BIG AL ( 75.49.219.167 ) at 10:41 PM EST Thursday, January 26, 2012 Robert; My dad was a mechanic, parts salesman and then a parts counter guy. My mom did payroll for a construction company for about 15 years. Raised 3 kids, and sent 2 to college. Both in their 8o's now and living on 65 acres, with a new car, motor home, house, etc... all paid for. Living on no pension, just social security and interest/dividends from investments. They never made more than $30,000 a year between them. He didn't pass that gene down to me. BIG AL ( 75.49.219.167 ) at 10:30 PM EST Thursday, January 26, 2012 GEO; It's even better for Romney. He has so much money, he doesn't pay any income tax. All his income is capitol gains. GEO: ( 71.39.74.113 ) at 5:51 PM EST Thursday, January 26, 2012 Robert: I am thankful every day that I don't have so much money that I have to worry about whether to pay capital gains tax or income tax. Lol Anyone who criticizes people who pay only as much tax as they're legally obligated to pay is FOS. Everyone does exactly the same thing. Robert ( 75.72.117.174 ) at 12:53 PM EST Thursday, January 26, 2012
Yes, and No. Oled, 4K, cheaper JL Subwoofer, headphones ALL OVER THE PLACE, Panasonic still delivering a KILLER plasma set, the Venetian crowd of 2 channel awesomeness made you think there was no more recession, LG showing off passive 3d as they handing everyone passive glasses (if i were into 3d, i would have made several trips here to get more glasse), but 3d just plain sucks! Robert ( 75.72.117.174 ) at 12:46 PM EST Thursday, January 26, 2012 That's EXACTLY the way it is, I'd rather pay the lower taxes on capital gains and dividends than a higher rate on income. My mom didn't understand that and didn't solicite advice and or listen to me and squandered a fortune paying more in taxes than here parents did with the same amount of money. GEO: ( 71.39.74.113 ) at 12:01 PM EST Thursday, January 26, 2012 BIG AL: Giving the federal government additional revenue--such as by raising taxes--for the purpose of paying off debt, or paying down the deficit is like giving the shopaholic cash to pay off the credit cards. It's guaranteed that neither will pay off the debt; both will just use the money to spend some more. BIG AL ( 75.49.219.167 ) at 12:32 AM EST Thursday, January 26, 2012 GEO; They think taxing the rich will solve this country's problems? "How much money could be raised by hiking taxes on the super rich? Without specifics, it's hard to say. But it's possible to get a ballpark idea if one assumes nothing else changes about the current tax structure. If lawmakers added a new 50% tax rate to taxable income over $1 million, that could raise an additional $34 billion, according to the Tax Policy Center. So adding that new top rate might raise at least an additional $340 billion over 10 years. And if lawmakers opt to tax carried interest as ordinary income, the change could raise an additional $21 billion over 10 years, according to Joint Committee on Taxation estimates. If Capitol Gains taxes were raised to 20% for individuals making more than $200,000 (and couples making more than $250,000) that could raise roughly $107 billion over a decade, the Treasury Department estimated last year. The rate increase would raise less if it were limited to just those making more than $1 million. All told, if one combines the three changes -- setting aside the economic effects if they were all implemented -- it's possible that Treasury could pull in more than $450 billion over a decade. In the context of deficit reduction, $450 billion is less than 5% of the new debt the country is on track to accrue over the next decade." Gar ( 69.130.243.199 ) at 9:34 AM EST Wednesday, January 25, 2012 Good gang, heading to Michigan in a few hours, good morning Joelc. Gar ( 69.130.243.199 ) at 9:33 AM EST Wednesday, January 25, 2012 GEO:: I agree with you but I am sure there are a lot of people who didn't do it legally, just look at our banking system. I don't see too many people who went to jail yet. What congress and the president need to do, is pass the stuff that they do agree on before the primary to show they can work together, the problem is Republicans and Democrats dislike each other so much, instead of putting the American public first they will once again try to screw each other just to get elected/re-elected. :( The problem is there is resentment because of the influence the rich have on our government. Enough from me on politics, anyone go the the CES this year and if so, any cool stuff that is worthy of our forum? GEO: ( 174.30.141.38 ) at 7:47 AM EST Wednesday, January 25, 2012 BIG AL: I think every kid in this country grows up wanting and hoping to be rich when they grow up. To me, the key is that although it's far from perfect, there is no other country in the world which provides greater opportunity to it's citizens, across the full spectrum of society, to achieve that dream. At this point in my life, I know I'll never be rich, but I don't resent those who hit the jackpot, so long as they did it legally. This whole damn Occupy movement completely overlooks the concepts of "opportunity" and "earning" and focuses on resentment of and anger toward those who have achieved the dream. It's really a profound shift in this country's economic values. Joelc ( 99.226.200.29 ) at 5:58 AM EST Wednesday, January 25, 2012 Good morning gang, hope that everyone has a great day...I am back on the road again for the rest of the week... BIG AL ( 75.49.219.167 ) at 12:22 AM EST Wednesday, January 25, 2012 GEO; I have since read that his money is in Bain funds, which is a Cayman investment company that he started. I understand it's all legal, and he pays the capital gain taxes due. I also have nothing against the rich getting richer, I just wish the media would quit rubbing it in. GEO: ( 174.30.141.38 ) at 12:51 PM EST Tuesday, January 24, 2012 BIG AL:. As I understand it, the money Romney has offshore is all after-tax money. By putting it in a foreign bank it is shielded from potential creditors and civil liabilities. I think, however, he pays the appropriate taxes on the gains. A lot of people with his kind of money do it. GEO: ( 174.30.141.38 ) at 12:40 PM EST Tuesday, January 24, 2012 BIG AL:. As I understand it, the money Romney has offshore is all after-tax money. Gar ( 69.130.243.199 ) at 4:42 AM EST Tuesday, January 24, 2012 GEO: Economic disparity has gotten worse in North America, you can not keep on farming jobs out overseas, sure there is a global economy, but there is no fair playing field. Now if China had all the environment rules in place or some type of governing law that says they can't steal technology then maybe we might have a fighting chance. That is a tough one, as no one wants to see stores or companies go under, but if you keep on moving jobs overseas, who in this country are going to be able to afford even the cheap stuff anymore. ;) Big Al, I was being sarcastic with my comment of course, if you look at certain devices they have caused a big wave of things to change and not for the better. Rich, that receiver was Lee Evans from University of Wisconsin. ;) But your player still stripped the ball out, I however do agree with you! :) BIG AL ( 75.49.219.167 ) at 12:56 AM EST Tuesday, January 24, 2012 Gar; " Our love for digital devices is driving us to socialism." I don't see that. It's competition. So the automobile putting the buggy whip manufacturers out of business was socialism? Western Union crapped out because of "the internet", but when was the last time you sent a telegram? Times change and you have to adapt or die. By the way, Best Buy sells online too you know. As far as customer service, I do my shopping online not only because of lower prices and convenience, but because of the lack of customer service in stores. Why bother?
