Scott "popcorn": I see this as a direct attempt to forestall us all buying the bootlegs. Note the complete lack of any date, the fact that the next movie is about to start and will "occupy all our resources" again. There is nothing in this statement that would prevent them from releasing the entire set in 2006 as originally planned, and still claim that the didn't lie to us. Words like "officially begun work" and "not be released in 2000, nor is there any firm date beyond this year" don't really mean much to me. Sorry if I sound jaded, but this subject is getting a little sore. Luca$ didn't tell us any new info, except perhaps that they have "officially begun work".

Last summer i borrowed the 5" Panasonic to take on vacation, When your out with the wife & kids and you get back to the cottage or hotel room late at nite there's really not a lot to do but having that little DVD player was the icing on the cake, it's perfect for vacations!! Computer Video Cards?
Gar: It's ok... Big Al just said the gist of what I was telling you on IRC.
As for Video cards, I just got a VooDoo3 3000 and I like it (I like to buy yesterday's technology... almost as good and a whole lot cheaper!) But one thing you do need to remember... if you have an early AGP motherboard, make sure the card you get will work in it... The earliest AGP motherboards had linear voltage regulators on the AGP slot, good for about 2.5 amps... The newer AGP cards take about 4 to 5 amps... newer AGP motherboards have a switching regulator on the AGP slot for 6 amps. Almost burned up my PA-2013 revision 2.0 board a month ago when I got the card... I cuaght the error though and I bought a PA-2013 revision 2.1 to fix it... (put it in the other computer to upgrade the PA-2011 board) Yeah, yeah, I'm still in Socket 7 world... Slots are overrated. But I am looking forward to Socket A coming out and then getting cheap. Basically an AMD Athlon in Socket form...

Tony C: Tony I had both the Memory Stick and the Music clip, the memory Stick works great if you want to have a ton of stuff to record, but there software isn't as good as the Music Clips, and the Music Clips MP3 files do not need to be converted before there recorded.. If your looking to do a ton of recording on this format then buy the Rio or Memory Stick, if your going to use the unit for working out, biking, hiking etc...... buy the Music clip.

Big AL: Got one, works fine. Makes my TV look better less interference, and now I have it hooked up to my Hi-End system. Not bad at all. There working on a New one for HT applications. I also found out Sonys new TV will be in by Sept 2000, the new 57" Widescreen set will have firewire hookups and do 1080i, I just hope it has progressive scan inputs. Thinking of trading up instead of getting a new Receiver or Pre/Pro.

Also, it will be 2 items, as we don't carry plugs attached to wires. You'll have to get an AC adapter extension wire, stick the adapter plug into the female fitting on the wire, and snip the male end. Still will be well under $10, if I can find the correct size plug.

JBC, The RatShack doesn't carry a 5mm x 3mm adapter plug. To get the 3mm inside, you have to get a 6.2mm outer, which will be too big. I haven't given up yet though! Since we're a franchise, and not a company store, I can order from anyone. I just need some time to search our catalogs. I should be able to look Thurs. night. I'll let you know.

Man! This forum isn't good for a hypochondriac like me! I think I've had 3 heart attacks just reading all this! I worry about my heart all the time. Unfortunately, I'm unable to excersize, which is a double whammy. I can't lose weight, and I can't get a cardio workout. My other worry is that if I do have a problem, I can't do a stress test. Oh well, my prayers are with everyone on this forum, at all times, just in case.

Rich: Well, my wife is one of a kind! She ordered the Pioneer portable DVD for me for my birthday(which doesn't come for another month, mind you!) and it arrived today. The best part?? In addition to talking Onecall down to $899, she forgot to order the extended warranty for it. So in order to order it and apply it, we had to open it up to get to the serial number. Oh darn! Anyway, I am LOVING it!!!!! I just wanted you to know, and to tell you I appreciate the advice. Also, I found a perfect universal cigarette lighter adapter for it tonight at Wal-Mart!!! Made by PowerExperts, IT has a selectable range from 3V to 12V and puts out 2000mA, which is perfect for the Pioneer's 9V 2000mA requirements. Anyway, I tried it in the car a few minutes ago and it works great!!! Just thought I'd let you know. Oh....and I almost forgot the best part! Only costs $14.95!!! Beats the $99 they want for a SPARE battery! Thanks again.

