A blind man enters a Ladies' Bar by mistake. He finds his way to a bar
stool and orders a drink. After sitting there for a while, he yells to
the bartender, "Hey, you wanna hear a blonde joke?"
The bar immediately falls absolutely quiet. In a very deep, husky voice,
the woman next to him says, "Before you tell that joke, sir, you should
know five things ...
#1 - The bartender is a blonde girl.
#2 - The bouncer is a blonde gal.
#3 - I'm a 6-foot tall, 200-pound blonde woman with a black belt in
karate.
#4 - The woman sitting next to me is blonde and is a professional
weightlifter.
#5 - The lady to your right is a blonde and is a professional
wrestler.
"Now think about it seriously, Mister. Do you still wanna tell that
joke?"
The blind man thinks for a second, shakes his head and declares,
"Nah....not if I'm gonna have to explain it five times."

EAD Ovation +
Duane: Beautiful unit, congratulations. Better keep a Costco-sized box of Q-Tips handy if it's making the old ears all liguidy.
Caan;t remember if I told you I picked up a Parasound AVC-2500 recently. I now seem to own a whole new music library/ movie audio. Natural, clear and great soundstage are words that come to mind. My Velo is behaving far more smoothly with it for who cares what reason/s. Tony C picked up my former Sony TA-E9000ES for his cousin ... nice to keep the good stuff in the family.

Gasser: Well,I finally bit the bullet and picked up the Ovation.I had been looking for about 8-9 months and finally found one.Everything was on a whim.Never heard one, etc. but figured if I didn't like it,could probably seel it,since the Citation is still here. The Citation is now boxed.I have never heard anything this good in my experience. The sonic qualities far outwiegh it's lack of inputs.I thought the Citation was clean....The expansive sound just blows these old ears away. The term liquid comes to mind.Hell, you've heard them..I was afraid it wouldn't mate well with the Krells.Wrong again.Anyway,I just thought you might want to know that you set me in motion for this and I have to thank you for it.

Winston aka The Spleen: Have heard rumors of the
Marantz DLP being great yet haven't seen one yet. My Marantz dealer will shave a bit off the price. I asked him if he were a consumer and could get the Sharp new in box from an authorized source for $6K, what would he do.
He stared at me and only said "duh - go for the Sharp, you idiot!"
Gar ( 208.166.200.213 ) at 3:12 PM EST Saturday, May 4, 2002
Winston aka The Spleen: Ah, some local dealers are good, and some online places are good. kpd friend owns a place and he gives good online prices and knows what he is doing. So if I go with a new DLP unit down the road I will buy from him again. I believe he can get the Sharp and the Marantz. Also the new LOCUS from Hitachi is supposed to be damn good.
Winston aka The Spleen ( 12.83.71.184 ) at 3:01 PM EST Saturday, May 4, 2002
Gar: Most local AV dealers in my area are always willing to deal to some degree, but if you mention online prices they completely freak out. "You can't get support after the sale online." But most of them are completely clueless about setup. When I first saw the Sharp 9000U, all of the setting were "factory zero" - not even an attempt to set brightness or contrast - and there was a big blob of schmutz on the lens, so one corner of the picture was fuzzy. So I should pay more to deal with morons?

DierTivo & iScan bugs solved
Turns out the GF hit the slider switch on the side on the Tivo remote "Tivo/TV". All works fine now though it did totally lockup from the front panel controls too, required a reboot. All shows were recorded/saved.
The idiots at Silicon Image never have returned my service calls and emails re my dead iScan Plus. I looked at the power supply box and it's partially melted! Early adoptors will recall this was a big problem with the initial runs. My dealer is getting a replacement AC supply for $10.