BIG AL ( 75.49.219.167 ) at 12:47 AM EST Tuesday, January 24, 2012 Using taxes as a punishment, that's a tough one. However, hearing that Romney has hundreds of millions invested in offshore funds thereby avoiding the higher U.S. taxes doesn't seem right. If that's correct, another reason for a flat tax with no loopholes/deductions. GEO ( 174.30.141.38 ) at 3:24 PM EST Monday, January 23, 2012 Gar: Should those companies who are taxed higher, or hit with an import tariff then be allowed to pass those costs on to the consumer, thus raising the prices of the goods you buy? Are you saying you wouldn't, then, complain about the higher cost? Rich ( 108.7.237.237 ) at 1:06 PM EST Monday, January 23, 2012 Pats - Ravens Gar/Joel, Yes i think the Pats may have been lucky, but imo it was not on the missed field goal that would have tied the game and not won it. It was on the previous play in the end zone when the reciever caught the ball pulled it in and imo held on to it long enough to be a touchdown... Gar ( 69.130.243.199 ) at 10:17 AM EST Monday, January 23, 2012 Morning guys, I was hoping for another out come for the Super Bowl, like the Ravens and 49ers. But since the Giants beat my team I will be cheering for them. As far as the debate, I totally agree with both of you guys. Just funny to see candidates spewing how they are going to create jobs and they don't have a clue. You can't survive to make money in the long run if you keep on farming out jobs overseas. I think companies that cost jobs should be taxed higher, or companies that ship jobs overseas from the US should be hit with a tariff tax. Joelc ( 99.226.200.29 ) at 7:26 AM EST Monday, January 23, 2012 Good morning gang, hope that everyone has a great day... Gar: Well the 49ers lost more than the Giants won as those two muffed punt returns were inexcusable for such a well coached team... Gar: What you are referring to is the great debate of our time...everyone wants the cheapest prices for all that buy EXCEPT for in the industry where they work...it is time for all societies to decide what they want to do in agreement because otherwise we will all gravitate towards the lowest common multiple... BIG AL ( 75.49.219.167 ) at 12:37 AM EST Monday, January 23, 2012 Gar; We need to bring the manufacturing plants back. Make income taxes equal across the board. More government projects that make sense to employ people. Policing the handouts that the government loves to make to look good, but end up in someone's pocket, get used for something else, or are just abused. Quit padding every single bill with costly favors, and then blaming the other side when it doesn't pass. Stop spending money we don't have on things we don't need! Gar ( 69.130.243.199 ) at 12:11 AM EST Monday, January 23, 2012 This is kind of a hypothetical question, but how is any president going to create more jobs, when the internet is clearly taking millions of jobs away. On top of cheap labor we can't seem to compete with. Our love for digital devices is driving us to socialism. ;) Sorry got into a big debate with my brother-in-law, the drive to stay away from paper products is costing millions of jobs, going full digital to everything has cost USPS/Barnes and Noble and many business to go south. Now Best Buy is in trouble, it sucks, because I don't want to do my shopping online, where customer services is next to nothing. Sorry Rant... Gar ( 69.130.243.199 ) at 12:06 AM EST Monday, January 23, 2012 Joelc: That pass wasn't dropped, it was defended well, as Evans clearly had the ball but had it more or less punched out. I think the Giants will get the best of the Pats, the Giants are like the Packers of last year, clearly on a roll. This year for my team, there defense never showed up, plus they decided to play there worst game in the playoffs. Joelc ( 99.226.200.29 ) at 9:52 PM EST Sunday, January 22, 2012 Gar: I think it is worse than that...the Ravens should have won as the winning touchdown catch was dropped in the end zone...was very upset to see that I do not like the Patriots... Will be interesting to see what happens in the 49ers vs Giants...now 17 17 with 2:00 left... Gar ( 69.130.243.199 ) at 6:14 PM EST Sunday, January 22, 2012 BIG AL: Well I try to enjoy both, hence taking the driving factor out of my situation and taking the train. Enjoying Chicago restaurants etc, hanging out with good friends and plenty of stuff to do. I do however enjoy the country setting as well, that's why I am building a Lake House. On another note! WTF, New England just got very lucky! A Pro Bowl kicker misses a 32 yarder.... I was hoping to see the Ravens! Go 