2009

CajunMike: Funny you should say that because that is exactoly what i thought about The Reader...to each their own...with that, at least we can agree on equipment... ;)
CajunMike ( 68.226.210.53 ) at 2:51 PM EST Sunday, May 3, 2009

Joelc: Yes, was just giving my opinion. I enjoyed the story telling of the Reader much more. I kept forcing myself to keep watching Slumdog. At least three or four times during the first 45 minutes I considered turning it off. I stuck around and it paid off in the second half.
Joelc ( 70.52.170.30 ) at 6:51 AM EST Sunday, May 3, 2009

CajunMike: I have to disagree with you on this in that to me SLumDog was much better than The REader....but ymmv...
Joelc ( 70.52.170.30 ) at 6:50 AM EST Sunday, May 3, 2009

Tony C: No, the term LPCM refers to tramsmitting the digital audio stream (i.e.DD-THD, dts-MA, etc.)digitally as a lossless signal; in essence the DD-THD / dts-MA is decoded from its bitstream format to its lossless PCM format and then transmitted by the Blu-rau player to the pre/pro digitally (i.e. over HDMI) but since the audio stream is already decoded the pre/pro has no decoding to do...one advantage of this approach is that the pre/pro's horsepower that was being used to decode the bitstream can now be used for other goodies such as room correction, upsampling, etc...hope this helps...
Joelc ( 70.52.170.30 ) at 6:37 AM EST Sunday, May 3, 2009

Good morning gang...
CajunMike ( 68.226.210.53 ) at 1:36 AM EST Sunday, May 3, 2009

2009 nominees for movie of the year.. Oscars.

I will see Benjamin Button next week when it arrives via Netflix. I have seen all of the others, Slumdog last week, Frost/Nixon and tonight The Reader. I refuse to partake in any further movies that Sean Penn is an actor but that's a political discussion. I will take most folks word that "Milk" was good, but was really given much more hype due to Hollywood's gay agenda.

of what I have seen, "The Reader" should have won Best Picture. The wife and I just got finished watching it and we then watched all of the extra features on the Blu-ray disc. Slumdog was very good, but not in the same realm as The Reader.
Tony C: ( 67.176.199.68 ) at 11:38 PM EST Saturday, May 2, 2009

speaking of work, looks like we will be moving into the same offices as Sony Electronics and Sony Pictures by July. I hope to make some good contacts. This would have been awesome about 10 years ago when carrying CDs was like carrying currency.
Tony C: ( 67.176.199.68 ) at 11:35 PM EST Saturday, May 2, 2009

GEO.: I don't know if they will ever come with an update for the 350 that will allow it to decode on-board. why should they? The 550 sells for more for that added feature.

Joel: When you use the the LPCM, are you refering to the use of an analog stream to the receiver via multi channel analog input?

Joe: I too am very happy for you. It's a horrible thing to have to watch your industry dissolve in front of your eyes. I wish all the luck in the world.

Gar: Sure hope you do get down again with time. I understand how it goes. I just spent a week in LA where I have a lot of friends. Unfortunately only enough time to see one.

AlL: Thanks for the cable info, I have to do some shopping.
Oh, I will also be buying some room acoustic panels this week. I finally found a cheap place to purchase from. Granted, others were way cooler looking but this should work fine on a budget of $600.
Joelc ( 70.52.170.30 ) at 10:13 PM EST Saturday, May 2, 2009

Joe: I am very very happy for you...

Geo: I just purcahed a Panasonic DMP-BD60 Blu-Ray player for circa USD 250 and it is, according to Stacey Spears, the best player currently available (although the Oppo BD-83 will top it) and it decodes DD-TH and dts-MA...I have watched a few movies on it and other than load times -- which I am told are relavtively fast for blu-ray -- I have no complaints and would highly recommend it...the sound quality is terrific through my Meridian system...
Chris L. ( 71.181.32.77 ) at 6:43 PM EST Saturday, May 2, 2009

Gar:Everyone is waiting for the next update, which was promised a month or so ago. It will give the player the abilty to decode DTS HD-MA and DD TrueHD for those who don't have a receiver that's capable of that.