Chris L.: Mot overweight at all there Chris. I've got you by almost 50 lbs. but I *am* big boned. If you met me you probably wouldn't think I was too heavy. I just need to lose 15 or so to get down to about 215-220. It also looks like I may have a torn tendon or ligament in my left elbow. I suspect my elbow problem will require more care than the heart thing. I wouldn't worry about it but it's bothering me when I play golf. The elbow will require surgery if I decide to get it fixed. It's an old weight lifting injury that has gotten worse in the last few months.

Chris L: I am the same height and weight as you but two years older then yourself. Checking your cholesterol should be done regularly. I found out recently that my cholesterol count is about 30 points too high. Hence, I am on a low fat diet for the next couple months. It feels kind of liberating being on a low fat diet. Heart diease is not common in my family but you never know what can happen if you don't take care of yourself. And in my case, I want to be around for my family for a long time.

All this heart talk has scared me straight into a doctor's appointment next monday. Heart disease is common in my family (my father has had 3 and a quad-bypass), so at 35 years old, it's about time for me to make sure all is okay. I've been through a couple of strong chest pains but have attributed them to heart burn. Hell, why not...my former doctor did. I'm 6'2" and 185 pounds. Not overweight but I don't get the exercise I should. Hey...you don't get much plopped in front of 4 or 5 DVDs on the weekends.

Wild Bill: The test you're describing is what my Dr. called the Cardiolyte stress test I was talking about. You get on a tread mill. When you feel like you can only go for about another minute, they inject you with the radioactive isotope. They then feed you a high fat meal consisting of potato chips and whole milk. After an hour, they do a 360 degree xray to see where the blood is pocketing. You do the same thing on another day or later in the day without the stress. Comparing the two will tell them if you have blockages or not.

Hello All: Thought I'd check out the forum over lunch and saw the heart disease topic below. I was involved in organizing the healthy heart walk in Tempe a couple months ago - here's some information that everyone should know about:
Let's say you're driving home (alone of course) after an unusually hard
day on the job. You're really tired, upset, and frustrated. All of a sudden you start experiencing severe pain in your chest that starts to radiate out into your arm and up into your jaw. You are only about five miles from the hospital nearest your home, unfortunately you don't know if you'll be able to make it that far. What can you do? You've been trained in CPR, but the guy that taught the course neglected to tell you how to perform it on yourself! Many people are alone when they suffer a heart attack. Without help, the person whose heart stops beating properly and who begins to feel faint, has only about ten seconds left before losing consciousness. However, these victims can help themselves by coughing repeatedly and very vigorously. A deep breath should be taken before each cough, and the cough must be deep and prolonged, as when producing sputum from deep inside the chest. A breath and a cough must be repeated about every two seconds without let up until help arrives, or until the heart is felt to be beating normally again. Deep breaths get oxygen into the lungs and coughing movements squeeze the heart and keep the blood circulating. The squeezing pressure on the heart also helps it regain normal rhythm. In this way, heart attack victims can get to a phone and, between breaths, call for help. Tell as many other people as possible about this, it could save their lives.

Gasgeek: The stress test indicated a blockage but the doctor felt that it was only a screening test. He's doing a dual isotope (sp?) test next time. I get to have nuclear material injected into my body and THEN they're going to put me through a stress test in relation with the dual isotope test. At least that's how I understand it. It's a 3-4 hour test. I'm feeling pretty optimistic about it at this time.

Wild Bill: Hopefully, all the tests will turn out for the good. Unfortunately, there is no "type" for heart disease. As in my case, it is hereditary. My heart surgeon told me that he has marathon runners and health nuts on his table all the time. It can also be simply a matter of how your body deals with issues like cholesterol, etc. My wife's boss is a health nut and an avid runner and has had two heart attacks and a bypass. I played college football and have always been in fairly decent shape, except for eating the wrong things and smoking, yet I had a bypass at 45 and my mother passed away at 46 from the same thing. (I no longer smoke and my mother never did.) I'm not trying to scare you, but I'm trying to emphasize that you need to follow up just to make sure and don't ignore the symptoms, even if you're feeling better. I had three weird episodes over one weekend but started feeling better and was just attributing the symptoms to other things. My wife insisted that I go in for tests. The first two tests, an EKG and stress test, only showed slight irregularities but because of my family history and symptoms, they kept doing more tests. A cardiolyte stress test with dye, finally showed some signs of blockage, but not where and how much. Finally, an angiogram uncovered a 99% blockage in my LDA. They took me straight upstairs for surgery. If I had continued to be macho, I would be dead. I'm sure you will be ok, but make sure they keep checking as long as there are irregularities.