49ers all the way! ;) BIG AL ( 75.49.219.167 ) at 4:06 PM EST Sunday, January 22, 2012 Gar; I'm a country boy. I would rather see trees than buildings. I've been to Chicago many times, and never really had any fun. Too many people, and traffic, noise, stench, it's too much for me. I used to force myself to go to the Shedd, or the art museum, or Science and Industry, and by the time I'd get there I was so stressed I couldn't enjoy myself. Gar ( 69.130.243.199 ) at 1:58 PM EST Sunday, January 22, 2012 BIG AL: Chicago is a fun city, plenty to see etc.. But I rarely dive it anymore, so I can appreciate it more. The Train has been a very useful mode of transportation so far, just wish the idiots in office would pass a bill to rebuild it, using our own technology. Gasser ( 71.106.227.140 ) at 11:38 AM EST Saturday, January 21, 2012 BIG AL: Ain't that the truth! You've either got it or you don't! Etta had it, and through all of her issues, she kept it. The last time I saw her was before her weight loss surgery. They brought her out on a scooter, and she sang from a chair. The voice, the spark and the 'tude was still there. I listened to her all day yesterday, and maybe all day today. From "Mystery Lady: Songs of Billie Holiday", Right Time, Stickin' to my Guns, to "At Last" and "I'd Rather Be Blind". She could do it all. Jazz, Blues, Soul, Rock. Didn't matter. She influenced everyone from Janis Joplin to Joss Stone. I don't think many young women are going to be influenced by anyone coming out of any of those ridiculous TV talent contests. The LA Times had a beautiful front page obit today, as well as another article in the Calendar (entertainment) section. In case you can't tell, I'm a huge fan. The "Band in Heaven" just got a whole lot better. BIG AL ( 75.49.219.167 ) at 5:34 PM EST Friday, January 20, 2012 Gasser; Very sad. But my offense and defense didn't show up, such is life. People are sore winners on Yahoo Threads bashing GB, people short term memory, they have won a lot of titles over the years and they are not owned by some Rich prick with a Axe to grind. Rich ( 108.7.237.237 ) at 12:50 AM EST Tuesday, January 10, 2012 Sharp 60" LCD My brother invited me over to his place to see his new remolded family room. He did a good job the room was really nice and it included a new Sharp 60" lcd tv. He told me he wasn't happy with the new set, he said the flesh tones were off a bit, i said lets take a look. Well i didn't know he purchased a new set so i did not bring my calibration disks. All i had was my eyes and knowledge from you guys. I also didn't have a lot of time, i had to be somewhere else. The only sources i had were cable tv and dvd (no blu-ray) As soon as i turned it on it looked like crap! There was a red push, all the faces looked pink. Went right into the pic menu and brought the red down a bit, Then switched from "vivid" to "movie" mode. On this set i did not like movie mode it was too dark and it lost background detail. I am already not liking this set! So i switched to normal mode and it looked better. Sure enough the contrast was 100% so i turned it down until the pic looked just a little too dark and brought the brightness up a bit to compensate. The color & tint was set at 50%, i left that alone. The sharpness was at 80%! I said that has to come way down! He said No i already did that and it makes the picture look blurry. I said it dosen't make it look blurry, it will soften the picture and make it look film like instead of this cartoon you're looking at, it will look less edgy. He said go for it. As i'm turning the sharpness down i couldn't believe my eyes, instead of the pic getting softer & softer it was getting blurry and out of focus! I said this set is screwed up! Either retun it or get it calibrated! I had to turn the sharpness up to about 50%. Next i wanted to adjust the color temp. Well instead of warm 1 warm 2 normal cool 1 cool 2 the set had red, blue, and normal! i shook my head and said WTF lol. So i tried all 3 and left it on red. Now i'm scrolling through the pic menu trying to find and disable all the pic enhancements DNR ect. For the life of me i could not find them and i was really pressed for time. But my brother was thrilled the set really did look a lot better! He has more patience than me, i would have returned it...But he was happy and thats all that counts, and obviously he's not exactly a videofile I just want to say if there are any Sharp tv owners in here, this is not a knock on Sharp! This is a knock on this paticular model and i did not bother to look behind the set to see the model # because i could care less lol.

