If needed you could do some part time HT sales or installs like you did back in the 90's. What was the name of the A/V store you worked at? Was it Audiophiles or something like that? Rich ( 96.233.39.161 ) at 11:52 PM EST Wednesday, November 19, 2008 Chris L.: lol i think you're right

Kieran ( 76.90.10.44 ) at 12:06 PM EST Tuesday, November 18, 2008 720 vs 1080 T-Man: Forgot to add, read this for more info on 1080p vs. 720p http://www.carltonbale.com/2006/11/1080p-does-matter/ Kieran ( 76.90.10.44 ) at 12:05 PM EST Tuesday, November 18, 2008 720 vs 1080 T-Man: That is a true statement for MOST people with TYPICAL eyesight and viewing distances. MOST people do not sit at THX recommended viewing distances from their 50" TVs. MOST people sit several feet further back from the screen than THX recommends. If you sit at the THX recommended distance for a 50" screen (max ~8 feet from the screen, minimum ~6 feet) then you MIGHT see a difference (more likely the closer to 6 feet you sit). If on the other hand, you sit at more normal distances, say 10 to 15 feet, then unless you have eyes like Yeager, you probably won't notice a difference between 1080 and 720. The obvious suggestion then, is to spend the extra money on a 720p display with very good processing and image quality, rather than an equivalently priced 1080 screen with lesser processing and/or picture quality. Of course the TV manufacturers have made that suggestion all but moot now-a-days because it has become VERY difficult to FIND a 50" 720p display with excellent processing and image quality. Just like when buying a camera, it's not so much about the pixels, but rather the quality of the optics. With a TV, it's not so much about the pixels as it is about the image processing software (deinterlacing, etc.) and the panel quality (e.g. black levels.) I saw photos from a 1.0 megapixel camera the other day that blew me away. I could not believe they were only 1MP resolution. The optics were custom made in house optics, designed specifically for the type of shots the camera was used for, and matched perfectly to the CCD size. Gar ( 69.128.158.208 ) at 9:34 AM EST Tuesday, November 18, 2008 Just a warning on the video, it is very long......But very interesting. Gar ( 69.128.158.208 ) at 9:18 AM EST Tuesday, November 18, 2008 Modern Money Mechanics Anyone ever read this book? I had to for my Economics class in college and now I see that Zeitgeist Addendum is using it for whatever there agenda is..... Interesting video they have, and they quote Ron Paul, who I liked as a candidate but didn't quite make it.. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=7065205277695921912 I think my company uses this type of fuzzy math on not paying us out... :) LOL Gar ( 69.128.158.208 ) at 9:15 AM EST Tuesday, November 18, 2008 720 vs 1080 T-Man: That depends, on some other points as well. Sitting distance etc.. I have a Pioneer 5080 model and was going to wait for there 1080p model to come down before I bought. Well at 13 feet away I didn't noticed any difference, so I saved a ton of money and got the 720p model. T-Man ( 71.240.99.225 ) at 8:14 AM EST Tuesday, November 18, 2008 720 vs 1080 I read someplace that with under a 50" flat panel, you won't notice any difference between 720 and 1080. True, false, depends? TIA Joelc ( 76.64.12.86 ) at 6:42 AM EST Tuesday, November 18, 2008 Rich: Am busy right now for a bunch of reasons including year end; that is, it is year end for both my company as well as year end for a numbe rof my clients which is keeping me busy...as far as xmas is concerned I hop-e that everyone here -- including myself -- gets some down time not only to "recharge the batteries" but also to spend time with family and friends...as always, I will take a few days off and do nothing but lie low, may even try not looking at the BB, now that would be a BIG cahnge! Joelc ( 76.64.12.86 ) at 6:39 AM EST Tuesday, November 18, 2008 Good morning gang...hope that everyone has a great day! Rich ( 96.233.39.161 ) at 2:29 AM EST Tuesday, November 18, 2008 Online Price Matching/Checking Just a little side note about my last post. A very small but recent example about the importance of online price checking just occured a couple of weeks ago on my birthday, my daughter and daughter in law bought me a Garmin Nav at BB, the price was $199.00, I went to the BB site clicked place in cart and sure enough it was $179.00. Well the good news is BB is less than 2 miles from my home so 5 mins later i was at the customer service counter with my sales slip. It only took a minute or 2 to verify the price and i told the clerk i wanted to buy the Garmin leather case that i picked up in the store before i walked over to cust serv. Welp i got a $24 case for 4 bucks A more meaningful example was a couple of years ago when i saved just over $200 on a Samsung lcd, The 26" set was $1199 at BB and CC, Target had it on sale for $999. I wanted to take a shot at BB to see if they would match the price because the nearest Target was about 15 miles away. Welp it only took a minute for the salesman to see the same make and model at Target for $200 less and he rang me up at 999. See what happens when u do your homework lol !!