Recording CDs
Been having lots of fun duping CDs lately. Here's a quick report for anyone interested in picking up a CD burner.
First, tried duping various CDs using a Pioneer Elite CLD-97 as transport with an el-cheapo Canare coaxial digital cable. Duped CDs sounded just okay, certainly better than any tape deck I have heard but still a bit muddy and unfocused.
After trying several configurations, settled on the following (Caution - geek alert): Audio Alchemy DDS-Pro as transport, connected via Kimber Orchid AES-EBU digital cable into Genesis DIgital Lens. Signal is clocked into RAM (display indicated Zero PPM Error) and then dithered from 16 to 20 bits and fed into Elite CD burner. Once the disc is burned, I replay it on the DDS-Pro but feed the signal to an Alchemy DTI-Pro32 with 20 bit resolution enhancement instead of the Lens. From there the signal runs to a Camelot Uther again (all connection are I2s) and with the Uther's dither setting "on".
You may find this hard to believe but the duped disc sounds far superior to the original using this setup. Not just a little better but a LOT better, and the improvement is instant and obvious even to non-audiophiles. So how can you improve on an original? CDs are mastered on high speed duplicating machines that are prone to jitter. When you reclock the bitstream to RAM and output it in real time you greatly eliminate jitter errors. Resolution enhancement helps smooth the output for further sonic improvements. Simple when you think about it, but pretty amazing when you hear the results. The cost is about 50 cents a disk to dupe and there are no downsides that I've been able to hear in almost 10 days of experimenting.

Joelc:: The planets are having a tough time aligning properly for this to go through. My Acura dealer gave me a firm price for my 02 Type S over the phone, subject to simply seeing the car. I drive it over and after he looks up what I paid for it when new, decides to lower his offer by $7K! "Oh we'll have to do a full, expensive reconditiong" says the asswipe. BS. The car was recently detailed and in perfect shape.
The delta between his 1st & 2nd price is more than a new Sharp 9000U runs! I'll have no problem getting full value by selling it myself to a private party. Time is the enemy. The 850i seller has another buyer flying up from San Diego with a cashiers check on Tuesday. I placed a local newspaper ad yesterday that was set to begin running today. I get a call this morning from the paper saying "Due to an entry error on our part, your ad will not start until Tuesday.
God doesn't seem to want me to get this car. I'm not stressing over it as I have 2 backup cars ID'd ... not nearly as nice yet great cars that will leave me with ~$10K in my pocket.

Tony C: Ditto... I used to read the comics when I was a kid, and very true to the story, except his webbing. In the comic book he actually makes them, from what I remember. But a very very good flick all around, I thought William Defoe was awesome as the Green Goblin. Good story line and your right a sequil will be on its way.

Anyone catching Spiderman this weekend?
JJ: Just came back from Spiderman. I took two really big fans Son 1 and Son 3.
Actually, there is no bigger fan than Son 1.
When he was little we used to watch Spiderman together and sing the theme song. When he went to kindergarten, his mother had to call the teacher.
"You keep sending my son home with the wrong papers. They all say PETER!"
"No Mrs. C, that's your son's work. He's Peter Parker."
You get the picture. All his life he collected Spiderman comics and art.
Tonight he wore the cool Spiderman silk shirt I bought him for Christmas.
The movie? Great action, great graphics, great sound. Visually stunning.
My son was very impressed with how well they kept to the original story lines. Willem Defoe was incredible and the kid who plays his son looks like James Dean. The sequil should be just as good.