My System Kicks Ass
You know where my system really shines??? Its on live recordings. When you have the sound of the venue to contend with. All the chearing and so forth. This is when the NHTs say, "Check this out!"
Last night there was a concert on VH1. Now as you know I don;t have a TV currently. A friend of mine asked if I could set up my VCR to tape the show. I took it one step further... II hooked up the analog outs of my EAD to the CD-R in my system. I had to rig a camcorder to the system so I could see what was going on. I recorded the concert to CD-RW and had to pay attention to set the tracks. Sting gave some good performances...
The big deal is this little blonde girl, Christina Ageleria? She cam out and sang some of the Pop stuff I hear on the radio. Yeah what ever, no big deal. Then she comes out on the stage and sings, "Life is like a song." Just her and the Piano. WOW! What a voice! Not too hard on the eyes either!
The recording while sounding only slightly compressed is an ear opener. If I see the CD for this performance in stores I will have to get it just for this number. (Yes its that good.) Playback from the CD-RW could be used as a good demo piece for speakers.

Wild Bill/All, Over the last month i've had a similar problem, about a month ago i was feeling very weak and always out of breath, so i finally allowed my wife to drag me to my MD for a check up, The Doc decided to do an EKG and as soon as he seen the results he dialed 911. After a couple of days in the hosp and 9 zillion tests it was determined that i did not have a heart attack (phew), but i caught a virus that caused fluid to build up around the outside of my heart, i also have an irregular heart beat and my heart is racing, so i'm on a deflamatory medication and it's working, the fluid is rapidly decreasing and i'm feeling much better, i'm also on a medication to slow down my heart and another thins my blood. on April 28th i'm back in the hosp for 2 procedures, the first will be to insert a tube down my throat into my heart to view it inside, if all looks good they will attempt to shock my heart back to a normal rythem.

I envy you both. I did the basement 8 years ago. hard to believe it has been that long. One thing i did that I am now grateful for was that I took pictures of the developement process. that is, I have pictures of the bare wiring and how I ran everything. This weekend when I go to rerun the 14/4 wire, I know exactly where everything is. Kinda like an easy blue print.

I've been watching quite a bit of hockey lately and I keep thinking how great this sport will look in HDTV. That DTC-100 is calling out, "Bill, Bill, here I am". If only ESPN and the DirecTV football packages were broadcast in HDTV.

I don't believe it is serious but I'll be glad when the results are in for confirmation. We just found out that Alex is asthmatic last week and that is probably adding to my angst.

Wild Bill: If I were you I would be concerned, but I would not lose too much sleep over this. You would not want your blood pressure to go awry also. The fact that the doctor is waiting almost a month before he sees you again probably means that he is not too concerned. Next time we meet remind me to tell you the Woody Allen routine about his friend Eggs Benedict. It has to do with gastritis. Hope this is only a false alarm.

Joe aka Iguana Master: It is exciting working on a project such as you have going. The Planning and the research is most enjoyable.
I plan to run a 20 amp service for my amps etc., a seperate 15 amp for the RP or FP (the electrician said something about having a seperate ground for the video) another 15 amp for for my speakers, and a seperate 15 for lights and other possible noise creating devices.
My son is the electrician so all I have to pay is his airfare and for materials. The framing should e completed this weekend and then I need to plan getting my son here for the electrical work. At that time we will also be running all the phone, speaker, video and audio cables to the appropriate boxes.
I will need to make a decision on the FP or to for now keep my RP. Either way I plan to have the wires pre run for both the RP and FP. That way I can be ready for any set up I desire.

