Happy Birthday Simm
Have a great rest of the week. Planning the room is probably more fun than actually building it. Enough guys on here have done it now, that this is a great resource. At least on what not to do. hehehe!!!

Happy Belated Robert
Hope you had a good birthday my friend. And here's to many more.
Tony C ( 67.248.52.237 ) at 9:42 PM EST Monday, October 21, 2002
thanks
simm: Take your time and plan a lot. Sit there and just imagine how you would like it to look.
Then plan some more.
Next find a carpenter to work off hours just to rough in the walls and box out any plumbing, polls or vents you may have.
You can do all the wiring; electrical and HT. It's easy.
You can also do the drywall with a friend. Yeah, you'll make a few mistakes but you'll get the hang of it without too much waist.
Then hire another guy to tape.
You're done.

Samsung 191T Monitor
This is by far one of the best monitors for the money. Games and DVDs look fantastic on it and Text is outstanding. The black level on this unit are amoung the best I have seen. My Apple HD display by far has the best picture I have seen to date on anykind of PC/Apple display but this one comes in a close second and less expensive.

thanks
Thanks for the birthday wishes. The wife and I dropped the kids off at my parents and spent the weekend on the outer banks. Very relaxing.....now I have the rest of the week off to do what I want. I am trying to work up the nerve to attempt a remodel of my basement to create a nice HT room. I have no construction experience but for some reason I have the urge to buy lumber and sheetrock and just go for it.

Whitney Houston's New Album Leaked One Month Early
It's all over the Web: Whitney Houston's new album, Just Whitney... It was leaked in its entirety sometime over the weekend to lots of Web sites and downloading services. It can be burned onto CDs, distributed for free and will likely turn up on street corners before the end of this week.
The record industry, in other words, is about to sink like the Titanic. Houston was paid $100 million by Arista Records last year in a new deal that includes this album.
Interestingly, at the same time, Santana's new album, Shaman, which Arista will release on Tuesday, also seems to be all over the Internet. (Maybe Arista has a problem somewhere in its company with disgruntled employees.)
What a situation though for Houston. Her album is not due to be shipped until Nov. 26, and the version available on the Web may not be the finished one. The Web version offers only 10 tracks plus a bonus remix of "Whatchulookinat." That's a pretty short album any way you look at it.
But what's even more interesting is that the album, which I downloaded last night (thanks to mp3delivery.com), is good -- really good, if you like Whitney Houston's brand of bland admonishments mixed with terrific vocals. There's nothing daring here, nothing that catapults Whitney into the league of Aretha Franklin or Gladys Knight.
The album does have at least three or four potential hit singles, starting with a power ballad called "On My Own," which recalls Houston's signature hit "I Will Always Love You." You won't want to, but I guarantee you'll be singing along with it in the car in traffic very soon.
Also in the plus column are a mid tempo R&B number called "Love That Man," a real Top 40 song called "Dear John Letter," and two duets -- one with Santana called "Tell Me No" and another with her husband Bobby Brown entitled "My Love."
One more track, the catchy "Unashamed," fills out a theme that Houston offers lyrically that she's empowered, independent and ready to take on the world. You might think the lady doth protest too much; Just Whitney... may be the most melodic answer the National Enquirer has ever received.
On the mediocre side, at least upon first listening, are "One of Those Days," "Things You Say" and a turgid remake of the forgettable "You Light Up My Life."
But if you like Whitney Houston, you're going to love Just Whitney... Despite all the rumors and gossip about her health, her drug problems, weight, marriage, etc., Houston's trademark voice sounds as good as ever on the best songs here. They may not be particularly deep tracks, or even well produced (nothing is as good as Wyclef Jean's "My Love Is Your Love"). In fact, all the songs sound a little rushed. And I don't think there's a need for two versions of "Whatchulookinat." But marketed properly with good videos, the bulk of the songs should be hits.
The bigger question though is what happens when an entire album is available for free in a mass form a whole month before its release date. Even if Arista were to pounce this morning on the Web sites with cease and desist orders, one would think the damage was done over the weekend.