Tony C: Doh!
here's the story!
Have to share… a little long but worth read,, and a TRUE STORY!!!!
Last night we had 2 bands in town, a brand new band named Maroon 5 and the British Goth-Gospel band Spiritualized (a fairly popular underground type alternative band for the musically challenged).. Maroon 5 is this young cool band, very outgoing group of guys. We went to see them 1st at a place called the Fine Line in Minneapolis. Like I said, very outgoing group of guys, so after they were done they wanted to hang out and have a few beers. As it turns out Spiritualized was in town, and they all wanted to see that group, so we walk down the street to 1st Ave. (that’s a nightclub up here) to check out the other show…
Personally, I’m not the biggest Spiritualized fan in the world, I just don’t really quite get it.. (they are kind of out there) BUT, my co-worker Randy is a real big fan, and the guys in Maroon 5 were digging the show. I was kind of hanging out at the bar wishing I could go home, but instead hung out at the bar drinking the night away with another co-worker. Before the show, Randy had pre-arranged a Spiritualized backstage meet & greet, which more or less meant that we were going to be at 1st Ave. for much longer than I wanted to be there.
So, the show ends, we go backstage to meet Spiritualized (me, two co-workers, & Maroon 5) – It’s about 2am… Ready to Go to BED!!! Randy, Kelly, and I are having an interesting conversation with Jason. (the singer and founder of Spiritualized) Apparently I’m the only one in the room by this time to NOT realize that Kids in the Hall member and News Radio star Dave Foley is in the closet sized backroom with us. One moment I turn around to tell Randy that, “Dave Foley is back Here!!” Randy says, “I KNOW.” When I turned back around to say Hi to Dave Foley, OUT OF NOWHERE, this Soccer Meathead guitar tech for Spiritualized grabs Dave Foley by the throat, almost over the top of me.. Afraid this might be some Kids In The Hall comedy sketch that I wasn’t aware of, (I always enjoy a good prank) I didn’t know what to think at first. But, as I’m staring into the sparsely Toothed Soccer Hooligan’s mouth, I realize that he is REALLY trying to kick Dave Foley’s Ass… I make an attempt to grab the guitar techs shirt to hold him back, while Randy was trying to pull Dave Foley away from the hooligan’s clenching fists of rage. Moment’s later, the guitar tech has Dave Foley on the ground, laying on top of Randy now, who has managed to get himself UNDER the maylay.. Managing to get the tech’s hand’s away from Dave Foley’s neck, one of the tech’s boots found it’s way to Dave Foley’s face leaving a heavy stream of blood on his face.
The tour manager gets into the mix now screaming, “Get that bloody wanker out of here!!” while people are dragging Dave Foley from the backstage area. 1st Ave. security guards are yelling “Don’t beat him up he’s a Movie Star!!” While trying to gain his balance, Dave Foley brushes up against a set-time list that was taped to the wall in the backstage area leaving a bloody reminder of the event.
The fight had ended, and we tried to figure out what the hell just happened… We were all standing there with our mouths open, realizing that we just saw someone famous get their ass kicked!! COOL!!! We all decided to get the hell out of Dodge, but not before I walked over to the bloodstained set-list and ripped off the wall for my scrap book….
Anyone feel like cloning Dave Foley???

I'm really bored and I just want to get out of here. Just thought I'd let you guys read something I thought amusing.
While I was in NYC, I got a call from one of my reps in Minneapolis.
He begins to tell me this story. Understand that Spiritualized is one of my acts and I've had my own colorful stories in the past. But none as funny as this one. And a very cool group as well. I'm going to kill him for the "musically challenged" line.
I told him to write it down because it's too good to loose and if you don't it will be blown way out of proportion. Here it is...
>
There's always a better show going on back stage.
Someday I'll tell you the story of how my wife really pissed off David Crosby. I'm still embarassed.
But my favorite back stage stories come from Van Halen. Those guys knew how to party.

Chris L.: Turks and Cacaois (sp?), Barbados, Fiji or Bora Bora (that's where I honeymooned), Bermuda. All great spots. Or jsut take a cruise. They can't be beat for value and if you take a 10 dayer you get 5 ports and your only on each island for a day. If you don't like the island there's another one to see in a day or so.

YAAWWWNNNN.... 'morning
Ugh. I had an MRI this morning at 5:30am. That's the earliest I've gotten up since I was training seriously (a few years now...)
One Starbucks frappicino, please!

JJ: I registered with fandango to receive early ticket purchase notification. So I'll keep an eye on them one week out. The Cinemark down the street from me is one of the "digital" theaters so that is my theater of choice.
JJ ( 209.208.201.146 ) at 10:06 AM EST Friday, May 3, 2002
BC: I did it on the phone. I'd heard up till yesterday that some theaters were looking at 10am or 10:30. Then this morning, I heard some at 8am. I'm in work at 8 (I was in a little early this morning) so started calling my favorite theater. at 8 tickets not avail. at about 8:10 "If you know the name of the the movie you'd like to see, press '1' now." pressing 1. "Please press the first 3 letters of the movie name. for Q..." *7 *8 *2 "if the movie you want to see is 'Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones' press 1 now." *1 "for 12:30 pm press 1 now. for 3:45pm press 2 now. for 7:30pm press 4 now" *1 how many adult tickets would you like to purchase?" *8 "how many child tickets would you like to purchase ?" *0 How many senior citizen tickets would you like to purchase?" ohh my grandfather qualifies! *1. etc etc
This was an AMC theater. THX Cert I'm guessing (they have 2) I saw TPM here Stadium seating etc.
Fandango only goes 1 week out. Moviefone said tickets not available online
After reading Ron's review at HTF, this is going to be a long 2 weeks wait
good Luck

Attack of the Clones
This sounds promising. Part of one of the first reviews from HTF:
Final Thoughts
I so much wanted the title of this review to be called George Lucas Redeemed. I never thought I would be saying
this, but it is quite obvious that Lucas has not lost his touch. Attack Of The Clonesis the most immense science
fiction project ever brought to the screen. There are so many moments that your jaw just drops to the floor. The final
30 minutes of film hits you so hard with action and visual assaults that dizziness is sure to ensue. It's dark, it's serious,
and it goes back to the formula that made everyone fall in love with the series in the first place. This is the film that
every other film this Summer is going to have to measure up to.
Dare I say that next to 'Empire', Attack Of The Clones is the best Star Wars movie of the series.
On a scale of 1-5, I give this film a 5.