I'm assuming your insurance carrier will want you to file a police report, so don't forget to do that. Probably not much chance of finding the culprit, but you can start by notifying all local U-Haul places to be looking out for a truck return with damage consistent with where he hit the Jag. I just used a U-Haul truck in October and they inspect them very thoroughly when you take them and when you return them. If they can find the damaged truck, they ought to be able to tie it to the Jag with paint transfers. Good luck. GEO ( 174.30.141.38 ) at 11:15 AM EST Sunday, January 1, 2012 Happy New Year, everyone. Gasser ( 161.209.206.1 ) at 7:49 PM EST Saturday, December 31, 2011 Happy New Years Eve to me So I'm driving home from doing a favor for a friend. I'm talking on the phone with my wife when she says, "Some guy just hit my car (Jaguar)." It was parked on the street, and some moron in a U-Haul truck pulls wide to make a U-turn, and drives down the side of my Jag S. Knocks off the mirror, and does minor damage to all the doors and quarter panels. To make matters worse, he slows down, looks at it, and just drives off. BIG AL ( 75.57.217.207 ) at 1:09 AM EST Wednesday, December 28, 2011 BYork; I asked a couple guys that admin other forums, and they thought our costs were reasonable for our format. They did say there are cheaper alternatives, but we would most likely sacrifice speed and/or reliability. A couple guys did say they would pay extra to cover, but without knowing their limits, it would be hard to calculate how low the other's payments would be. I would suggest they email you their limits, and see what can be figured out. BYork ( 151.151.109.15 ) at 9:06 PM EST Tuesday, December 27, 2011Here's where we are... 8 people will contribute. 2 have indicated they will not/cannot pay the amount each would have to pay if it's split 8-ways. Frankly....$48 is really more than I can afford. (not to mention the addition of partial-payments makes the process an even greater nightmare than usual...ask Big Al about how painful it is...) I'm making the command decision...if no additional people step up to help contribute by 12/31, we will be defaulting to LinkeIn. If that happens and we decide to pick up after that and move to another ISP and re-generate the site, I'm going to be opting out from managing things. Membership is free for a basic LinkedIn account, and once you join, you can check out our new group there, at the link included in this post. We're going to decide by Dec 31 if we move there, pay for this site to continue into 2012, or just quietly fade into history .....so check the LinkedIn group and lend your opinion to the decision! BIG AL ( 99.41.242.93 ) at 1:22 AM EST Thursday, December 15, 2011 China to impose duties The new duties on American-made large cars and SUVs range from a 2 percent levy on BMW models to 15 percent for Chrysler and almost 22 percent for GM. Ford Motor Co does not export U.S.-built vehicles to China. "Clearly, the intention was to inflict pain on the Americans above all," said Georges Dieng, a Paris-based analyst with Natixis Securities. U.S.-China trade tension has been increasing in recent months, particularly in the solar industry, where tit-for-tat investigations into accusations of unfair practices have underscored leaders' warnings of rising protectionism amid gloomy global economic forecasts. Mercedes builds its M-Class, R-Class and GL-Class SUVs for the U.S. market and export at a factory in Alabama. About 10 percent of that plant's output - or 16,000 vehicles - is shipped to China. "We hope that we can find a quick solution," said Daimler spokesman Han Tjan. BMW, which exports the X3, X5 and X6 sport utility vehicle from South Carolina, said it did not expect the new tariff to have a "significant impact" on its business in China. "We are less affected than other manufacturers, and we are not unprepared for the measure," a BMW spokeswoman told Reuters. BMW sells about 70 percent of the SUVs made in South Carolina to markets outside the United States, said spokesman Kenn Sparks. CHINA: MORE TRADE ISSUES AHEAD GM, the U.S. automaker with the largest presence in China, said it would work with representatives of both the U.S. and Chinese governments to try to find a solution "consistent with a constructive global trade environment." GM expects to sell about 11,000 SUVs and large cars built in the United States to China this year. Those models include the Buick Enclave and the Cadillac CTS and Escalade. Chrysler said it was reviewing the decision to determine what impact it could have on its business. Chrysler, controlled by Italy's Fiat, said in June that it was on track to sell 40,000 vehicles in China this year. The Jeep Grand Cherokee went on sale in China this year and Chrysler had been looking to export its 300 model large sedan. Honda Motor Co Ltd exports Acura TL sedans built in Ohio to China. Those cars would also be subject to an additional 4.4 percent tariff. As of November, Honda had sold 362 TL models in China. In 2009, China eclipsed the United States as the world's largest auto market, but its national car industry remains weak and fragmented, leaving 70 percent of the market to U.S., European, Japanese and South Korean makers. Sales of passenger cars in China rose more than 30 percent in 2010, but the pace has slowed sharply in 2011 and sales gains are expected to be closer to 5 percent this year. U.S. vehicle exports to China were valued at $3.5 billion in 2010 and $4.2 billion through October of this year, according to the U.S. Commerce Department. Why should I have to pay for tons of channels I hate, the companies that offer specific channels you can pick and pay for will do very well if this ever happens. Robert ( 75.72.117.174 ) at 3:09 PM EST Thursday, December 1, 2011 Re: TV via internet GEO: same applies in our household. The issue is that not no one has all the content, and even "all" the content is not available to everyone. Did you know therights for digital content is more expensive than the rights for physical media, its more expensive to process/distribute physical media, look no further than Netflix. Three years ago, Netflix wanted to be all digital in 5 years. problem is they don;t have access to much digial content. there are two shows I like to watch, and neither are available on Hulu, etc. The google tv experiment at BBY failed miserably and they had the best chance of uniting things, but they too failed to secure enough content to make it the one stop shop for everyone. I cancelled Comcast cable a while ago and kept the high speed internet. That also gives you basic cable which is really just the network channels and some fluff - also great if you speak Spanish. Then I decided to stream Netflix to catch up on TV shows that I never watched, like Weeds, Mad Men and Breaking Bad. However, once you blow through the couple seasons Netflix has (included in your monthly subscription) you will have to pay for the new episodes which is what I'm doing using Amazon. I use Apple TV and love the display, interface and picture quality. I