According to Chris Walker from Pioneer..
"I am scheduled to receive a testing version the end of next week...

If this firmware makes it through the QA department then we are good to go..

I will let everyone know the results once I receive it..

Thanks,

Chris

I guess I need six more speakers

CajunMike: Yikes!! Six more... I would be happy with another 2. Still using a 5.1 system and when I finally have the $$ to redo the HT room the right way I will spend it on the room and then upgrade. 6 more speakers just means more cash for most and unless you have the room, just don't see a need for it yet. Thanks for the article and good read..
GEO. ( 68.0.162.243 ) at 2:39 PM EST Saturday, May 2, 2009

Joelc: I agree that the audio improvement of lossless over lossy is substantial. But the 350 does not internally decode DTS-MA, nor does my Onkyo. The Onkyo will, however, accept LPCM, so I either need a BD player that will decode it internally, or wait for such a firmware upgrade to the 350.
GEO. ( 68.0.162.243 ) at 2:36 PM EST Saturday, May 2, 2009

Gar: That's the update that I just did this past week.

I guess I need six more speakers

May 1, 2009 — Audyssey Laboratories, the developer of MultEQ auto-equalization and other technologies now available in a wide range of A/V receivers and pre/pros, has long been a proponent of increasing the number of channels in an audio system. With its newly announced DSX technology, it has now brought that capability to home theaters...

Joelc: Love Meridian gear, it's been a long time since I had a couple of pieces of gear in my rack from them. But I agree LPCM is the ticket, maybe for some of us it is a piece of mind seeing it displayed on the front panel of our Receivers and or Processors... LOL ;)

Also: Anyone see any updates for the Pioneer 51 yet? I did the last update a few weeks ago, this is always a good page to check out:

Joelc ( 70.52.170.30 ) at 11:20 AM EST Saturday, May 2, 2009

Geo, Ger, etc.} I have just recently enetred into the world of lossless audio (i.e. DD-THD and dts-MA) and, as a result of Meridian's atchitecture, must have it decoded in the Blu-Ray player to LPCM and then passed on the Meridian for processing; that said, the SQ improvement for DVD to Blu-Ray was, to me, much larger than the PQ improvement...the point of all this is that there is (i.e. should be no difference) between decoding in the Blu-Ray player versus decoding in the processor so as long as i) you Blu-Ray player can decode into LPCM and ii) your receiver accpets LPCM then you are good to go...really very simple...
GEO. ( 68.0.162.243 ) at 10:55 AM EST Saturday, May 2, 2009

Gar: I've wondered in the back of my mind (the front is full) whether there would be, say, a firmware upgrade to the 350 to internally decode DTS-MA. I downloaded and installed the latest firmware upgrade, but it pertained to BD Live which I don't see myself using.
Gar ( 96.61.43.56 ) at 9:39 AM EST Saturday, May 2, 2009

Geo: I heard there will be updates to the S-350 as I have the exact same setup you have in my upstairs system. Regardless it is a great sounding combo!

HDMI cables

Tony C: Yes, Bluejeans cables. Excellent quality, price and service. Glad you got that resolved. Now I'm wondering whether I HAVE to have DTS-MA. I've got the Sony 350 and Onkyo 705. I believe that if I had a BD player that decoded DTS-MA internally, I could send it to the Onkyo via multichannel and the Onkyo would output it. Might have to think about it.

Joelc: There's very little doubt that it will kick A$$ on most video tasks, especially Blu-Ray. Most of the gripes with the current firmware appear to be around some of the "universal player" aspects of the bdp83... like play back of SACD's, HDCD's, etc. Granted over 80% of previewers voted "YES" to release the player now... so the gripes are few.

AVReview pits four high-end receivers againsteachother

Tony C:: There wasn't an electronics piece in my possession for the entire 80s and part of the 90's that didnt have a "Sony" logo on it. My first hometheater system (three systems back) had the STR-DA777ES which was considered the best HT receiver Sony had made. Several here, including Gar had the Pre/pro version of that receiver.

As I look at Sony now, there isn't a product category that they are the leader other than the PS3. The last product leader other than a video game console that Sony had was their SXRD RPTV, which Gar has and their SXRD front projector. But as there have been several generations that one is considered a clear second best to the JVC.