Joel is dreaming this
We all know he's an early riser, I mean the guy has to get some rest, right? Imagine the smug grim on his face right about now as we fade into his dream ...
As he arrives at SFO from his 1st class flight I meet him at the gate. Aussiebrit is with me wearing that little red dress. I toss him the keys to the 850 and hand him a gift envelope. Inside is a pair of one way 1st class tickets to Bali for him and Aussie, along with a note that reads
"This is your lucky day Joel. I have to leave town for a week or so on biz so feel free to use my house along with your new friend who has decided to take a breather for a month or two, here's a map to get to my place. You'll find the door key on the bimmer fob. My Sharp 9000 was just dialed in so you two may want to relax with it together between Aussie showing you all the local sights.
When you guys get bored with the SF area just call JAL and tell them when you want to go to Bali. My sister just had her house there finished and isn't going to need it for many months yet. email him at the address below and he'll pick you up at the airport and is a great guy to show you all the best local stuff. He'll also make sure that the cook and maids are there for you. I know what the early stages of splitting with your ex can be like, so there's also a few thousand dollars for you in the envelope.
So have a GREAT time and be sure to post your impressions on HTOC so that everyone gets all the details of your adventure. Feel free to take the new notebook PC in my office along with you, of course. If you need to reach me you can find me living down by the river in a VAN!"
... wake up now Joel!!

Robert: I said no the Brabus upgrade for two reasons... 1) I can alsways do it later on, and I do not see the point inspending that kind of cash until I have lived with the 350 HP version for a while and 2) ultimate cash flow depends on where things end up with my ex. This could dbe my last significasnt expenditure for a while. That said, have no fear -- I will drive a Brabus modified C32 at some point and then decide, and yes, I will let you know.
Also,m answer me this... how many cars are going to be faster than my stock C32?

Robert, Joelc, Kieran et al: Okay, okay I get it. I'll buy the damned thing! Right after writing Uncle Sam a big check not to mention all of the recent upgrades, I have to creatively move money. The seller has a 4 Bimmer family. Daughter has a 3, wife a 5, his everyday car is a 7 + the 850i for fun. How much does his mechanic love him?
I'll run 100% premium fuel and synthetic oil to keep that V-12 happy. No reason to slow it down, right? Two things were eating at me. 1) insurance & 2) a full checkout of the car by my anal mechanic wh is actually named Dieter. In the case of the former it's a good thing I'm an old fart living in the 'burbs. Very full coverage will run $800/year. Seller will deduct for anything the mechanic says needs fixing. Keep in mind that I already have him down to $18K.

Kieran ( 192.25.142.23 ) at 7:21 PM EST Thursday, May 2, 2002
Is this a downgrade?
Curtis: My German EE buddy here at work is a BMW NUT.
I told him about your deal, and he got a HUGE smile on his face...
His first words though were, "yeah, but those are so expensive" I said, "he's getting it for nineteen five." "Wow! That's cheap!" I proceeded to tell him the details, and his only remark was that parts... ANY parts... are going to cost you an arm and a leg, so accept that now. He said 850i parts run WAY more than 3 or 5 series parts. I said, "but aren't there at least SOME common parts?" "not many..." But he still thought you should buy it.
I left his cube and he was still smiling at the thought of an 850i... LOL.
Re. you mechanic's suggestion that it's "okay" to use regular as long as you switch it back to premium every 3rd or 4th tank.... No offense to your mechanic, but I would not do that if I were you. You can run 87 in that car, no problem. But it is *designed* to run 92. The computer will de-tune the engine to run "optimally" with whatever fuel you put in it. I doubt that thing would EVER knock, even with el-cheapo 87. The problem is that the engine is then running in a de-tuned state, which is not what it was optimally designed for. If you want it to last as long as possible, keep 92 flowing through its veins. I hear this from mechanics all the time. The reason is because they are trained with the "no-knock" notion of octane selection. They know these engines will work fine w/ any octane so they tell people that. My dad's mechanic told him the same thing for his 740iL, and this guy is a top-notch mechanic. My father spent, what? $60,000 on my education as a mechanical engineer, and decides to ignore my educated advice in order to save $.10 at the pump.