I'mmmmmmmm back
Well Orlando was fun, My voice got TORE UP pitching the same presentation for 6hrs to 400+ individuals.
OBservations, IF you are into gaming, Alienware has the best systems on the planet, bar none. HP has a multi-media computer coming out that rocks. One button hot keys on the keypad and computer case. even as proprietary at it may be, it will do very well for those who want that type of computer.
I picked up a ton of new software, including the new Combat Flight simulater 3 from Microshaft which isn't even out yet I think.
Golfing in ORlando was fun, tried a place called Falcon's Fire. A nice course, they do a lot of qualification tournaments on it. However, it's close to overseed time so the course wasn't that green, but still challenging and fun. I passed on the Disney courses this time after I found out the discount I'd get by staying at a Disney hotel, next time. I tried to get on at Bay Hill but was about 1/2 hr late from an open tee time. (next time I've got to remember 2am is not a reasonable time to go to bed if you want to get up early)

Optoma 65"
Tony C: Zenith does have a 65" but it is LCD. I just got through reading a review in SGHT and it did not do so well. I think this new DLP Mustang HD2 chip is a good choice or if LCOS and DILA get off their backsides, maybe we could have more choices. Plasma is starting to close the gap on price also, seams like a lot of big companies are ramping up production and dropping CRT to concentrate on plasma, to free up manufacturing capacity and brings costs down.
I don't understand why more RPTV manufactures have not brought of huge 60" plus screens using this new HD2 chip.

Now I thought these people made cameras or do they really make anything that is trully theirs.
I would think someone else would be makeing the major subassemblies of this RPTV and they are tweaking and putting it together.
What do you think? Is Optoma owned by a larger company? Mabey an electronic giant that makes TV's
I just don't know what to think, this is what I'm looking for but they have no track record with RPTV's

DLP or LCOS RPTV
Curtis: Yeah, I have given a lot of consideration to hanging a projector. A cieling fan is now doing just as you have described hanging on a long pole. I even thought about mounting it to the bottom of the fan, or cutting a whole in the back wall at about eight feet and putting the projector in the attic, if I could through the distance. This is a media room and not a dedicated home theater, smack dab in the middle of the house with the entry foire (sp) on the right and the dinning room on the left. You can straight through hose to the back yard looking in the front door, very open. So the layout of room sucks. If I did put up a screen I would be force to use it for all viewing, no place to retract the screen, it would have to be hard mounted to the wall. So a larger than life RPTV with one of the newer fixed panel displays is the way to go, unless the 60" plasma comes down into the $6000 to $8000 range. Maybe Mitsubishi will put the new HD2 chip in it's 65" DLP RPTV that would be sweet.

DLP or LCOS RPTV
Derb: Since DLP and DiLA and LCOS projectors are so light a vaulted ceiling should not be a problem. Just get, buy or make a longer support pole. I've seen a 6' pole used to drop down from the side of a vaulted ceiling.

DLP or LCOS RPTV
Anyone know of any future large screen 60"+ second generation DLP or LCOS RPTV's coming on the market. So far Zenith D60WLCD and the Sony Grand Wega KF-60XB800 are LCD and lack in black level performance, and the only DLP large enough 65" is the Mitsubishi WD-65000 but does not have the latest chip. A projector is out because of the vaulted cieling and layout of the room. CRT RPTV is out because I don't want to jack with set-up issues.

GET THIS: My cousin bought a Sony 10HT from ABT for only $3,500 and asked them to hold it for him until he was ready to instal it.
Well, that was six months ago. He calls up last week and sure enough, they sold it.
They told him that they only hold thing for 10 days. But he said that they never told him that when he bought it or when he asked that they hold it or when he called to inquire about it a month ago. Nor does it say anything on the paper work or the reciept he has for the 25% deposit.
I don't think that ABT will be able to find another 10HT out there. And he swears he will not may more for an upgrade.
It will be fun to see how this one will work out.

My office staff just got squeezed but not cuts, they have given us 1 month to get sales up or I have to cut 1 person. I lost 2 people last go round. This sucks since my average work force in the office is 6 years, has been pretty stable. I hate my job when it comes to this kind of crap.