also use VieraCast on my Panasonic TV which gets me lots of apps. I have not used Hulo + but I hear good things about it. Gar ( 69.130.243.199 ) at 12:23 PM EST Wednesday, November 30, 2011 GEO:: I am in a similar dilemma, I really like DirecTV but there getting way too expensive, the problem with streaming devices and services there not as reliable yet. They are getting better, but over simplifying things cost jobs, I mean look at what the MP3 player did to music, I see some thing similar going the way of movies. :( I don't want to have to pay for TV shows that are free, I mean if I miss them and I really like the show I will do VOD on DirecTV and in most cases they are free, but other services charge for them. I want a service where I can watch free TV, and then have the ability to watch movies, rent/download and or buy them. The good thing about iTunes so far has been if your HD crashes Apple/iTunes keeps a record of what you have purchased, this comes in very handy, especially if you have a hard drive crash, which I have just recently. Let me know what you find as well, as I am trying to decide myself. I wish Sonos did video, as they are so far the best wireless system I have used on the Audio end. With Apple TV, you can download a ton of movies and burn movies you have over to the system, and I can stream from my house in Madison, to my Lake House an hour way, which is some thing I am looking into doing as well. Joelc: I am doing in-wall speakers and Sonos system at the Lake house using the Sonos Amp and a couple of Zone Player 90's. I will be using a NAS Hard Drive or a Macmini, not sure on this yet. BIG AL ( 99.29.140.170 ) at 12:13 AM EST Thursday, November 24, 2011 Tony C; that's what I did. It runs about half the house. We couldn't afford a big enough one to run the whole house, the generator, or the amount of gas it uses. It kicks in after 15 seconds without power, and it's fairly quiet. It took 2 guys 2 days to install it. They said it's the 6th one they've installed in my subdivision, and about the 12th this year. Apparently a lot of people around here are fed up with the power outages. ComEd should be paying for part of these generators considering how much we pay them for DEPENDABLE power. Tony C ( 76.29.102.203 ) at 9:45 PM EST Wednesday, November 23, 2011 BIG AL: Like Robert, I always wanted one too, but we never have outages here. My cousin who lives in Park Ridge has them frequently. So he got one that's powered by natural gas. It kicks in and gets right into power panel to runs the whole house like nothing happened. BIG AL ( 75.49.217.228 ) at 10:08 PM EST Tuesday, November 22, 2011 Robert; I looked at the water powered backups. Some new designs are really nice, and efficient. After the 17 hr outage at less than 20 degrees, we decided it would be better to be able to power up a few more things. Just the essentials, like the internet modem, my computer, TV and satellite dish. I still like the idea of the sump backup, in case of pump failure, but that can wait now. Gar ( 69.130.243.199 ) at 3:23 PM EST Tuesday, November 22, 2011 I just picked up a foosball table used for our Lake House and the guy tried to sell me a brand new Generator. He lived in Texas and during one of the Hurricanes he used it for one summer on and off, he said he paid 2K for it and was selling it for $700 bucks. If we had more outages here I would have boughten it, but we are lucky and only get about 2 a year that usually last only minutes. Robert ( 75.72.117.174 ) at 9:17 AM EST Tuesday, November 22, 2011 BIG AL: I'm officially jealous. We don;t get any power outages but that doesn't stop me from wanting a generator..... Zombie apocalypse and all. Everytime I walk into Costco, I eye their offerings..... Regarding sump pump, research water powered sump. They are expensive, but they work. It'll be nice to have the peace of mind. We've had about 16 power outages this year. The average was over an hour, so it will get used. I know an hour doesn't seem long, but they usually happen during a rainstorm. It only takes an hour or so for the sump to start overflowing if it's raining hard, and my battery backup only runs about 30 min. at a third the normal pump output. Every time it starts raining my blood pressure goes up. Now I just have to get it installed, and pay for it of course.
BIG AL ( 99.36.28.15 ) at 1:03 PM EST Thursday, November 17, 2011 Stuck waiting for a delivery truck with my generator. They were supposed to show between 8-10 am. They called at 8:45, and said I was bumped to 10-12. They called at 11, and said I was bumped to 12-2 pm. Bastards are worse than the cable co. To make matters worse, I have to call the installer as soon as they get here so he can get it in the back yard. He's not happy about the delay either. Now the neighbors let their dog out to roam the countryside, and my dog will be barking for hours out of jealousy. So much for my early warning system. BIG AL ( 99.36.28.15 ) at 12:10 AM EST Sunday, November 13, 2011 Tony C; I don't need anything that fancy. I never watch extras, I don't network movies/music, don't want 3D, and I have a network switch to hardwire my HT components. I doubt I'll even watch much blu-ray. I just don't want to wear out my DVD recorder watching movies, and want upconversion out the components. That means an older player. Unfortunately, everybody loads the latest firmware, and that negates the component upconvert. So used is tricky, and new ( old) stock date of manufacture is unreliable. Tony C ( 76.29.102.203 ) at 8:26 PM EST Friday, November 4, 2011 My first day at the Sony Outlet store today. Pretty easy so far but also similar to Guitar Center. Too bad that manager was such a jerk. All the people here seem pretty nice - so far. Saw a 3D BR player for $99 that I want. I'm too new to ask what my cost might be - it may not be that much better anyway. All the LED TVs look pretty nice but all you're looking at are Sonys. BIG AL ( 99.73.105.255 ) at 10:40 PM EST Wednesday, October 26, 2011 Rich, Gar; I never have any luck with insurance. Some people get windfalls, like my in-laws. My bro-in-law had a roof that leaked for years. Too cheap to fix it. They get a small hail storm, and he gets a whole new roof. Does it matter that all the wood under the shingles is rotten? Nope, hail damage. Sister-in-law has a small tornado blow through. Her trampoline flies up to the rickety old collapsing chimney, on her rickety old collapsing house. She gets a new chimney, siding, windows, trampoline, and garage roof. Both of them are with State Farm. When I was with State Farm, they made me pay almost double for 6 months to cover my house till it sold, because they mistakenly dropped the coverage on it. Good Luck! I had some property damage back in late august from hurricane irene, would you believe i'm still battling the ins company! I had to hire an independent adjuster to avoid a lot of out of pocket expense. I have a meeting with him tomorrow at 3pm. So in a few hours i'll know where i stand. Everything else (wife, kids, ect) is fine. So glad to see You in here!!

