Gar: Do you have it on constant push or at certain intervals? Asking about the return policy is a good idea.

Blackberry

T-Man: My Blackberry drains faster than my iPhone, and I have to have my iPhone on push mode for e-mails. What really drains the battery for me is if my wifi is set to constantly be on. The Blackberry model you speak of is one of the better units they make. I would go to your provider and ask them if you don't like the phone what there return policy is.

Blackberry

Curtis: For me, the two main issues are push vs pull on email, and size as I carry it in my pocket. The androids generally will not push anything but gmail and maybe one other, but not mine. The iphone can be set to push constantly but apparently drains the battery to the point where you might not make it through the day. I'm a small business owner and want to know when I get an email (ie. don't want to be checking/pulling constantly) Don't get that many, but when I do I want to see it asap. So I'm back to the BB. As an aside, my wife loves her iphone.

Arizona Law

There's a lot of misunderstanding about a certain aspect of what the court enjoined. She granted the injunction as to the mandatory aspect of local law enforcement inquiring regarding immigration status. IOW, SB1070 "required" the police to investigate immigration status if they developed reasonable suspicion to believe the person might be in the country illegally. Our police have always done that and they may continue to do so and they will. It is merely, for the time being, not required by law. So, in my county, and in most of the counties in the state, it will be business as usual. That's why some of us have been ambivalent about the law. For the vast majority of the state, law enforcement has been doing all along what the law required.

Both are IT types who can never get away from the steady stream of 24/7 email tech support issues via email... soooo what they may think is that tossing their phones into a river would bring nirvana! Happy to ask them about general use as a consumer for you.

Are you at a decision point where you are considering this phone vs. others? I can point you to opinions/ real world user reviews for Android-based and (who me?) iPhones.

Correct me if I'm wrong .....

but, if it is true that 70% of Az folks support this law, as it stood, didn't this judge just say, screw you. What you folks think/want does not matter!
Scott "popcorn" ( 99.23.89.232 ) at 12:25 AM EST Thursday, July 29, 2010

Lets see.... if you get pulled over by a cop, or many times when you pay by check or credut card, etc... you have to show id... If I went to another country, showing my drivers license as id should prompt needing to show a passport or other verification for me being there.... What makes this law any different than that? Other than opposing this law is a form of racial ANTI-profiling?
Gar ( 69.131.201.90 ) at 11:29 PM EST Wednesday, July 28, 2010

Geo. : Well every person that apposes the law, a few friends of mine. I ask them to explain why, and they can't! Why should we give a pass to a specific class and or group of people is beyond me. The best way to do this is start now, if you come here illegally you will be deported, people that have been here more than 3/6 months will get a pass, which I don't agree with but you have to start somewhere.
Geo. ( 72.201.5.10 ) at 7:59 PM EST Wednesday, July 28, 2010

Gar: It's interesting that one of the grounds on which the judge granted the injunction is that if all local law enforcement began to enforce immigration laws, the federal system could quickly become overwhelmed. That sort of recognizes the size of the problem and the number of illegals who are present in the state which, itself, emphasizes how ineffective the feds have been in enforcing the immigration laws.

Frackkkkkkkkkkkkk

Curtis: Well it works and there are no scratches on it that I can find. Which is odd, the main thing that has been going on is major Road Construction a lot of vibrating crap falling off the walls in house, a few days ago. I think it some how it fell because of that and the power chord and cables softened the blow it hit the couch first which cushioned the blow and then it rolled 8 inches on the carpeted floor. It is a tad out of alignment but nothing that can't be tweaked back to normal. The thing is if it was some one she knew they could have stolen a lot more easy stuff like stereo equipment games etc..

Geo: Sorry the Feds blocked the law, as I was hoping it would have taken affect. Total BS that our Federal government is costing us a ton of cash because they can't fix a problem. I not sure what peoples take on this is, but I have a good friend from Mexico who came here legally and he sent me this e-mail which has been going around.