There are some very nice Vaio computers that I would consider buying... most notably because they come with Blu-Ray drives.

When it comes to the current receivers or pre/pro's out there. I start with Integra/Onkyo (yes, I own an Integra) and then Pioneer Elite, Denon, Marantz. I've never been a fan of Yamaha. In the early stages of 5.1 Onkyo had some great pieces and then they got blown away and were swimming in Denon's wake like everyone else. In the past three years they have become the segment leader in most of the receiver categories. You read many forums and whenever there is someone asking for an entry level receiver, the Onkyo is always tops. Mid level receivers... Onkyo... High end.. Onkyo/Integra.. but there are several layers of high end. Denon and Marantz have pieces that are close to 8000 bucks the last time I checked.

Anyways, this is my next purchase. ;) http://www.hometheatermag.com/frontprojectors/jvc_dla-hd750_d-ila_projector/

Let me know if you are familiar with any of this and what might be a good price. Evidently it's a system he bought to use as a demo system. My guess is that he's had it for awhile.

ST2S AM/FM Sirius Tuner BGK1 IPod dock

AVReview pits four high-end receivers against eachother

CajunMike: Home Theater just reviewed the Sony 5400ES and gave it high marks but didn't give it a "Top Pick" ratiing because of the amps.
I confirmed this with a friend who is a Sony dealer. That's why I would use it as a pre-pro. Sony went with value in features, not in power.

I always favored Yamaha, but I don't like the difficulty in switching around all those DSPs and there were other quirks that bugged me.
BC ( 76.199.124.128 ) at 11:15 AM EST Tuesday, April 28, 2009

CajunMike: Sonos is cool but is a little different type of install from the traditional whole house audio system.

Ask yourself a couple questions.

1. What sources (and how many) do you want to use?

2. How many zones will you have?

3. Do you want keypads or would you prefer a remote solution for control?

I've used the Nuvo Grand Concerto for most of my installs. Russound has some cool stuff as well and so does Niles (zr6 and ICS). The Nuvo is pretty awesome for the price. But you are limited in keypad choices whereas with Russound or Niles, you have some more options. (such as a simple push button type up to a touchscreen)

In my own house, I just use a marantz zs-5300 which is a 3 zone, 3 source amp. I have no keypads and use universal remotes since I already have 1 in every room. I also have an ipod touch that I can use with itunes. With that, you get 2 way feedback of what is playing, the ability to choose what you want to play in itunes and volume control. We aren't power users, so this setup works well for us.

CajunMike: Although yoour post was directed at BC I hope you do not nmind me chimming in...the best, and by far the best, value of anything that I have purchased is my SONOS whole house audio system...plays ripped music, local radio, internet radio, rhapsody, xm radio, etc....totally bullet proof...
CajunMike ( 68.226.210.53 ) at 9:31 PM EST Monday, April 27, 2009

BC: Any thoughts on whole house audio systems, etc.? I have been getting all the mags over the years but I've never read any of the reviews or info on that stuff as it's never been of interest. My Triad dealer is a guy I trust and he has all the certifications. He's looking at my house plans now in order to give me a bid on pre-wiring. This is what he sent me in an email.

Being a two story house it's best to pre-wire for any possible future needs.
In some cases, it's the only time you can. I consider whole house audio. I use mine all the time. Being able to chose what source you want listen to without leaving the room or pool area was the the key to me using it and enjoying it. Especially in my back yard. And it not just about music. Add a satellite radio receiver and you've got a limitless amount of news, sports, music ect. I have a demo Russound system I might be willing to sell at a price that would make this a good investment. And it does increase the value of the home because it's part of the house. And you don't need to put it every room. I have a add on Russound product that becomes your door bell system. It is a internal/external intercom system that mutes the music and rings the doorbell through the speakers. The door stations take the place of your standard doorbells allowing you to tell the person at the front door to come around, we're back by the pool. If there's no music playing, the doorbell still rings through all the speakers in the distributed audio system. I wouldn't live without mine and they can be costly to wire in an existing home. Didn't mean to go on and on, but I use to think I didn't need more than a couple of speakers hooked up to the zone 2 side of my recover. Since I have lived with one I will always have one. We can talk more about this later.