RGB: not yet... and I'm gone this weekend for easter, so it may be a while.
Joe: SW on VHS was okay. Resolution sucked (zoomed LBX on my widescreen set), and my set was too red for the vcr inputs. Sound was all right for Pro Logic, but IMHO, not GREAT, even for DPL. Very enveloping sound, but not as directional as I expected. Some TV shows have better directionality in DPL recently, IMO.

Joe aka Iguana Master: One 20 amp for equipment and on 15 for lights fans and whatever else should be more then enough for most people. If you don't think that is enough then run a 30 amp circuit for the equipment and just use a dual Edison 20 outlet.

You new addition
Joe aka Iguana Master: I built my own equipment rack based on the "flexy" designs from HTF last week. It gave me a reason to get a drill press and a new saw. I like tools!!
I wouldn't woory about the wires for the rear speakers getting tripped on and damaged. If you are building the room you will have the ability to fish the wires through the walls. You should only have a minimal amount of wire coming from directly behind the speakers.

Hey guys. I had a stress test today. I was cruising along about 12 minutes into the test and the doctor shut the treadmill down. He noticed some abnormalities and I have to go back again in a couple of weeks for more testing. I thought I was doing great and was quite shocked to hear that my heart wasn't responding as it should. Hopefully the additional tests on May 12 will give me a clean bill of health. I had a couple of chest pains about 4 weeks ago and mentioned it to my regular doctor when I wasn't feeling well a couple of weeks ago. I'm almost 39, 6'2", weigh 230 (I could drop about 15-20lbs) and have always been in good condition. I was the guy on the basketball court that could run from one end to the other all day long when I was younger. I'm not a person that fits the prototype to have heart problems and hopefully I don't. I can tell you all that this is one heck of a wake up call. The moral of the story is that you all need to listen to the signs that your bodies give you. Don't try to be macho and think that health problems can't happen to you.

Sorry JBC, it was a late night and an early morning.
Well, you know, I got the amp because I wanted to bi-amp the NHT VT-2s.
Because I didn't have all the materials, I just set it up replacing the Adcom. I listened to a dts disc, then some new material I had to know before this trip and then to the new Steely Dan.
First thing i noticed was that my standard listening level for reference was -12. Now, that was too loud. I had to set the Lex to -17 to get the same level as before. Just a tad louder, I would say.
Second thing that hit me was that I didn't think that I needed to bi-amp the NHTs anymore. I was getting much, much deeper bass. I was always a skeptic about amps making much of a difference. I was very much surprised.
And there is no buyers remorse.

Then again there are perferated screens. Do these really make much of a differance in sound. What I mean is it really worth the extra money to have your speakers behind the screen. Does it not limit the locations possible?

I was looking @ AVScience lastnight at some of the theaters. Theone from Mike & Sally looks real nice. I liked the way he built the equipment cabient under the stairway. I had thought of doing a sidewall cabinet, with acess from my bedroom. I still like the thought, but my change sides and have acess from the pantry.
I am open to suggestion on the pros and cons of dual enterances. I was considering side entrances one from the pantry. This would be off the kitchen and would allow easy acess for company. Another from our bedroom for those private nights, when we could leave the theater and take a few steps to bed.
Is there any advantages to having a rear entrance. It seems to me if you have a side entrance, it would be easy to use towers for rear speakers. You could then postion them in the best spot and not worry about people trashing your wires or tripping on them.
A side into the pantry would give quick acess to the fridge and snacks.

Afternoon All,
Just came from the contractors, he will be out on Monday. He gave me a ballpark figure of 75k. He went on to add if I could finish the inside I could save a bundell.
I have the electrician ( father in law) HVAC ( uncle, cousin, cousin, ) Mason (cousin) excavator ( good friend ) and pipefitter ( myself)
I will have to do the insulation by myself, since no one will help with that.
So it looks like I will have to pay for the rough in and completetion of the bathrooms ( a wife DEMAND ). I should have a better clue on Monday.

GAR: Try com2, sometimes the mouse appropriates com1 and or the modem could be using com1 straight from the start-up. I also have a Dell machine where I also have problems using com1.

LapTop Config Problems
Question trying to download the new Software version for Sonys TA-E9000, and I Can't get this old piece of crap Dell to configure correctly. The unit is a older 166MMX unit and the Com 1 port won't read through the R-232 cable, infact none will.