Curtis: Are you nuts... buy that damn thing! I would not ever be debating it, I LOVE that car. If you do not buy it, I think that we should stop listening to your advice as you would have to have a few screws loose to pass on this (assuming cash is not an issue).
In terms of racing... bring it on! But be waraned, not that I am crazy enough to do this, but I got a call from the MB delaer asking me whether I would be interested in a Brabus upgrade for US7,500 whihc, among other things, boosts the hp and torque from 350 to something in the 450 to 475 range. I said, thank you no, I will suffer with the limited 350 and the 5.0 second 0 to 60 speed.
I WILL have the fastest nephew hauler in the world! Whether it can take the 850i, bring it on buddy!

Gasgeek: If you want some really good female vocals try: Eva Cassidy, women has a voice of an Angel. Too bad she is one now, died at a early age in her 30s from Skin Cancer and then became famous. Is this a downgrade?
Chris L.: Oh I'll make room in the garage for it. One tip the seller had "try not to give the keys to any vallet parking kid, but if you must I found that slipping him a $10 or $20 to take good take of her has worked out well."
V12's aren't known for great mpg's, yet the seller swears he has consistantly gotten 18 city/ 20 hwy since '95. His mechanic even said it's fine to run on regular gas as long as you give it super about every 3 rd/4th tank. My daughter the ultra-environmentalist is gonna be pissed - but my son might be pleased to be dropped off at high school.

Tony C: Good call Tony. I've had the Norah Jones CD for about 6 weeks. The gal I set up with the Meadowlark Hot Rod Kestrals turned me on to her. Besides being good, it was cheap. Most places are selling it for $8 or $9. Sorry I didn't share her with you all before too. I'm very taken with her. She reminds me a lot of Alana Davis and Amanda Marshall. She's young and the tunes are all very similar, but she has all the makings of being a good one.

opinins gents please?
Buzz: Well I like your 1st idea but (pun intended) will pass on being done, thank you! We think alike. The instant I saw this car I could have sworn it was maybe 3 years old. The owner liked getting it detailed a lot. As soon as I turned the key I was done for. That engine purrs/growls and everything is silky smooth handling. All it needs is a Dinan badge on its butt.
Reason for selling? He's retiring to Hawaii. No real need for a 12 banger anything there as you could circle the Big Island in about 20 minutes. He seems like the ideal seller (read old & overprotective of his baby).

Curtis: Wow... hard to believe that the 850i has been out for 11 years, and that what was $100,000+ new can go for under $20k now. I too have lusted after that model since it came out my senior year in high school. That would be sweet indeed. But, it *is* 11 years old.
Tough call... I'd have to see it/drive it first. That is an amazing car, though. 11 years and 100,000 miles ain't bad, either.

So this is how the cops nail you in this thing?
(the windows automatically roll-up at 90 miles per hour)
My only real concern of course is maintenance costs. Sis's boyfriend works on these & will do it for parts + HT time. I think I might do it as I have a buyer for my current car that leaves me with a nice amount leftover. The seller has come down in price by $1,500 & I strongly suspect he won't go lower - nor should he.
Should I pull the trigger? I wonder if I could outrace Joels' Carolla?! Probably not Ron, but I bet the gentler genger wouldn't mind a ride in it.

OT-Tennis
Curtis, I took my son last night to Tennis lessons. You should have ssen the 5-6 year olds. The funniest part was the Tennis Balls, they were SO DEAD that there was one ball that the kid tried to bounce and after three bounces,,it rolled. Now I know they are not superballs, but geez, the kids might do better with proper equipment. So I'm off to buy a few cans tonight for "donation" to the cause. Only one kid got smacked with the racket.......

tony C: "Thanks, but I've already got a big package right here..."

Sorry folks, couldn't resist. I'm feeling the lightening of that load that's been on my shoulders for the past several months. Crunch time was the last few weeks. Today we had a big pre-production presentation, and it went over with flying colors. Spent the last several days in the lab trying to break my design, and it passed all mechanical qual tests. Things are looking good, and I'm feeling silly!