I will spend sometime with your plans and give you some suggestions. Do you want me to run RG6 coax for cable or satellite? I use Belden cable that has good noise rejection and true HD bandwidth. With contactors running coax you don't always know what your getting. I can wire for indoor and outdoor audio, whole house audio control, computer networking, your theater's needs, any runs from displays to their source equipment location. You'll want the electrical contractor to drop AC receptacles behind any wall mounted flat screens and in areas that support equipment will be located.
Remind me where you wanted to place the theater's components and let me know the location of any other TV's and their source equipment. Send me that information and I'll get with you to discuss details.

GEO: I agree with you wholeheartedly, and there's no way in hell I'd buy a computer with a paltry 80GB hdd in this day and age of huge digital music and video files, especially when hdd's are so cheap, and there's no such thing as a pro-grade hdd, that I've ever seen. Pro-grade may just mean Dell, or someone, checks it first, and verifies some level of performance integrity, so they then are "comfortable" with giving a better warranty. Tell your IT guys to just pay for a better warranty on a consumer grade laptop. I bet a consumer grade laptop with a comprehensive 5-year warranty upgrade is still cheaper than what they are quoting you.

I'm friends with the IT guy for our department, and his personal policy (not for work) is to buy a laptop with the fastest cpu and graphics he can get, then downgrade the memory and hdd to the lowest/smallest size, because he buys big memory and hdd's after market for much less. Even after eating the cost of the small memory and hdd (which he tries to re-coup on ebay) he still comes out ahead. I haven't been in the market for a laptop for some time, but next time I am, this is what I'll look into doing. Upgrading the hdd and memory for a laptop is EASY.

AVReview pits four high-end receivers against eachother

I need to pick some computer savvy brains here. I'm starting the process to get a new work laptop. We are required to go through our IT department and buy the computer from whoever they have their contract with. Right now it's with Dell for the Latitude. The price they quoted me is $1,392 for a Latitude with 2GB of RAM and an 80GB harddrive. I've questioned the cost, since, for instance, yesterday I saw an HP with 3GB of RAM and 320GB harddrive for $449. IT says the professional grade computers have better internal components; overall construction is more rugged; professional grade computers have better and longer warranties. IT expects us to get 4 years out of a laptop. I'm not particularly tough on my computer. It seems like the price difference is pretty huge. Even if the consumer grade is not as sturdy as the professional grade, I can buy three consumer grade with far more features for the price of the professional. It just seems to me that the cost far outweighs the benefit. What do you think?
BIG AL ( 208.94.78.65 ) at 11:52 AM EST Monday, April 27, 2009

Tony C; It's a common problem aparently. Pioneer, Denon, Sony, etc... receivers are all having problems. Some answers were "it's the player", but I didn't see any answers that said they got it working. Others said it was a handshake problem with HDMI. The one I stated sounded the most sensible. It's strange that with so many people having this problem, I can't find the problem stated in any reviews.

Tony C: Wrt your Sony receiver etc. there are few companies with excellent technical support (i.e. Lumagen), other are hit and miss (i.e. Meridian, even at this price point is either terrific or brutal) and most (i.e. ever try calling Crestron) brutal including not even wanting to talk to the customer...it boggles my simple mind!

Hello

I picked up my boat from storage yesterday. I stopped and filled it up on the way home $96, thats good. Then I find my master cylnder for my brakes is empty and rusted out. Ok I will have to replace that, flush lines and hope the bleeders don't snap off. Crawled under the trailer to do an inspection. One of the "U" bolts is snapped at the nut, ok I have to fix that. I also have to replace the wood that fenders the wheels.

Inside the Boat I have a couple cushion repairs to do. The battery is dead and on the charger.

Yea Haw, it's only been about 24 hours since I hitched it up.....owning a boat is so much fun.

Critical review of Kuro

This was an interesting review, because it's one of the few I've seen that is actually critical of the King of Plasmas in any way.
http://www.hdtvexpert.com/pages_c/PioneerPro111FD.html
I feel a bit vindicated, because I've been saying for a LONG time that black levels are not nearly as important as dynamic range. Actual 35mm movie prints have TERRIBLE black levels, but you don't notice it, because the dynamic range is so huge.