Tony C: I did buy it but didn't unwrap it yet. So I shouldn't have a problem returning it. I like Cage, but in 8mm he was bad, and now I hear he is bad in this movie too. Maybe I will rent it tonight and take it back to BB.

Gar: I used to have a Hi8 but never Digital8. The reason for going to the DV side was because I have had access to a Canon XL1 and GL1 for several years. The ZR50 gets used mostly as a slave for recording finished projects.

Windtalkers?
Gar: I watched it the other night and I will not buy it.
It's a John Woo film so I kind of expected it to be over the top, but it wasn't.
The movie has some good action in it, but too Hollywoodish. The war scenes in We Were Soldiers was way better.
The story line had the typical bigotry from of movie featuring that time period with the obvious lesson for all to bask in.
I really wasn't impressed.
Nor was I impressed with Nick Cage's performance. However I did like Christian Slater.
Rent, don't buy.

I have a class today on running a overhead crane. As a Trades supervisor I have to take all the H&S classes. Today I have a test in the morning, about 1 hour. Then we have to flip a 10 ton die over and move it. That will take about 1 hour. The class will last from 7 to about 1 this afternoon. It does make for a long lunch.

Yes Bill ,the Picture looks great !! THanks a million. Watched a few movies and some HD programming and must say never looked better. I want to set up a HTPC now. I'm glad you enjoyed yourself. I had a lot of fun, disappointed more didn't show up,(and gave those who said they were some grief), but that's CEDIA, all about taking clients out on the expense account. I was glad you and John could come by and have some fun. Curtis: Curtis, thanks for the heads up. You talked me into a Digital 8 years ago and it's been a good camera, I have the TR7000 no LCD but a colored viewfinder, I guess that saves the battery life. I thought you had a digital 8? I know you bought the ZR-50 and was wondering why you switched if you did. Just from a functioning purpose the ZR45 or 50 look great. Also, I think you get a digital camera built in, although not all that great, but still another good feature.

Canon/ Sony CC's
Gar: ~$500 for a ZR50 is a great price. For consumer applications there really isn't much difference between formats. Both produce very clean images & audio and are a breeze to do non linear editing with. The Sony design allows playback of Hi8 tapes, so if you have a bunch of those laying around you may want to stick w/ it. The 22x optical zoom on the ZR50 is a great lens - remember to use a tripod if you don't want to get motion sickness.
Joe: So how did she like the ZR45? My ex was never quite sure if electronics gifts were for her or for me! I'm sure you'll both love it.

The Transporter
I just saw this movie today, and was disappointed. I mean, I had a lot of fun watching it, but I was expecting more from Luc Besson, given what he's done in the past. La Femme Nikita and The Professional are two of my all time favorite films. The action in this film was great, but the story lacked, IMO. I was really hoping for an intelligent thriller like Nikita, Professional or Ronin but instead it seemed more to me like a Jackie Chan movie that takes place in France, and has a white hero. It started out SO WELL, too... But then just became another karate movie... Overall I liked it, though... the stunts and fighting were great fun, and the opening scene is AWESOME... but I guess I was just expecting more from Besson.

Shootings
Thanks for humoring me, guys. :)
Scott: Thanks for the info. While you do know more about guns than I, your physics statements made me think:First off is wind drag. a .22 bullet has a fairly small drag coefficient (say, compared to a 9mm)...
I think you mean, smaller frontal area, right? Drag Coefficient is a unitless parameter, and depends on the shape of the object... theoretically, a car could have a smaller drag coefficient than a bullet... say if the bullet was flying backwards, or was a pellet-style BB, etc. You could be correct that a .22 has a smaller Cd than a 9mm bullet, but I think you were refering to area, as in so many square inches, right?
Also, it has a given weight (also smaller than a 9mm bullet, given average bullet sizes)... Back to the physics bit... the same energy will get a lighter object moving faster, and a smaller object will move farther before slowing down due to wind drag.
Not necessarily. Both Momentum and aerodynamic drag go as velocity squared, and aero drag is directly proportional to frontal area times Cd, whereas momentum is directly proportional to mass.
DF = 0.5*A*Cd*p*v^2 (p=air density)
M = 0.5*m*v^2
So, if the larger round had a sufficiently smaller Cd, and enough momentum, it could go further than the lighter round. For example, take a ping-pong ball, and a billiard ball. The billiard ball is heavier AND bigger, but which one can you throw further, assuming you put the same amount of force into each throw?
I'm not saying you're wrong in this specific case, (a .22 may indeed travel further than a 9mm given the same charge) just that as a general statement, it wasn't accurate. You know me... I can't resist a physics discussion... :^)