I'm a legal American citizen and I must show my ID when:
1. Pulled over by the police.
2. Making purchases on my department store credit card.
3. When I show up for a doctor's appointment.
4. When filling out a credit card or loan application.
5. When applying for or renewing a driver's license or passport.
6. When applying for any kind of insurance.
7. When filling out college applications.
8. When donating blood.
9. When obtaining certain prescription drugs.
10. When making some debit purchases, especially if I'm out of state.
11. When collecting a boarding pass for airline or train travel.
etc..............

I'm sure there are more instances, but the point is that we citizens of the USA are required to prove who we are nearly every day! Why should people in this country illegally, be exempt!!!!!
Why shouldn't we guard our borders as closely as every other country in the world does?

iPod/iTunes issue: I have finished burning my CD's into iTunes but when I listen to an album such as Pink Floyd's "The Wall" through my iPod I get a break in between tracks. People in the world can bitch about us all they want, we we quit buying there attitudes change quickly.

Whether he actually needs any of that stuff or not.
Gar ( 71.13.115.30 ) at 8:55 AM EST Friday, July 23, 2010

BIG AL: Agreed, I dropped MS like a log as I got sick and tired of repairing computers with MSon them, why because there software is so full of security holes you need 3rd party software to fix them. Again, I hated Apple before right now for "ME" they are the best thing that works, I haven't had any issues with them since 04.

On a HT related note the new Marantz PrePro looks very promising. I might go back to using a pre pro again, if that is a good unit.
Geo. ( 72.201.5.10 ) at 8:25 AM EST Friday, July 23, 2010

BIG AL: So what you're telling us is that this lousy economy is all your fault. You owe it to your country to buy more stuff!
BIG AL ( 99.29.143.207 ) at 1:43 AM EST Friday, July 23, 2010

I know you're all tired of this stinking rotting horse flesh, so I'll let it go. I just can't figure out loyalty to a disloyal company that retains so much control over it's products. If Microsoft pulled off half of the things Apple does, I'd drop them in a heartbeat. But then I drive a 13 year old car, my computer is ancient, my TV doesn't have HDMI, and no blue-ray, so what do I know.
BIG AL ( 99.29.143.207 ) at 1:32 AM EST Friday, July 23, 2010

Scott; My PC is 6-7 years old, cost $800 new so definately not top end, and can run win 7 easily. XP came out in 2001 and almost all new software will run on xp/vista/7, and almost all will run regardless of hardware. It doesn't matter what he uses it for, or why he spent so much. The fact that he bought a "cream of the crop" machine only makes the situation worse. A 5-6 year old machine may be begging for an upgrade, but you shouldn't be forced into it by the company that makes the software and the hardware. Any more than I'd expect to have to buy a new car every 5 years if I want to drive on the interstate.
Gar ( 69.131.201.90 ) at 1:20 AM EST Friday, July 23, 2010

Curtis: I remember that model, as I had that Mac Pro and sold it in favor the the Intel based chips. There were so many Mac fans that were pissed off that they went from IBM to Intel, so it was a pretty easy model to unload at almost the same price I paid. I also had the Mac Mini, the same model you have great machine and it's been a long time since I bought one, but I might go that route again soon.

As Scott stated you can't support outdated hardware for ever but, they still supported the IBM chipset for some time after. Sooner or later you have to make that leap to newer technology regardless of the out come and hopefully you don't piss off too many people in the process. I remember when Nintendo did this, and you hope your not on that ledge when it happens. Nintendo just did it again with there DS system, as now the newer units won't support some of the older games, so we still stick with the DS Lite.
Curtis ( 76.88.70.75 ) at 11:32 PM EST Thursday, July 22, 2010

Scott "popcorn"& BIG AL: I did a little digging. In Al's pals case I think he did get screwed. The final product to make the Intel transition, late, was the Mac Pro in August '06. It replaced the dual G5 PPC-based machine that was an expensive workstation-class machine.