Tony C: that actually sounded painful to experience and it was painful to read as well. The whole decoding of HDMI and Dolby TrueHD and Master HD etc.. is still hard to explain and or understand for most of us techies, now to have a general retail person try to get it right is way too much to ask! LOL The HD speakers is pretty comical, man after hearing that I would have been shaking my head, mumbling WTF!

this is great. It really give you an understanding of what kind of people are out in retail. You know, I gotta feel that I can get a job anywhere after this.

You guys know that my sony reciever is in the shop, right?
Story 1:
I get a call from texas, it's the sony repair center. The guy (hispanic accent, sorry I had to say it) asks me if I could explain again what the problem was.
Understand that when I sent the receiver, I taped a large note to the receiver with all the details in 14 font. At least I was grateful that he was able to read my phone number from it.

So I explained, like the note said, it doesn't decode Dolby TrueHD or dtsMA. When I play a disc the display doesn't show it's decoding like the manual said it's supposed to. Nor does it show 7.1 in the display.

the guys asks me if I used HDMI.
I said, "come on, give me a break"
He said, "sorry".
He asked what dvd player I used. I was happy it was a sony so it would at least be in his wheelhouse.
Then he asked what movies I tried. I told him the ones I remembered and made up the others.

OK, he said that he has lots of Blu Ray there and would try again.
As he was hanging up, I shouted, "WAIT!"
I got him back and asked, "did you get it on the bench yet?"
He said yes.
What did you use?
He said, "a regular DVD player and a PS3".
I asked, "what movie?"
"a regular dvd"
End of story 1

Story 2
I'm in the mall today. I actually had to check out a sony style store for work. So while there, I look at the high-end room. They have the new model of my receiver ($1,800). It's hooked up to the most beautiful tv I've seen. the new 240hz bravia. It's playing Wall*E and it looks like it's 3D. I swear to God. compared to the other sets it was a look at the future. Anyway, I'm kind of in a hurry cuz I have to get back to work. I get a young man to help me.
me: do you have the dvd player hooked up to the recieve using an hdmi cable
him: yes, everything is hdmi
me: the bluray being played is DolbyTrueHD?
him: Yes, every bluray is TrueHD
me: I don't think that's right. Let's just look at the box and see. You look I don't have my glasses.
him: Yes, it's says it's truehd
me: then shouldn't the display say TrueHD? (it looked just like mine did...nothing in the display, but it did say HDMI)
him: um, these aren't HD speakers

I SWEAR TO GOD HE SAID, "THESE AREN'T HD SPEAKERS"

me: HD speakers? there's no such thing as HD speakers!
him: well, yes, but these are an older set....
me: It doesn't matter what speakers are hooked up, it should say it's decoding trueHD, shouldn't it? and show 7.1 right?
him: I didn't set up the receiver, so I dodn't know. I could be the dvd set up.
me: wouldn't you set it up for optimum performance?
him: Yeah, we'll have to check it.

I left.

So...now i'm concerned. What the hell is up with my reciever or this one or all of them?

Me: Shut up and put on your shoes.

Not a bad looking HTIB.. Looks really nice for a cheap bedroom setup. Samsung hasnt done much hometheater audio stuff in the U.S. but they've been selling in other countries for years. Retail is 500.00 and the speakers aren't ugly. No DVD or Blu-ray with it and doesnt decode all the newest formats so would need blu-ray player with all the processing.

BC; I believe a "bailout" may be required for a complete "stimulation". My "stimulus package" may not be "large" enough on it's own. As for the "tax bill", it will be "small" this year, but because of the necessity for a larger "stimulus package", or a "bailout", next year's "tax bill" may be quite "large".
My quotation fingers are tired.

Thanks guys! It was a great birthday! No gifts, worked till 7pm, in bed by 9pm. Why was it so great? NO DISASTERS this year! First time in decades. The wife is out of town for a couple days, so wine, movies, and song tonight to celebrate.

This story keeps on getting more interesting... Take them out of Afghanistan and they end up in Somalia. I think this is going to be a huge problem area in the next couple of months, frankly we should have finished the job in the first place.