Rich ( 96.233.39.161 ) at 1:38 AM EST Tuesday, November 18, 2008 Circuit City BF ad Yeah i hope CC is able to hang on, and thats an excellent point about price matching. Just in case there is just one person in here that is not doing this... I can't stress enough how important it is to go online to BB CC Target ect, go to all of them, place item in cart BEFORE walking in the store. I can almost guarantee you the item will be marked and rung up at the regular price and NOT the "place in cart" price unless you are aware of it! And then the idiot sales person has to go to his own web site to see that you are right. I have saved several hundred dollars just over the past few years by simply turning on my computer before starting my car... Joelc ( 216.223.143.92 ) at 6:55 PM EST Monday, November 17, 2008 Evening guys...been so busy lately that I have not even been able to drop in for my morning fix...and finally, hope that everyone is doing well... He feels strongly enough about this that he said he's "going to throw his weight (as prez) around" to influence a change. LOL. Kieran ( 76.90.10.44 ) at 12:46 AM EST Monday, November 17, 2008 NCAA football I've never followed NCAA football much. But I was in a conversation recently about the standings. Wife is a teacher and owner of a Montessori preschool, so I am sure if I don't get it soon I will be in the same or similar situation. Take care and hope you feel better! At least you can look forward to a lot of TV time, with 24 finally coming back on the air! :) Kieran ( 76.90.10.44 ) at 8:50 PM EST Sunday, November 16, 2008 Get your flu shot Gar: We're pretty sure that this flu could have been prevented by the flu shot, because my wife got the shot, and she's been symptom free so far. Sure it's just anecdotal, but usually we both get sick with the same things within days of each other. Given her profession, it was pretty stupid of me not to get the shot ASAP. She probably brings home all sorts of bugs. We also had some friends over when I was just starting to show symptoms, and they are fine, and they had their shots. I always thought I'd had the flu before, but now that I have this, and have read up on it, I know I've never had anything like it before. Anything I thought I had before was just a bad cold. The real flu is just awful. I'm going on six days straight of constant fever, with very little relief from any anti-pyretics or analgesics. I'm a pretty fit healthy person, and this thing has me on my back for most the past 5 days. It's just brutal. BAGMAN ( 75.104.128.37 ) at 6:36 PM EST Sunday, November 16, 2008 Test 123 Test 123 ..... Not as good as Casino Royale but certainly worth a ticket to the movie theater. Gar ( 69.128.158.208 ) at 11:26 AM EST Saturday, November 15, 2008 Circuit City BF ad Tony C:: Well I hope they stay in business, as it is better for the consumer. Pricing matching etc.. I just got a P&S camera from CC, because they priced match BB and gave another 10%, but I am not sure if I am going to keep the camera because of there situation and I been having some issues with dust Orbs in the picture which is usually caused by the flash intensity and the flash being too close to the lens. This really makes me mad as I think Canon has the best looking pictures from a P&S that I have seen, but indoor shots suffer from this on certain models. Hence getting back to your comment on return it before they go belly up... Tony C: ( 67.176.199.68 ) at 9:41 AM EST Saturday, November 15, 2008 Circuit City BF ad duh..here's the link: http://bfads.net/Circuit-City Tony C: ( 67.176.199.68 ) at 9:40 AM EST Saturday, November 15, 2008 Circuit City BF ad Here's a link to the CC BF sale stuff. There are some deals, but nothing that's knock out. Maybe the Tosh 32" TV for $450. I was talking to a guy from CC this week. He either believe's or is doing a convincing job of kidding himself that they will be out of Ch11 by March. He said that they got the financing to get them through. I just don't think any retailer is really prepared for what is expected to be the worse holiday season in 26 years. I asked him about gift cards, because people will be afraid to buy them. He said that the court has made gift cards a secured creditor and will honor them first. Great, and where will you be able to spend them? and what merchandise will be in the store? One more interesting tidbit. Guess what the number one redemption is for gift cards at BBY? In other words, what do kids use their gift cards to purchase? iTunes cards. Yep. They spend the card to buy a card. Gar ( 69.128.158.208 ) at 2:39 AM EST Saturday, November 15, 2008 Star Trek CajunMike: What did you think? I saw it tonight... another good Bond flick.. Kieran ( 76.90.10.44 ) at 7:34 PM EST Friday, November 14, 2008 flu shot - I'm curious BAGMAN: 36. I have no idea what kind of flu it is. I don't recall ever having the flu before this. Maybe I did when I was a kid, but don't remember. Regardless, I always get a flu shot because I'm a believer in vaccinations in general. The more people vaccinated against a given strain of flu, the harder it is for that strain to continue on and mutate. My buddy and his wife own a mortgage/realty company and they have seen a drop in the mortgage side, to the point they may have to start letting people go. They are good people, at lunch the other day he said they are thinking about using their 401k so that they don't have to fire people, and possibly try and ride it out. Now I'm scared. cai ( 205.254.147.8 ) at 2:30 PM EST Wednesday, November 5, 2008 Taxes Kieran: Any tax law passed in the remainder of this year will most likely not take effect until next year. Otherwise it will only be effective from the date the law was passed. So, if it was passed on December 1, 2008, then it will only affect income past that date, or it could get into an ex-post facto scenario and it would cause rather messy tax computation problems. This rule mostly applies when there is the possibility of an adverse effect on the taxpayer. If the government decides to give refunds to everyone who was born on February 29, in a year that ends in a 3 and his birth was 13 days past a full moon; they could do that as it will not increase the persons tax liability due to the change. Tax strategies are made taking into account current laws and to change them retroactively creates a lot of headaches for individuals as well as corporations. I think there have been cases where the IRS has demanded additional payments going back years. For the most part those cases have been due to different interpretation of the statute or rules. Call me, i'll get you the $$ you may deserve" Sheesh, nobody has any dignity anymore... . . . My name is Koool Rich and i approve this message.......