There were/ are plenty of p-o'd owners when the decision was made early to cutoff future OS development for PPC at Leopard, aka OS X ver. 10.5.x, only a couple of years into the Intel era. While apple will continue to support 10.5 for a long time, (bug & security patches etc.) the new/ good stuff is for Intel-based only 10.6.x Snow Leopard. It is VERY expensive & time consuming for any 3rd party developers to support 2 different system architectures.

I'm also in the same boat with my PPC G4 Mac Mini I bout only days before the Intel-Mini came out WAY ahead of schedule.

Scott "popcorn" ( 99.23.89.232 ) at 10:29 PM EST Thursday, July 22, 2010

BIG AL: Ok, I'm assuming he has a Mac Pro (or, that vintage would be a PowerMac)... again, is is a matter of comparing apples to apples (no pun intended, but take it if you want)... that caliber of computer would have cost a similar amount in the PC arena too. And, a computer that old that is a PC probably wouldnt run Windows 7 correctly either, even though it was the cream of the crop in its day. nevertheless, Apple did change chips, and they cant just support outdated hardware forever.... They kept up support for 2 or 3 years, which is longer than most PCs last anyway....

So, the next question is... does your friend do pro level computer work that requires the equal of a Mac Pro? if so, then he should expect to pay for upgrades over time. If not, why did he buy such a high caliber machine? A 5 to 6 year old machine is begging for an upgrade whether its a mac or a pc.

BIG AL ( 99.29.143.207 ) at 8:35 PM EST Thursday, July 22, 2010

Curtis, Scott; ok, but put yourself in his position. You have a $3000 computer that's only 5-6 years old. There's new software that you want to use, and another program you own that needs updating to do what you want. You can't use any because your OS is too old. You can't update your OS because you have the wrong chip. So his only choice, to run the programs put out by that same company, is to buy a completely new computer. If Microsoft did that, there'd be riots in the streets. There is absolutely no reason why new programs can't be somewhat backwards compatable, unless the company is so greedy they don't care about their customers. Not a good reason to be loyal. IMO

I saw a Mits last weekend that a guy bought fairly recently online (via Amazon I think) for cheap & I must say it looked great hooked up to a PS/3 playing Blu-Ray, and more than passable fed from an SD/ up-converting Oppo DVD player.

With all this Apple talk, I thought I would share this hillarious cartoon that a Best Buy employee made. Truth is, when it was discovered that a Blue Shirt made the video, they tried to fire the kid.

BIG AL: Yes we are firmly loyal lot who will go out of our way to defend the Mac when statements like 3 x the price/ zero decent software has ever been available get tossed around. Why? My theory is that people develop a strong, positive almost personal relationship with their machines over time. Sounds dumb I know but that's the gist of it.

You can't buy advertising like this. It is the integration of well-written SW from many devs along w/ the HW that makes the whole experience a comparative pleasure to use.

Scott "popcorn": Wow, maybe I should try that. "refuse". :) I got my moms HP laptop on my bench along with my sister-in-laws Dell. I just wish when you uninstall a program on them that it would actually remove "All" the files this would make for a much faster running machine. Although, I do a have a old Sony P4 computer that is still kicking. I have had one hard drive issue and one video card issue in since OSX and I have several machines, in both cased replaced in 48 hours no questioned asked, plus I like the fact I can understand the people on the other end of the phone. US and Canada is still where most of the Apple tech support is, which I am thankful for.

On another note: Any suggestions on iPad Apps? Right now three of my friends bought an iPad for their older parents and they love it. Thinking of getting one for my Mom so she doesn't have worry about her laptop going down all the time. I let her use my iPad, and she learned how to use it in less than 5 min.