DirecTV replacement receivers

Team Squidward
Morning everyone. Took me some time to catch up on the news, lots of posts this week!
Curtis, Gar: Some squids have the ability to pop their eyes out on stalks to look for prey while their body remains hidden in the sand. When a young/inexperienced motorcycle racer runs into a corner too hot and takes an unplanned offroad excursion at 90 mph - say, through the paddock, past the grandstand and though the beer concession stand before getting back onto the track - he often bears a striking resemblance to the aforenamed marine cephalopod.

DirecTV replacement receivers
Gar: The funding for replacing all authorized boxes in use has already been earmarked, in fact it was a part of the Dish acquisition deal. The trick as Bill pointed out is what to replace HD and Tivo devices with. One possibility is the Moxi Media Center box that Dish agreed to test out.
It has the ability to record 1080i and is also a broadband router. I would gladly trade a DTC100 for one of them.

"Quite a few people have said to me already, why are you spending money on VHS – it's dying! But it's not, actually," he says. "You've got the guy out there in Peoria, Illinois who's got a collection of a hundred or so VHS tapes that he's not going to be able to transfer to DVD, so he'll be using his VHS occasionally, even when he buys a new DVD player.

DTV 1080
Wild Bill: No need to reread your post. I was just stating my opinion. It will take years and 100 of millions before the change takes place. I know people that use the Dish Network and get it free, and don't have too many problems, time to time maybe. But your right it is more effective. I have Direct TV and subscribe, but having only one supplier down the road scares me, meaning more money and more control for them. Also the Free of Charge for new Receivers might be a right statement for now, but I am sure they will raise there cost to compansate. Who knows, good info though..

If there going to milk the market and turn around and say you need new boxes, then they better replace the one that I have with a current model, or they can piss off. Digital cable isn't that bad, and cable like Ron has will soon be on my doorstep. They are loosing more money trying new Encryption technology trying to stop our Canadian cousins from stealing it, ironically Dish encryption is better but it still can be hacked. DTV 1080
Curtis: Speaking of DirecTV, I've seen the new contract from DirecTV to their dealer base. DirecTV has cut off 5500 dealers across the country and the new dealer agreement is so ridiculous that many dealers are choosing not to renew. The new contract states that no installation of a DirecTV product can exceed $49.95. This includes hardware, labor and reprogramming of control devices. The word from DirecTV is also that those hi-def boxes you guys are buying will be obsolete soon. DirecTV has plans (after the merger is finalized) to issue new boxes to each and every client. The new box will utilize Echostars' encryption technology. They still don't know what to do with the TIVO and HD boxes. The cost of all new receivers will be born by DirecTV.

Sat C LNB kit
Curtis: You are correct that you can not use a "regular" LNB for sat C. The sat C kit includes what is called an LNBF type LNB, which works at a different frequency than a regular LNB. The kit includes a combiner that takes a regular LNB output (from 119) and adds the output from the LNBF (from 110) at a different frequency so it can "piggyback" down one cable to the 18v input of your multiswitch.
For those who had not heard, you can call directv and have them send you a sat C kit. If you qualify, by subscribing to showtime or premium services, they will only charge you for shipping of the kit. There are actually 3 options that they can give you, 2 of which include professional installation of the upgrade kit. I chose the "self install" option. I'm paying $8 and change for shipping only.

As one who spent years with an amazing woman 14 years my junior I offer up this ... you're likely to have one thing in common, as The Eagles so aptly put it. Even 11 years difference means that you two grew up in a totally different environment. This can become much more obvious after a long time together.
A lot depends upon how young at heart you really are. My grandparents were 18 years apart & blistfully happy till they passed away in their late 90's. YMMV of course. Why not try it on for size? Young women can keep a guy young or they can kill them

Did anyone watch Nova on PBS this week? It was called something like "why the towers fell" or something similar... anyway very hard to watch. Very interesting, to the engineer in me, but at the same time, very difficult to watch. I can't immagine anyone, who was even slightly more emotionally tied to the event than I, being able to watch that show. Very well done, and when you are ready for it, I highly recommend it. 1) The Zenith has both RGB and component HD outputs (switch selectable), so you shold be covered using it with your FP
2) You'll need a RGB to component converter to use the DTC100 with your Toshiba display. Either the Audio Authority TransCoder or the RCA brand box that does the same thing. Either Tony C or I may happen to have a fine specimen availble for sale (ask Tony who owns what & I'll follow his lead)