Tony C ( 76.29.102.203 ) at 11:43 AM EST Tuesday, October 25, 2011 Another small job So yesterday, I was offered a job at the local Sony outlet store. Again, I applied on a fluke (like I did Guitar Center) and they were happy to have me. More money than Guitar Center and way better place to work and nice people too. I don't know if I told you guys about the manager at G.C. He never looks me in the eye, never talks to me - unless he's repremanding me. I was always on edge when he was in the store. Nonetheless, I was really not sure about making the move to another retail job. I told myself, that I'll see how it goes today. As usual, he opened the door for me, without looking at me or saying a word. And as usual, I greeted him with a cheerful 'Good Morning". Then it just hit me that this guy was just too much of a jerk. So I told him, before we walked into the store that I was offered a position and I was going to take it. He didn't look at me, he just took out his keys, unlocked the front door, opened it and said, "Go ahead." I walked out knowing that I did the right thing. BIG AL ( 99.73.105.255 ) at 3:48 PM EST Monday, October 17, 2011 MOVING Even worse when you have something expensive that needs to go, and all you can get are garage sale prices. Robert ( 75.72.117.174 ) at 10:39 AM EST Monday, October 17, 2011 Joelc: Nature hates a vacuum..... and yes, getting rid of the crap/extra stuff is a blessing, but also a headache to figure out what goes (sometimes that's easy) and a real headache when you want to get rid of something but there is no other home.... 5 years ago we went from 4500 sq ft to 2500 sq ft and it took quite a few garage sales...... I still have a room or two worth of stuff I'd like to get rid of but haven't for one reason or another..... Robert ( 75.72.117.174 ) at 10:35 AM EST Monday, October 17, 2011 RIP Dan Wheldon Such a tragedy.... A good friend is the B&W race director and was so excited to have Dan for next year.Reminded me on when Alex Zinardi had his accident while on the Pioneer team, just plain sucks. All the B&W guys were out there too. My father in law sent us note last night telling us that Wheldon was a far distant relative too......way far, but would have been cool to connect with him next year at the races.... Joelc ( 38.99.144.35 ) at 8:35 AM EST Monday, October 17, 2011 Tony C: As much as I hate moving and think that it is one of the worst "life experiences" as it takes so long to get the new place setup exactly how you like the one benefit is getting rid of all the crap that we tend to accumulate... Tony C ( 76.29.102.203 ) at 10:34 PM EST Sunday, October 16, 2011 Blu Ray BIG AL: I've heard good things about the PS3 as a BR player. I owned one for a while but really wanted to use it as a media player - that didn't work out. Currently, I use a Pioneer (165A, I think) for SACD/DVDA and I have a cheap Sony BR player hooked up as well. So maybe you can just spend $200 and get that done. PS: If I bring home another guitar, my wife will kill me. Bisides, soon I won't have the space. Joelc ( 99.226.200.29 ) at 6:01 AM EST Saturday, October 15, 2011 Good morning gang, I hope that everyone has a great day... Gar: +1, especially as it relates to work ethics... Gar ( 69.130.243.199 ) at 1:53 AM EST Saturday, October 15, 2011 Tony C: I hope all works out for you, as I am in my mid-40s now, and if I don't go back into management I can see the exact same thing happening. Most of the US companies could give a rat's ass about the employees they hire, sad thing as most older adults have a much better work ethic then most of the younger ones. Joelc ( 38.99.144.35 ) at 5:59 PM EST Friday, October 14, 2011 Good evening gang, hope that everyone is doing well... BIG AL: Good to see that your dog is on the mend...and I hear you about travelling and all as it can get tiring but, in this economy, it is a well paying job so no complaints here... Tony C: Sorry to hear about the house as I know, sinc eI have been there, how nice it is and how much you love it...good luck on the sale...great attitude that you have... BIG AL ( 99.73.105.255 ) at 5:59 PM EST Friday, October 14, 2011 I'm going to give up on the current blu-ray player. No matter what I try, it locks up the video output of the Onkyo. I will move the blu-ray to a different tv. I'm basically looking for a player to take the strain off my dvd recorder. I figured I might as well go blu-ray so I had that option. I would like to play SACD/DVD-A, but not a necessity. So used OPPO $279, new PS3 $249, cheap blu-ray $100, or a DVD player with SACD/DVD-A capability $110. I like the option of games on PS3, but not sure how well a DVD player it would make for daily use (and wife use). I don't have any blu-ray discs, and my TV is only component 1080i, so the blu-ray player is overkill, for now. The dvd player with sacd/dvd-a is the sensible way to go, BUT the best one I can find is a Pioneer DV-610AV-K. The player looks great, but it's designed for overseas market, and has no warranty in US. I'm leaning toward the PS3, but I can't find much current info on using it as a DVD movie player, and I don't have any PS3 games. Anyone have experience, or suggestions? BIG AL ( 99.73.105.255 ) at 3:38 PM EST Friday, October 14, 2011 Tony C; And you get the big discount on guitars! Good luck on the sale. Tons of houses for sale around here. A lot are doing just what you plan, on the market for a couple months then off. Are you using a realtor?