Kieran: The only thing in common betwen a .22rimfire and a military .223 is approx diameter. The .22 is a round nose fairly small bullet while a 223 is pointed, has a boat tail design and has 4 times the amount of lead . A .22 is about .75 inches long while a .223 is 2.25. In a .22 the case is the same diameter its whole length, a .223 expands to approx .380 and has 8 times the powder. The powder is also a much hotter mix in a .223.
If we switch to a .22 centerfire the .223 case is still larger and contains more powder and the bullit design is different. It is pretty easy to tell the difference between them. If you are asking if you can tell the difference by the size of the hole in a target the answer is no.

Kieran: ahh, missed one question. There are a few ways to tell the cartridge that was fired. The most obvious would be to find a shell case where the gun was fired. If the sniper is really good, he won't leave it though. Another way is to use ballistics to determine the velocity of the bullet when it hit whatever it hit. I imagine using that and also being able to determine bullet size would make it easy to determine the cartridge.
Scott "popcorn" ( 209.184.8.141 ) at 2:46 AM EST Wednesday, October 16, 2002
Shootings
Kieran: Well, first off, there is no "set in stone" rule for how powerful a cartridge is. (at least not to my knowledge)... Yes, a .223 uses a .22 caliber bullet, but it has like (guessing here) four times the powder behind it. If you remember your physics, there are a number of things that cause a .223 to be more powerful. First off is wind drag. a .22 bullet has a fairly small drag coefficient (say, compared to a 9mm)... Also, it has a given weight (also smaller than a 9mm bullet, given average bullet sizes)... Back to the physics bit... the same energy will get a lighter object moving faster, and a smaller object will move farther before slowing down due to wind drag.
Back to the whole size bit... You just have to be versed in the various cartridges. :)

Compared to some of you guys here, I'm clueless about guns, although amazingly I know more than many people. But, just a question: Gun calibers and what they mean/imply is one aspect I know very little about. A .223 caliber... isn't that just barely larger than the tiny .22 cal kid-rifles I used to shoot tin cans with at Boy Scout camp? Why is it so much more powerful? I mean, obviously it has to have more juice behind it, but I'm just wondering how/why just naming a caliber, like .223 automatically implies to a gun-knowing person that it is very powerful? For example, isn't a military M-16 rifle essentially a .22 cal bullet? So, if I say I shot a target with a .22, how do you know whether I was using a K-Mart special or an M-16? (exageration: I know K-Mart no longer sells guns... at least the one near me doesn't).
And yes, I'm aware of the irony of me asking for info on this stuff, based on previous "discussions" on this board. :-)

Well as i mentioned. I was kind of oblivious the day this all started. I just went about my normal day. Tech call. Meeting with reps... etc. It was a little while before I happened past leisure World and noticed the large whole in the window.
Riffle bullet... That was about all I could tell from 50 yards while in the passenger seat of a moving car. Oddly people were eating right on the other side of that window. The tables were not full but it struck me as odd that they were eating right there.
As for talent. Yeah some people are born with a talent for firing weapons. My father was a naval officer and thou he never held a gun in his life before, scored perfectly in training. Growing up I attending a summer camp where archery and air rifle were taught at age 5 and up. "A and A", as we called it, was one of the daily activities at camp. After all the basic awards of Marksman, ProMarksman, Sharpshooter (Bars) then you go for Expert. Although I was awarded Expert, I don't hunt or shoot at things. I have not been to a range in years.
I can tell you that people that shoot regurly can make these shots. Not easily, but they are doable. And the guy has talent too. I agree with AVB, this guy is patient and methodical. The MC Police at my gym all seem strung out and very frustrated. They are really working hard and responding to every false... "White Van" call. They are starting to wonder if the fan thing is a decoy or coinsidence.
You have to be camped out to make these shots. They are not snap shots and done at distance. Look for your decoy or scapegoat then take the shot. There are plenty of targets in the places chosen.
The guys I talked to today said... not likly this perp will make it to a station. Most likly conclusion is that he will fall to an angry mob. We can only hope that is sooner rather than later.