Around here the more they THINK you earn, the more that appear out of nowhere. That Benz should keep you in very good shape date-wise. My advice is to just relax and enjoy it all. You could be off the market before you know it.
Ron H:: You're welcome for the 1080 from Gar, the least he could do
Is it twice as good as a DTC100? IMHO it is. The bigger & better your display, the more obvious it gets. Does HD look better? I posted that I swore it does and can't for the life of me determine why. I am ultra familiar with the PBS HD demo loop. Today it just looks like it's all on a higher plane. Not that there was anything wrong with the RCA HD image. The Zenith simply nails colors, contrast, shadow detail, and well - detailed crisp images all around.
For SD OTA and DirecTV SD material, it kicks the DTC's butt all over the place. The OTS tuner is very sensative - you may recall that it locked unto all 12 of my local digitals with the antenna knocked over! Twice as much sounds expensive yet were taling about a delta of $400, not thousands. I bet a custom Vette exhaust runs a lot more - does the car perform twice as good?

Sat C LNB kit
Wild Bill: Thank you Gar for my freebie Terk Sat C kit. The dude you bought your Parasound gear from owes me more than a $50 kit.
Bill - are you sure about using any old LNB? Reason I ask is the the box, instructions and LNB all say this can only be used in the C/110 degree slot of Plus dishes & not to attemp to use any other LNB.
Yellow sticker on the LNB reads" For sat C use only (position #2, 110 degree, center) Compatable with DirecTV Multi-sat, Para Todos and DirecTV dish antennas. BSS 12.6-12.7 GHz, P/N 150850, Lot # 01453 NOT compatable with the standard DirecTV 18" dish antenna"
It has a single cable port & I'm guessing it's made by Channel Master, as every Plus dish I ever saw was also made by them. The included Sat C combiner is a reverse 2 way slpitter that also mentions "DC Pass". Th eother 2 items in the box are a 9" cable and a 31 1/2" one for connection. You unplug the 18v cable from your multiplexer and place the output from the combiner to it. Going up on the roof now before it's dark to hook her up.

Gar: I love it! Hands down best HD STB on the market, period. Wild bill is right - it does everything perfectly and includes both types of digital audio outs as well as RGB & Component video outs.
The user interface is perfect and optimized for HD (not just widescreen, the letters/graphics look pristine. The OTA tuner is super next to the DCT100. If rumors that its replacement will be inferior, you'll have no difficulty selling it off in the future. You're paying $799 from my guy, right?