Curtis: If you have your DTC-100 hooked up to your satellite dish, then you're all set. The upgrade is pretty much a transparent process. If you check your version and it's 40b, then the upgrade has already occured for your unit.

JR: It sounds like you made an adjustment to the blue gain. As you found out, a minor turn of one of those pots can lead to a large change. kpd and Duane would be best at helping you to resolve this situation.

RGB: When I turned the trimpot to the right, everything got green and when I went to the left, everything went blue. I first tried a trick someone posted on Errols site about putting your face up to the scren while adjusting the pot until there is no raster. It didn't seem to work all that well for me. So I paused a black image on a dvd to get the black as black as I could get it (not too blue and not too green). It think I need another tiny turn towards blue because the black are too black. I didn't want to mess with the contrast becuse I had previously used VE and I was using that level as my guide turning the trimpot. So in essence I guess I messed up the gray scale when turning the trimpot?

DTC upgrade
RGB: Upgrade? Details please. Determination alone made me somehow get the 500 lb gorilla (65" RP) up the stairs & into the living room last night ... by myself!! Nothing a little Advil won't take care of. I'll set up the HT this week including the dish/ DTC100. Life will soon be good again. Moving both your home and office at the same time with no professional movers is simply stupid. Then again it was a great workout ... there's no way I would have had the strength 2 weeks ago.

Anyone: Just wanted to say that in addition to The Insider, one of the other best films that I've seen recently was The Messenger. This was a very well done period film, if you're into those sort of movies. All the weaponry, armor, costumes, battles, buildings, ... everything was very well done, and to my eye, very period-accurate. The battle scenes are some of the best I've seen of that genre, on par with Braveheart (although I have not seen Braveheart in a LONG time, so my memory of it is not too sharp). If you know your European history, you know the story (if not you can read about it in any decent European history book). The movie was fairly accurate, as far as I could tell, although I haven't studied European History since... 9th grade (1988). They did take some "Hollywood Licence" though. However in the production featurette, they explained that they did go through extreme efforts to make the story as accurate to the truth as possible (based on actual hand-written court documents of Joan's heresy trials). I think Jovovich did a great job as Joan, and the supporting cast was all-star, which showed in the overall quality of the acting. Malcovich was, IMHO a little old to play the Dauphin though, who was supposedly (if memory serves) about the same age as Joan, or a few years older.
While not graced with the same quality of acting, another good telling of the story is the dvd of the made for TV miniseries, "Joan of Arc" staring Leelee Sobieski (who actually does do a great job).

I can't believe anybody buys this crap. $400 for something that is less effective than a $75 Rat Shack yaggi. Unbelievable. When somebody on avsforum recently said that "Terk is the Bose of the antenna world," he hit the proverbial nail on the head, IMHO.
Has anybody here EVER used a Terk antenna with better results than something that cost less than it? Just curious...
I once bought a $50.00 set-top uhf/vhf/fm Terk antenna (the TV25, I think) and it got worse reception than my unamplified, bent, pulled-from-the-trash-heap, dusted off, 20 year old rabbit ears.

My movie reviews
RickMTB/Others: I saw 3 Kings in the theater, and while I thought it was an enjoyable movie, with a fairly respectable message, I thought the explicit graphic effects were a bit much (overused, IMHO). Also, the trailers and advertisments for the film's theatrical run were very misleading. I thought it was supposed to be somewhat of a comedy. It had a few funny lines, but what movie doesn't? This was a very serious drama. It wasn't the best movie I've seen, but it was okay. A definite rental, though. I think I'd like to rent it again, actually... if for nothing more than to hear and see it on my system. I recall it having very impressive sound in the theater.

Saw Three Kings last night. Yes, it *is* a different film, but
very enjoyable (at least to me). I agree that I won't buy the film
(I actually buy few films), but I strongly recommend it. Interesting
that they felt it ncessary to warn people about the odd cinematography
effects. A movie I really did *not* enjoy was For the Love of the
Game. I really like most Costner films, and yes, Preston was the
film's highlight, but it was so ploddingly predictable (compared
to the great baseball films like Field of Dreams and The Natural)
that I drifted in and out of sleep...