ON SNIPER BEAT: Geraldo Rivera Posing For Pictures With Hooters Girls, Autographs Buttocks
Tue Oct 15 2002 10:39:47 ET
By MICHAEL ZITZ
The Free Lance-Star
The larger-than-life Fox News reporter swooped into Fredericksburg and spent the weekend to file reports following Friday's sniper shooting at the Four-Mile Fork Exxon.
He arrived at the scene at midday Friday, strutting around in a black leather jacket and blue jeans.
By 6 p.m. on the day of the shooting, Rivera was autographing the seats of Fredericksburg Hooters waitresses' skimpy orange shorts--while the women were in them.
The Hooters restaurant is located only about 50 yards away from the crime scene.
"He was posing for pictures with the Hooters Girls and signing their ," said Geoff Leach, a Caroline County resident who was at the restaurant late Friday afternoon.
"I thought it was pretty tasteless, considering the timing and the proximity to the scene of the killing," Leach said. "It was a circus atmosphere."
A spokesman for Fox News Channel in New York said the Hooters autograph session was only part of a wider Rivera autograph spree that was perfectly harmless.

cai: While it is true a .223 tumbles more upon entry then a .308 would it also has lees shock the further out you go. You will never see a sniper rifle in such a small caliber. The "standard" is a modified Remington 700 but there is a fair amount of lee-way allowed. There are also big caliber special use sniper weapons that can do head shots at 2000 yards under the right conditions.
That being said, someone with training and inclination can hit a pie plate (9") all day long at 500 yards if they have their weapon dialed in, know the weather (crosswinds, how much, how fast etc) and has consistant ammo. Lots of snipers if not all load their own ammo so they know it will fire exactly the same every time.
This guy is prior military, probably Marine but maybe Army Ranger or SF is white, 30-45 years old, divorced and has had good employment. The reason being is he is thoughtful, well planned, careful, and exacting. You aren't an unemployed bum with that skill set. JMHO.

AVB: I would also like to have your take on this situation. When I speak of 300 yards, I am going from my range and hunting experiences. It is not easy to make a kill hit at those distances, unless you are a very good shot. Snipers and other dedicated shooters with extensive experience can do it most of the time. Again, practice does improve the aim, but one must have a certain amount of innate ability. To make an analogy, no matter how hard he tries, Curtis will never play tennis like Martina Hingis. Strike two, he doesn't look like her either.
It is also a fact that the ammunition being used causes extensive damage when it enters the body. It ricochets from the bones and goes on destroying tissue. I would surmise that unless this kind of bullet goes cleanly through the body, if it hits your torso, it may very well be a kill shot.

Shootings
Wild Bill: Being pretty close to "expert" on this subject it is pretty hard to hit things at 500 yards or more with accuracy, especially if you are talking kill shtos. All Marines are required to qualify at 500 yards and most never get inside the bullseye but they do hit the target. This is after a week of dry training and a week of shooting...not exactly minimal. The Quantico sniper school takes quite a bit longer :).
JOe ( 198.208.223.35 ) at 11:17 AM EST Tuesday, October 15, 2002
Sniper
Well I think it's 2 teams working. The suppose white van or truck is nothing but a decoy. It's meant for people to catch a glispm of. The other team is the shooter. HE must be shoting from someplace high, to have a clean shot.
The thought of shooting out of a truck is possible but the noise would be very loud. Even if the rifle had a can on it. The inside of the truck would have to be insulated to deaden the nosie and that would draw alot of attention, if they got pulled over.
500 yards is a decent shoot. Still a .223 is a very flat shooting round.

cai: Even if he is deranged, this is an act of terror. The only criteria to be a victim seems to be life. Unlike a serial killer he doesn't prey on blonds, moms, prostitutes, gays, etc. Every human is a potential target.
BTW, from what I've heard from the "experts", with a minimal amount of training it's not difficult to hit a target from 500 yards or more with great success.