Tony C ( 76.29.102.203 ) at 10:31 AM EST Friday, October 14, 2011 Hi guys. A neighnor had me over to talk about building an HT in his basement as well as multiple TVs in the bar area. He's also talking about a new Crestron system that's controlable from your iPhone or iPad. Pretty cool. The wife and I decided that we'll put the house up for sale. With my new Guitar Center income, it would be irresponsible to stay. We'll put it on the market for 45 days or so, until the leaves are gone, then we'll take it off the market and wait for the leaves to come back. When I built the house, it was meant to be an investment...live here ten years, sell and really downsize with more cash. I knew that I wouldn't have a job long, but I didn't expect all this...I thought I'd find something easily for half the Sony money and things would work out. Oh well, at least we are healthy and so are all the kids. BIG AL ( 99.73.105.255 ) at 4:22 PM EST Thursday, October 13, 2011 anybody have a 3-4 year old Sony TV? http://www.hdtvetc.com/hdtv/sony-issues-non-recall-of-hdtvs.php BIG AL ( 99.73.105.255 ) at 4:00 PM EST Thursday, October 13, 2011 Joelc; I don't even like going into town to eat dinner, and you fly to Barbados. I wish I had more to post, but it all sounds too boring. The wife took the dog in today to get his stitches out, and the cone off. He hardly ever barked, has some Akita in him, but with the cone on, he was barking constantly. I think that satellite dish was bringing in sounds from the next county. Or maybe it was like singing in the shower, he just liked the acoustics. The good thing is I need a good chunk of change to stick down on the house, and we tried the refinance on this house but got screwed over on our appraisal. Bottom line, if you want to be safe, do a H.A.R.P. loan, as you don't need an appraisal done. Very quick even at 90 lbs. he could jump and catch birds mid flight. 3 weeks after the surgery to fix his leg, he started losing weight and getting very wobbly. Turns out his pancreas shut down, and his blood sugar was over 600. Started him on insulin, but he had already lost 20 lbs. of muscle, he had no fat to lose. After a couple weeks getting his blood sugar stabilized, he started getting a cataract in one eye. Vet said nothing we can do because of the diabetes. A week later he can't open his eye, can barely walk, won't eat, so he goes back in. Vet says he has glaucoma, and needs emergency surgery because he's in really bad pain. They take the eyeball out, and sew his eyelid shut. Put him in the cone collar for 2 weeks. Every time he starts getting back to his old self, trying to run around, acting like a pup again, something else goes wrong. Noticed last night he's getting a cataract in the other eye. Strange how things snowball out of control so fast. Joelc ( 99.226.200.29 ) at 8:55 AM EST Sunday, October 2, 2011 Good morning gang, hope that everyone has a great day... Gar ( 69.131.204.60 ) at 1:27 AM EST Saturday, October 1, 2011 Joelc: I go to Chicago about 3 times a month now, one of my main accounts in Rush Hospital as they do a lot of Genetic research in my field of work, which deals with Blood disorders. I am a big fan of the Windy City! Anyone ever down that way, let me know, dinner on me! :) Joelc ( 38.99.144.35 ) at 7:08 PM EST Thursday, September 29, 2011 Gar and Tiny C: In Chicago tomorrow...either of you guys around... Moving this puppy up North and putting this set, in it's place. http://store.sony.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&productId=8198552921666327041 Gar ( 184.60.97.220 ) at 2:45 PM EST Monday, September 26, 2011 Speaking of TVs... Doh!!!! ;) I guess I will be a Sony Fanboy for some time... As many remember I had a XBR1 the famous TV that Cajun called had the green haze issue. Mine seemed to be fine but I decided to check it out to be sure and it had the issue. Sony tried to fix it twice, but replacing the Optical Block, both times it failed. So they replaced it with my Trusty XBR2, which I have had for 7 years and 7000 hours on first bulb, well now they are offering me a replacement and I still get to keep the set, and I still have an extra bulb replacement. Now I am finding out what model and what I have to pay out of pocket, which I hope isn't much..... Geo: Happy belated Birthday wishes! Geo. ( 72.201.5.10 ) at 9:23 AM EST Monday, September 26, 2011 BIG AL: He's going to announce his plan to get them back together right after he returns from vacation. In the meantime, he's blaming the Tea Party for making them unwilling to compromise with each other. BIG AL ( 99.73.105.255 ) at 10:31 PM EST Sunday, September 25, 2011 Geo; Wait, what? Jesse and Kat broke up??!! Oh my gawd! Has Obama said what he's going to do about it? Maybe if he gives them each a few million bucks they'll reconsider. Geo. ( 72.201.5.10 ) at 9:54 PM EST Sunday, September 25, 2011 The day after my birthday and I broke it. Geo. ( 72.201.5.10 ) at 12:27 PM EST Sunday, September 25, 2011 You know what's wrong with this country? I go to the USA Today website and on the front page I read, "Jesse James and Kat Von D call it quits again." Why am I reading that in a freakin' newspaper??!! If I'm sitting here wondering how Jesse James and Kat Von D are getting along I'll go to their own self-centered, self-possessed websites and find out. GEO ( 72.201.5.10 ) at 9:46 AM EST Sunday, September 25, 2011 Thank You! Thanks for the birthday wishes, guys. My son came in from Texas for the weekend and all for of us were together for a very nice lunch. Then we did the final walk-through on the retirement house we are buying even though it will be a little while before retirement. The market is just too good to ignore, though, and an interest rate of 3 5/8% on a 7/1 ARM. All-in-all, a good day. We won't steal anything, but you know how wild a nerd party can get, and stuff just gets broken.