Tony C:: I have had great luck with Sony and HK customer service, heck HK sent me a $1000 receiver because the 254 which was only $400 bucks didn't quite work right, so they sent me another unit which was worse than the first. I finally ended up with a much better unit.

Knee Repair

Puppetmaster: I hope you feel better! I call on Anesthesiologist, and I am in the OR and ER a lot, and going under is always different experience for many people. BSG was good, I will miss it, I won't go into the ending, but I didn't care for it. I wish they would have ended it differently, regardless it was a great show, I doubt if Caprica can even come close considering there will be very little special effects. The SciFi channel should be called the "Horror" channel now considering it is much cheaper to produce a Horror show/flick than do good SciFi.

Knee Repair

I had my left knee worked on this morning. This was my first surgery when I was put under. It was really wierd, they said Ok we just gave you second medication to make you sleepy. Then it was two hours later, freaky, not like TV.

Now I am on the couch and popping Laratabs. Tommorrow I have 10 eposides of BSG to watch. After that I don't know.

Morning Joelc/All: Just got back from a well needed vacation.. I highly recommend St. George Island, FL or Gulf Shores Alabama.

Cajun: nice sub, too bad it is 4K.. I just heard the JL audio Subs as a dealer in town is now stocking them, and they are very sweet. My Servo has served me well as it is rarely turned on because of my kids, once I redo and sound proof my HT room, I might be looking at a new sub.

I hope everyone had a good Easter!

Evening all.

I need to pick up a small radio cd player for my daughter. She is going to be 8 next week. I already got her a puppy, but she is using a old clock radio in her bedroom.

I don't allow headphones, but she has a MP3 player we use in the truck.
Suggestions?

Joelc: Should have said, only difference other than analog outs below.
Gasser ( 161.209.206.1 ) at 12:16 PM EST Friday, April 10, 2009

Joelc:It appears that the only other difference between the 60 and 80, is the 80 will do divx and the 60 will not. Same as with the 35 and 55. Here's one of the first reviews of the 80 at Big Picture, Big Sound, and they talk a lot about the differences between the 35,55, and 60. Internet connectivity, etc. Hope this helps.

BD80 review
Gasser ( 161.209.206.1 ) at 11:54 AM EST Friday, April 10, 2009

Joelc: I misunderstood your request. A lot of people have legacy receivers or pre/pros that don't do HDMI, and need internal decoding of the hi-def codecs and analog outs.

I know that the BD35 that I have does decode internally, and sends it LPCM over HDMI. That is why I have it for my system. Marantz screwed up with their new receiver/pre-pro line up, and didn't put enough processing horsepower to both decode the hi-def codecs, and apply the Audyssey room correction at the same time. If I send the signals bitstream, and decode it in the AV8003, then I can't apply the Audyssey. The Panny decodes it, and sends it LPCM, to the AV8003, and then I can apply the EQ. The Panny will also just send the bitstream over the HDMI. You choose which one you want in the setup menu.

In looking at the specs on the new BD60, it appears to do both just like the BD35. The Sony S550 will not decode and send LPCM over HDMI. The Pioneer and Pioneer Elite's will, but again, at this time they will not decode the dts MA internally. Just send it to the receiver bitstream.

Hope you can figure out my babble.
Joelc ( 76.64.15.123 ) at 9:23 AM EST Friday, April 10, 2009

Good morning gang...hope everyone has a great day, a happy easter and a happy passover...

Gasser: Appreciate the detailed response...two follow ups:

-- Will the BD60 output LPCM over HDMI as this is what I need and want (i.e. I have neither the desire nor the need for 7.1 analog output)...

-- What other differences exists between BD60 and the BD80 other than the fact that the latter does have 7.1 analog outputs...

Newer Sony likely not an option I can not and will not wait until July...

Just got done mounting a new flat screen in my office. Now I can actually see the tv (because I'm not peering out the door to the tv in the family room. Did I mention I love Costco? I returned a 42" phillips 720p plasma that died and they gave me a cash refund after 2.5 years. It was one I had picked up as a patio tv for a customer. So I bought him a new 42" panasonic 1080p to replace it and had enough left over to get me one too.