On the sports front
Well the Giants did it - another nail-biting drama that went to 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th inning. What a tremendous feeling to have your team get into the World Series after so many discouraging/almost seasons. It's not enough just to get there ... we want the whole thing. You east coasters aree going to miss a great WS.
The 49ers even beat Mike Holmgren at his house tonight.

Wild Bill: It is downright incredible that someone would be shooting people for sheer pleasure. If this is not a terrorist action, it is then the workings of a very deranged person, who is most probably taking advantage of the terror connection. I have no doubt that the person will be caught, the question is how many more people will need to die before this happens.
Today I was at Microcenter, by the Vienna Metro, and the thought came through my mind when I was coming to the parking lot, as to where would I hide if I were a shooter. I also noticed that it is a good 200 or 300 yards, at least, each way around the parking lot. That would not be an easy shot.
Wild Bill ( 12.92.126.15 ) at 10:50 PM EST Monday, October 14, 2002
Another shooting occured a little while ago. This time it was at a Home Depot in Fairfax County. CAI, JohnO and I live in Fairfax County. The sniper has now shot people in Montgomery County, Prince Georges County, Prince William County, Spotsylvania County and Fairfax County. He seems to be working his way around the Beltway. My offices are in Loudoun County and it would seem that is likely as a future target area. This is downright scary.

The PS2 you can pick up an adapter kit that allows a Broadband or regular internet connection. You can find it at Best Buy for around $39 bucks. If you get that pick up the Game SOCOM or Madan 2003. SOCOM comes with a headset that you connect to a USB port on the PS2 this allows for communication during a Game, sometimes it's as clear as talking on the phone, but not always.

Giants v. Angels
Robert: They did the same thing in the 6th - walked Bonds when the Cards were up by two runs. Kent had walked ahead of him. JT Snow hit the center field wall to score two runs. The only team who pitches to Bonds is Colorado, and they have paid dearly many times. If SF wins 1 of the next 3 games they're in. St. Louis is a very good team and won't make it easy. I'm guessing that plenty of people on the west coast will watch an all CA WS.
Robert ( 12.218.0.16 ) at 11:28 AM EST Monday, October 14, 2002
Giants v. Angels
The cards chickened out and walked Bonds and Santiago made them pay to pitch around. I'm no major league manager, but don't teams put a solid hittere BEHIND somebody like Bonds/MCGuire/Sosa just for this very case of a two run potential at bat. I'd pitch to Barry with no one on. It's going to be Giants V Angels. Storybook series to be sure. I'm guessing no one from the East coast will be watching.

well actually it was AVB who suggested I head on over here and become a member. Well I post under the same name over at HTF and AVS. At the latter site you'll likely see my posts edited for editorial content. I thought at one time may it was because the moderator thought I had tourettes but it seems he just doesn't like me asking questions. Well actually if the question is prefaced by sufficient ass-kissing and enough political correctness, I think it's ok. Anyways, here I am and maybe I'll chime in from time to time with something relevant.

We have two options... one where we go with another 30 year loan where the rate is 1/2 percent higher and the monthly drops $60 (but we get the taxes applied to the loan so we get a lump back that pyas off my car, meaning $375 a month off my bills plus that $60), the other a 15 year option which means we get a 1/2 percent lower rate, the month mortgage goes up $183 a month, but of course we pay off the loan in 15 years and save something like $225k over the life of the loan. Option B sure sounds so much better, but the ultimate goal is to reduce our monthly bills and make it possible to do things again (vacations, new furniture , maybe even ht upggardes). And maybe in a few years when both girls are well into school we can have Laurie work and consider a 15 year loan refi. Amazing what a 15 year loan does...