Pre/Pro's, Rants and the Saga continues (Long)
As many of you know, I'm exploring pre/pros again. I'm limited to the brands that my buddy Brian carries, because I get my equipment as a kind of commission for keeping business moving through his place. (Just helped him secure another $110,000 project + the $30K or so since my last acquisitions)
I've always leaned toward EAD, but they have been pretty flaky for the last year or so, and the word is that the new pre/pros 8000 and 8000PRO don't sound as good as the old pre/pros. (Per our own Darian) There's also the issue of ridiculously complicated Operating Systems, although a Pronto can tame that. There's also the 8 channel analog bypass being done through the DB-25, but they at least have TARA LABs supplying the cable.
There has been a buzz about the new Aragon Stage One that had me excited, but there are some issues with that now after further research and educated speculation. Check out the forum at the Klipsch/Mondial site. From everything I can read and from Mondial's replies in the forums, it appears that they have dumbed this system down aiming for the more mass market crowd ???. The cost is the same and it appears they are using the same basic electronics as the SoundStage. They state that the sound should be the same. They have no balanced outputs on this new beast which they had on the Soundstage and the digital inputs are preassigned to each input, meaning non-assignable. To make matters worse, the three toslink are also preassigned, meaning that if you use the optical input for say the CD, DVD or Sat, then you override the coax that's assigned to it. So they don't really have 8 digital inputs, but 5. You are also stuck with their preassigned equipment designations. Now, add to that that they are almost two months behind on their announced shipping dates, although they keep saying on the forum that they should begin shipping next week. (dating back to 3-17-02) They already shipped the amps, but the dealers have been sitting there with amps for two months, and no preamps to demo them with. They are also doing the 8 channel analog bypass via a DB-25, but according to their own forum, they don't have a cable for it yet and will charge extra when they do. They're also claiming that the dealers should be receiving the Stage One based on when they orderd. Brian ordered two at CES. None in sight. Add to that the fact that they showed up three months ago with a prototype that didn't work. CAN YOU SAY ACT-3 TAKE 2!!!!
The Tag rep (whose main line is Monster Cable) was in the store the other day. He had told Brian three months ago that he would bring him in the newest version of the TAG prepro to demo. No Tag yet. Brian was busy and told me to pound on the guy a little. I was nice and asked the rep when he was going to bring in a TAG for the store to try out? He said he didn't have any. (Remember, this is the TAG rep for one of the largest potential markets in the world, Southern California). During our conversation, it became very apparent that I knew more about the product than he did. I asked him why they didn't have any demos and he stated that they thought the new AV192R version would be out by now, and so they sold their demo AV32R's in anticipation of the new release. I said, that I was pretty sure that when they announced the AV192R that it was understood that it wouldn't be available until at least this Fall. He looked at me very funny like and said (with an attitude I might add), "No, actually it won't be out until the Third Quarter." I laughed and said, "I thought Fall was the third quarter." He begrudgingly acknowledged that I was right.
I said that I was actually very interested in hearing the newest version, the AV32R192 with the 5.1 bypass. He had no clue what I was talking about. I then asked if the only dealer in So Cal was still Atlantic Stereo in Newport Beach and he said yes, but they didn't carry that much. He said there was another Tag dealer, but he only carried one of the mini systems. (Can you say Boom Box) Not very encouraging for the TAG folks.
Finally. The new Arcam has me very interested. Flyer and infor here
http://www.arcam.co.uk/news/
It was a finalist for the Tech TV High End Audio's "Best of Show" at CES. The specs look great, Brian heard it and said it was awesome. It keeps looking more attractive everyday. Probably won't ship until at least June. The heavy rumor is that it was actually designed by an engineer heavily involved in the TAG development.
Any confirmation on that Buzz?
The saga continues.......

AVB: H-P being based right up the road from here, everybody has been buzzing about this for months. Say what you will about Walter Hewlett - he forced the board to disclose far more info about layoffs & the numbers than they would have without him. He also knows when to quit. There are H-P people on my block alone who're all wondering if they'll be out of work.
Joe: Go for it. Are you thinking direct view, RP or FP? CBS rules the HD airwaves so try to lock onto that signal. I bet a ChannelMaster 4228 ($63) would do the trick.
Wild William: You're quite right, my bad. I confused HDCD with it. Real specs are here on it; http://www.denon.com/catalog/pdfs/DVD2800LIT.pdf

HDTV
Well starting on April 23 my local ABC is now transmitting
I get perfect reception now from ther transmitter. THe local NBc is due at the end of this year. The CBS station in Lansing (45 miles) is tranmitting, but the reception depends on the weather.
I might have to skip the Pre/Pro and think about upgrading the display first. I seen on the local abc report there is a new store in town called HDTVision. The clips from inside looks like they have some decent stuff.

i don't need no stinkin instructions
So my buddy buys the toshiba dst-3000 and an elliptical dish. After setting everything up, he can't get HBO HD or HDNET. So I'm running through things in my head and asking him to check. I go over there MOnday night and he spends in hour in the attic checking connections and all the multiswitch's while I hollar that there is still no pic(I didn't think it was anything with the multiswitch). I'm thinking Directv hasn't activated the HD channels but he swears they have. It gets late and I go home. The whole time he's griping about how nobody knows what the hell they are doing since he's called directv, toshiba, etc. asking for help.
He calls last night with the solution. Apparently when he aimed the dish and got a strong signal, he quit. So he never aimed the dish at the 3rd sat for the HD channels like it states to do in the instructions. HEEELLLLLOOOOOOOOO

HT Advice
Robert: I personal don't like the 40's, 60's(had these) and 80's, the 2 1/2 design muddies up the midrange, the 20's with a sub or 2 work better. The actives curtis has 450 are not the same as the 40's, they are 450 and are 2 ways, both mid/woofers play at the same time. The 40's are a 2 1/2 way, both the woofer and mid/woofer play up to around 400 the the woofer rools off to the mid, they both share the same cabinet and this is what muddies the mid/woofer. The 20's and 100's are much clearer. You do get more punch and low extention than the 20's but at a cost of midrange. IMHO