Gar ( 184.60.97.220 ) at 9:19 PM EST Tuesday, September 20, 2011 BIG AL: They are very comparable to some of the bookshelves I have heard, I didn't believe it when I read the reviews but when I heard them I was floored. I was more floored by these speakers which are bookshelves and not very big, but a huge sound! I will be going with these up front with a matching center and then rear in-walls. Or, I will just use my Martin Logan's and find a matching center and go with some rear in-walls they make, the problem is I don't want anything really expensive, as this is a Lake House and I don't want stuff wrecked or stolen. http://www.psbspeakers.com/products/imagine/Imagine-Mini BIG AL ( 99.73.106.123 ) at 11:53 PM EST Monday, September 19, 2011 Gar; when you compared them to the bookshelfs you got me worried.
Gar ( 184.60.97.220 ) at 8:49 PM EST Monday, September 19, 2011 BIG AL: I agree, hence the PSB actually sound pretty darn good and are much bigger. BIG AL ( 99.73.106.123 ) at 4:33 PM EST Monday, September 19, 2011 Gar; I prefer an outdoor speaker with a much higher bass output than an indoor speaker. The bass just disappears outside. Joelc ( 212.135.90.98 ) at 2:42 AM EST Monday, September 19, 2011 Good morning gang, hope that everyone has a great day... Gasser ( 71.106.227.140 ) at 1:29 PM EST Sunday, September 18, 2011 Maybe time for an archive? The forum is acting up again. Delay in seeing the typing. I believe that it goes back to normal after an archive. Thanks guys. Gasser ( 71.106.227.140 ) at 1:27 PM EST Sunday, September 18, 2011 Gar:PSB's are on my veryshort listed of favorite affordable bookshelf speakers now. I recommend them to anyone that's looking for something small. If these are even close to the indoor models, it's a no brainer. I have had good luck with the Sonance and Niles outdoor speakers that I have installed for various clients over the years. I have installed them here in CA as well as Washington state, Oregon and AZ. Some of them have been working for 10 years without being covered or taken in during the winter. The only problem I ever had was one of the covers of one of the Niles was blown off by a Columbia River winter storm, never to be seen again. Niles actually sent us two replacement covers for free. Screwed them to the speakers, and good as new. Joelc ( 212.135.90.98 ) at 8:13 AM EST Sunday, September 18, 2011 Good morning gang...I am on the road again and am now in London, England... Gar ( 184.60.97.220 ) at 12:15 AM EST Sunday, September 18, 2011 Joelc: No problem I had a chance to listen to a ton of outdoor speakers over the last few days at different dealers and I must say the PSB CS1000 sounds as good as any great bookshelf speaker that I have heard so far! http://www.psbspeakers.com/articles/Soundstage-Reviews-CS1000-Universal-In-Outdoor-Speaker Joelc ( 38.99.144.35 ) at 1:03 PM EST Saturday, September 17, 2011 Good morning gang...I hope that everyone has a great day... Joelc ( 99.226.200.29 ) at 9:50 PM EST Thursday, September 15, 2011 Gar: Apologies for taking so long to get this information to you but theses are the speakers that I am using outdoors...they are very durable and survive the winters well... http://www.sonance.com/products/speakers/detail/137 Joelc ( 38.99.144.35 ) at 9:09 PM EST Wednesday, September 14, 2011 BIG AL: Thanks for the kind words, you and everyone else here is always welcome...as far as the decor I like clean, no clutter and simple with a warm feeling which I believe we achieved...and, the only thing that I would have done differently is order chocolate brown chairs but, not a big deal as the wife is happy... The money thing is still a problem as the costs -- because of the design problems -- got completely out of control so I am hoping to recoup a large portion of it...again, thanks for the kind wishes... Gar ( 184.60.97.220 ) at 12:20 PM EST Wednesday, September 14, 2011 GEO.: For $220 bucks I can get the front 3 and then do 4 in-walls for sides and rears. The in-walls will cost me more most likely. Done deal, as I have a pair of Martin Logan speakers I will sell to pay for the whole thing. After hearing them I was pleasantly surprised and at a loss for words as they were very good. Any suggestions on a good decent inexpensive sub 10-12inch? GEO. ( 209.180.126.10 ) at 12:12 PM EST Wednesday, September 14, 2011 Gar: Those Pioneers also received a very favorable review in Home Theater magazine a month or two ago. Gar ( 184.60.97.220 ) at 9:36 AM EST Wednesday, September 14, 2011 BIG AL: Wow, that Leopoldi Stingray sure is cool looking. I had mostly a assortment of African Ciclids. Then I had one 100 gal tank and one 2 50 gal tanks. Only thing I have now is a 5gal tank with a very active Beta fish in my suns room. LOL The good news is salt is much easier to manage these days. Joelc: Thanks as the Yamaha's were horrible sounding, so I am not going that route. I am however going this route for a Lake House HT, very inexpensive and for the money $349 for 5 speakers and a sub, remarkably very good sounding, but then again they used a very smart speaker designer. http://hometheater.about.com/od/loudspeakerreviews/fr/Pioneer-Bookshelf-Home-Theater-Speaker-System_2.htm I will most likely go with Pioneer in-wall for the rear of the HT and a tower version of these sp |