Best of luck and many little Vaders

Good Morning
Hi all, no I'm not dead, not yet anyhow. I have had my house completly turned up side down and I'm just starting to get it back together.
With work keeping me tied down it is taking three times as long to get back to normal. I still have my office torn apart and have set up the computer on the kitchen counter.
I read back and see everyone had a good time at the last Houston meet.
Sorry I could not make it, but the end results are getting better. New masterbath, new tile kitchen and baths, new carpet, new office furniture, yet to arrive.
In the audio/home theater department. New Martin-Logan Descent Sub, and 20 feet of Coral AudioQuest to hook it up. I think I have it dialed in and I likes it alot.
Now I just need some furniture to sit on, I gave my couch and papasan chair to my nephew, he's going to school in Texas. So I'm not quite through spending money yet.
And Rick I just sent in my papers last week, locked in at 5.5%
Only deal was I had to roll my escrow into the old loan, basically making a $2500 lump payment. And now I have to build back up the Escrow account with new laon, so I have to come up with about 3 grand for the new escrow and closing costs. But this with save me 2.25% and take me to a 15 year note.

Anyone else notice how many disasters and incidents our members are somehow involved in? In the past week, cai has been at one of the sites the sniper has been attacking, and Gar's immediate family is involved in that big pileup out of Chicago. (...and if I remember correctly, one of us was VERY close to the World Trade Centers when they were attacked)
VERY scary. I'm soooo glad nobody has been hurt so far.

Gar: We've had accidents that bad and worse in the Central Valley of California, where the fog can get thick as mud. It is very scary driving down I-5 or CA-99 in the early morning some times... Also dust storms kick up out there, just as bad.
Again, glad your Dad is alright... sounds like he did a great job trying to help. You should be proud.

Gar: wow! I heard about that on the news this afternoon... I even thought of you when I heard it... but for some reason, I thought you weren't in that area... I guess your dad was though!!! DAMN. Glad to hear he's okay. What a crazy thing to live through.

What a Day!!!!!
Got a call from my Mom today and she was frantic! Said my dad was involved in this pile up that made national news. He was on his way from Door County Wis to Chicago on business and left as usual. Was on a strech of highway that got pretty bad with this fog and the next thing he knows he sees red Semi lights right in front of him, so he steers his Dodge Durango off the road into a ditch. He gets out of his car to see what the hell happened and he hears screams and sees flames shooting into the air, he is stairing in disbelief. As he is stand on the side of the highway witnessing this he hears another screeching sound and looks to his right and sees another Semi Jacknifing infront of him and coming toward him at a very fast rate he starts runnning way as fast as he can and the truck over-turns right in behind him. He and another trucker pull one of the truckers free from the wreckage and one other man from the wreckage and the heat got to intense to go any further..... WOW!!!!!!! This one hit very close to home. Just very glad my dad still knows how to drive well!!

In HT mag, there is an ad for a Progresive scan DVD player with Hard Disc Drive.
The ad says that there is no monthly fee like other PVRs.
It can record up to 30 hours of TV.

Refinancing
We are looking at refinancing... the rates are super low right now. Unfortunately, the pricipal and interest part of our loan is pretty low (thanks to moving from CA to TX) but the taxes (escrow) are what's killing us (welcome to The Woodlands TX). What we are looking at is "pre-paying taxes having that then come back to us, and then using that money to pay off my car loan (2 yrs, 3 months at $376 per mon). The refi gets only $60 a mon or so savings, but getting the car payment is the big assist.
Anyone do anything like this? Anything I should be leery of? Thanks in advance (and no, it doesn't get me an upgrade in HT :-(

AVS classifieds?
AVB: Dumb idea if you ask me - at least if they plan on selling anything or attracting any eyeballs. Perhaps eBay should start charging everyone to brouse? That would go over big. The hosting service deserves to make money, but put the expense on the sellers ... I know, I know - the buyers end up paying for it. Still, there won't be any buyers if they must pay to see what products are available.
Even when you do pay for a year of service they allow this in terms of what you can list for sale ..."And if you maybe have 1 or 2 items to sell...that is fine to." Makes you wonder what happens if (god firbid) you list 3 or 4 items.