CajunMike ( 68.226.208.174 ) at 12:26 AM EST Tuesday, November 4, 2008 New stuff Rich: I have a SVS PC-Ultra which replaced one of the original SVS powered subs. It's been a very good sub but it had some difficulty last week with some parts of the Incredible Hulk. In the new house, I'm likely going to opt for multiple inwall subs. I'm thinking like four Triad InWall subs, bronze or silver. Surprisingly they arent that badly priced. My dealer is also talking about putting subs in the riser underneath the hometheater chairs. My Bio is updated. ;) Rich ( 96.233.39.161 ) at 12:13 AM EST Tuesday, November 4, 2008 New stuff Congrats Mike!! on all your new HT gear and your future new home!! As far as everything sitting in boxes, trust me you're not alone, i can relate to that btw, do you still have that HSU sub? I'm still running my huge Mirage BPS-400 and i love it lol. You'll have to update your bio soon. Congrats!!

I wish the Secrets page would do a shoot out on both up-conversion and Blu-Ray playback soon. Kieran: Looks like my city missed that list this time around. Chris L. ( 71.181.32.77 ) at 6:47 PM EST Monday, November 3, 2008 Circuit City closure list Kieran:Nothing in this area yet. I was looking Tweeter's site and they have a list of all their clearance sales. Problem is, their clearance price is more than most other sources. Chris L. ( 71.181.32.77 ) at 4:39 PM EST Monday, November 3, 2008 Speaker Upgrade Someone told me to check out Axiom (http://www.axiomaudio.com/m22.html) Not sure I know much about them but they look nice. CajunMike ( 68.226.208.174 ) at 2:20 PM EST Monday, November 3, 2008 New stuff Looks like I'm about done until the new house is built and I have to add additional speakers and a front projection system for my dedicated media room. While I wait for the cabinet man to come alter my HT cabinet later this week, I get to look at a new plasma and blu-ray player sitting in boxes in my dining room. :( Pioneer KURO PDP-6020FD Panasonic DMP-BD35K Blu-ray Disc Player Chris L, if you are looking for great speakers with a true furniture look the best two I've seen are Triad (which I bought) and Dali. Real wood veneers. My Triad InRoom LCR Golds are in Red Rosewood with matching pedestals. There's a huge difference between faux wood vinyl finishes and real wood veneer. Obviously speakers with real veneer are more expensive and Triad will do anything you want at a price. You want your wood speakers to match your wood floor or cabinetry, simply send them a sample and they will match. Kieran ( 76.90.10.44 ) at 1:26 AM EST Monday, November 3, 2008 Speaker Upgrade Chris L.: FYI, M&K went out of business a couple years ago, but has been bought up and resurrected as MK Sound. Much of their former product line is intact, along with some new products. You might want to check them out if you like M&K. Tony C ( 67.176.199.68 ) at 8:31 PM EST Sunday, November 2, 2008 Speaker Upgrade Chris L.: can you find a Blu Ray player with a cherry finish? Gasser ( 71.106.227.141 ) at 8:17 PM EST Sunday, November 2, 2008Speaker Upgrade Chris L.: The B&W's are nice, but if you like them, you should take a look and listen to the Tannoy Revolution series. Great sound, nice looking, and reasonable. Tannoy Revolution Chris L. ( 71.181.32.77 ) at 7:20 PM EST Sunday, November 2, 2008 Speaker Upgrade Well...hell has officially frozen over. The wife asked me yesterday if there were any speakers that sounded as good as our current M&Ks but had a nice finish to them, preferably to match the cherry stand that the dlp sits on. She's tired of looking at black boxes in "her" living room. I thought about it for about .5 seconds and started looking online. She really likes the look of the B&W 705s (http://www.bowers-wilkins.com/display.aspx?infid=1096&terid=1107) in rosenut. I'm floored! I could probably sell off the 5 M&Ks to pay for the B&W fronts and center and use my old Cambridge Soundworks bipoles for surrounds until I get the B&W surrounds. Maybe I can talk her into a new Blu-ray player while I'm at it! Joelc ( 70.52.170.190 ) at 7:27 AM EST Sunday, November 2, 2008 Good morning gang...hope that everyone is having a good weekend... If you have a subwoofer and don't need the bass from the Titans, the Atoms have an even sweeter sound. In my bedroom system, I use two pairs of Atoms with two Atlantic Technology 8 inch subs. It' |