BIG AL:Gar; Don't get me started on those crappy iPhones!! I'm not trying to beat the horse, just some frustration coming out. I'm also confused as to why Apple lovers are so loyal. Especially when the main plus is that you can now run windows on a Mac, just so you can actually use some decent software.
Wow, Al... I've been using better than decent software for years, and I havent touched Windows nor Linux in that time... always on a Mac. and most of that software came with that "overpriced mac", which, if I had the equal windows machine I would have spent that smae amount of money on less than decent software to do the same thing, and if I was a regular user, not a computer geek, I would have gone over the mac cost with tech support, etc. If I ever do have a problem, I can always go to a Genius Bar and get tech support for free. You are still stuck on old, outdated information about macs. compare the true quality of the hardware, (not just the "on the surface" specs that consumers are force fed to try to sell more cheap PCs) and the software that is included, macs are NOT overpriced. add in the average consumer tech support costs, and Macs are a bargain.

I will grant you (and I have experienced this myself early on) that Mac software is more intuitive than Windows software, and therefore, you must "unlearn" the hoops you have to jump through to get windows to do things before you can truly become proficient wi Macs... Whenever anyone calls on me for windows tech support anymore, I refuse. Its too much of a hassle to fix a windows machine... mac tech support, on the other hand, I am glad to give, even though its not very often, because it's not needed very often.

BIG AL: My frustration is fixing everyone that lives by me PCs on a weekly basis. Work PC never work right, CrackBerry's don't synch up right etc etc.. I am the Navigator for the Midwest Region, that means as a Rep, I get the lovely extra duty of helping other people out with there computers. The head of our IT department uses a Mac, since OSX, there machines are rock solid, hell even PC Magazine gives the new iMac a great rating along with the Mini and the Macbook Pros. Again, computer, cars,HT equipment, women, etc.. etc.. personal preference and use what doesn't make you frustrated. :)

Tony C: It may not be supported or suggested to run the 2nd generation OS on a 3rd generation device, I have seen it done & running quite stably. There are a few features that would be disabled on the newer device however, so that's likely why it's not something they encourage.

Tony C: yes, it was me, should you not be able to find it let me know and I will dig it up for you (i.e. it is on my backup drive)...

Well, my proof reading and typing was getting better but doing this from a iPhone doesn't help. LOL ;)

Geo. : Have you purchased anything yet? If you look on the left where it says "iTunes Store" thee could be some info below it depending on your history. In my case below "iTunes Store" it has Purchased, below that Purchased on Gar's Computer etc... Once you purchase some thing in the iTunes store it gets moved to a category below "iTunes Store" in most cases called "Purchased" which keeps track of the stuff you have boughten. Also if you should have a hard drive fail, you can always go back into that area and recover those songs/movies etc.. if you should ever loose them. I recommend still backing up your hard drive, and music library.

Curtis: When I go into iTunes Store, there's nothing marked "Purchased" or "Purchased on..." to click on.
Gar ( 69.131.201.90 ) at 6:24 PM EST Wednesday, July 21, 2010

BIG AL: You getting tired of kicking that dead horse yet! Try calling those "A"holes or e-mailing them over at Anapod, at least when you call Apple you actually get a live person in the US or Canada. Don't worry Al, it would be long before we are all doing Cloud Computing using limited hardware. ;) The whole Mac verses PC BS is so old it is laughable.
BIG AL ( 75.57.209.102 ) at 5:35 PM EST Wednesday, July 21, 2010

Curtis, not sure if his time is off, but not an Intel chip, so no Windows, and no new OS from Apple. To me, that would convince me never to buy another Apple product. Talk about no support.
BIG AL ( 75.57.209.102 ) at 5:31 PM EST Wednesday, July 21, 2010

Gar; not just checking e-mails, etc... but copying dvds (legally), playing games, watching videos, and on and on. Using a Mac to run Windows is not an answer. There is NO software from Apple that I need, so why pay 3 times as much to run Windows?
Tony C ( 12.233.96.228 ) at 4:06 PM EST Wednesday, July 21, 2010

Did someone mention iTunes Indexer? I can't find it.

Curtis: I suppose that is true. When I bought the unit for the Honda, it was for the 2nd gen model. According to Apple the 3rd Gen is not guaranteed to work with that unit.
Thankfully, my Yamaha and Sony Receiver adaptors still work the same.
Maybe I'll take a ride by BBY and see what they have to say.