Spleen: I just took my DV-05 out of the system last month when I put in the SDI modded Toshiba 9200. I can't comment about "sparkle" but it was as good as my Parasound CDC-1000 Transport and DAC1100. It was a $1K list player when it came out and still does a great job if you run any video processor as they can't use progressive signals. If you need to know anything more just drop me a line.

Hot Damn
Op-amps aren't necessarily bad-sounding devices, in fact, many of the newer ones sound excellent. I replaced the op-amps in one of my dacs with Burr Brown OPA-627Bs, which cost a whopping $24 each.... a major improvement in sound.
If Marantz is using discrete circuitry to replace op-amps it must be incredibly complex.... they would need audiophile-grade components to maintain transparency.
I heard a Marantz CD player with HDAM circuitry a couple of years ago... I can't recall the model number, but I remember it being a very good-sounding piece of gear.

Canon DV
Joe: 18x vs. 22x optical zoom and no media card on the 40. Other diffs are night mode and the inclusion of A to D video converter built into the ZR50. Lots of other little things too.
I'm eyeing a GL2 or an XL-1 and may need to sell my ZR50 (<6 months old) with an extra battery - know anyone who might be interested? Now I know how Gar feels! ;-)

Hot Damn
Joe: From the Marantz website:
HDAM - Hyper dynamic Amplifier Modules: Discrete circuitry to replace IC op-amps with low-noise independent components and short signal paths. They
preserve the dynamic structure of music so that even vulnerable high frequencies are translated accurately. The result is an effortlessly dynamic sound that's both expressive and detailed.

I am looking at the 47a and the Marantz DVD-8300. There is a local here that carries booth. They also carry Anthem so I can try them though the same Pre/Pro I have.
If I cannot hear a differance I will give the nod to Pioneer. I have had my currrent DVD LD for 5 years and is still works fine. That says something about build quality.
I am hoping to slid out in the next 2 weeks and do a demo. I have 6 DVD A titles to take along and try, including the Doors L.A Women. I have to pick up a couple SACD titles to take with me.
The local store always has a sale around this time of year. We got our bonus announcement today, so it's time to shop. It would be nice to have bought a new display to go with a new DVD V A player...but to many people are buying Hondas :)
Gasgeek ( 4.21.3.3 ) at 3:37 PM EST Friday, October 11, 2002
Spleen: You should check out the new Marantz 8300. Basically a 47A with Marantz sound upgrades. HDAM's on all channels, etc. According to Brian, many of the high end companies were using the 8300 for a display device at CEDIA. He was excited about the new Marantz 2nd generation DLP, but was really raving about the JVC D/ILA.

Can anyone please comment on the DV-05's sound? I read that it was a bit closed-in sounding and lacking air and sparkle.
I've got a chance to trade for one with a guy online but I've never heard one.

Gasgeek: All I know is those 192/24 dacs really make a huge difference in sound quality, even on plain old cds.....
I only heard the DV-45, no video.... the demo was "LA Woman" by The Doors in DVD-A surround ... awesome demo! I did see the 47i on a 65 in Sony RPTV and thought it looked great, but I was hoping to see it with the Sharp or Marantz DLPs.... I'm going back next week for another demo.
Got to admit, the new crop of DVD players are pretty amazing!

Spleen: 192/24 and HDAMfor the front and 24/96 for the rest. I don't know for sure, but I think they're the high end Crystal DACs. Didn't Crystal buy Burr-Brown awhile back? Anyway. Bitch weighs 29 pounds. Sound is completely involving and intricate now. Great picture too.
Here's a link to about the only review I've been able to find.

What did you think of the 45A's pq? I've looked at it quite a bit on a Pioneer Plasma and it's pretty rough compared to the Arcam and the Marantz 12S1, 8300 and 47Ai I've seen on the Marantz 50" Plasma. Of course it's about $500 compared to a lot more for the others.
Spleen ( 12.83.72.175 ) at 2:25 PM EST Friday, October 11, 2002

I know progressive looks better on the big screen, what I want to know is if 3:2 pull down provides any benefit on a non-lined doubled TV.