Darian: Actually, I really experienced one of those "van scams" when I was in college (it happened in 1994, I think). This was long before I was into HT, or even had a good sound system at all. I only had a little boom box. So, I honestly wasn't interested in the speakers they had in their van. However, I had no idea this was a common scam all over the country. I was, of course very suspicious, though. Then, when I get into HT and start reading some of the various forums and newsgroups on the net, I realized how common that scam is. Now I'm glad I didn't have a need or desire for speakers back then. I might have made a very dumb puchase. As for the tape, it was very obviously a real Ep.1 widescreen tape, with all the packaging, and everything. And the label was silkscreened on the cassette; it wasn't a stick on label. I had seen the tape at a friend's house, so I knew what it should look like. As far as I was concerned the only risk was if the tape he bought was unviewable for some reason... but then if that were the case, he'd probably have been able to return it. So, it was a gamble... but I felt like it was pretty safe. Plus, I had seen him before in that Blockbuster with his kids, and walking around our community with his wife.

I know I just said (in one of my recent posts) that I was going to hold out for the dvd, but.... let me explain!!!
I was at Blockbuster renting a couple movies Friday night (Mickey Blue Eyes and The Insider -- Insider is one of the best, most engaging films I've seen in a LONG time, BTW). So anyway, at the counter, I asked the salesman why they had taken down their display of Star Wars #1 tapes for sale (I couldn't believe they had sold out already). He said they had indeed sold out. "Out of the widescreen ones, too?" I asked. "Yes, all of them." So, surprised, but not terribly interested, I shrugged my shoulders, paid the rent for the two dvd's I had, and left. On my way to my car, the fellow renting movies from the cashier next to me caught up to me and asked me if I was wanting to buy the widescreen SW movie. "Not really," I said, "I'm planning on waiting for the dvd." He continued anyway, "Well, if you want it, I'll sell you mine for $15.00, it's in my car." I asked why he was selling it, and he explained that his wife bought it not realizing it was widescreen, and when they watched it, they and their kids decided they wanted the P&S version, since their 26" TV was too small for widescreen. The problem was that the store where she bought it wouldn't take it back, since they had opened it. He said that it was not even viewed once all the way through, and that all the extras (the book and the celuloid) were intact. I offered him 10 bucks, and he countered with $12, and I bought it. So, there it is... I actually bought a VHS tape of a movie... AND it was the one that I said I wouldn't buy. In fact, I think this is the first VHS copy of a movie I've EVER bought (I didn't buy movies before I had a dvd player.) My justification to myself (however weak it may be) is that the movie was already bought... so at least I was buying a "USED" copy. (Although he replaced it with the p&s version, so...)
So, can you ever forgive me, HTOC? Shall I be banished forever in shame from the tribe?
I hope not....

Cytotech: I watched Three Kings tonight. Not exactly what I expected, but the soundstage was really good. Or, I can atribute that to the new amp I hooked up today. A lot of good movies are being released on DVD. I'm not sure I want to own Three Kings. I'll rent End Of Days next week and see how that is.

Finally had a chance to sit down and enjoy some flicks this weekend, while taking advantage of the Blockbuster Rent One Get One Free card I received with my dvd player.
Astronaut's Wife... Weird movie, but fairly enjoyable. Wonderful picture AND sound...
Entrapment... Pretty good, great cinematography, but couldn't quite enjoy the Zeta Jones/Connery matchup.
The General's Daughter... Wonderful, but freaky movie. Great sound... Picture was good too.
For Love of the Game... My favorite by far of these 4. If you like baseball and/or Kevin Costner, get it. Extremely worthy of a buy. Even if you don't like baseball, it is worth a rental. Kelly Preston.... Growr!

As for the pictures, only the pictures that had thumbnails with them are available. This will change soon, as we make thumbnails for the remaining pictures.
And as for carriage returns, do you mean blank lines between text? If so, then you are correct. If not, then... well, all the input fields that are multiline should be doing carriage returns just fine...

I ordered all the materials for my project today from Century Electronics.
14/4 wire, 3 four gang speaker terminals in decora plates and interconnects. Even a new s-video cable cause one went bad.
I couldn't pick them up yesterday because it got too busy. No problem, I'll get them today.
Well, I just called and they're closed on Sunday. My bad.
I went to Home Depot and Ace. No luck.
Radio Shack was closed, so I'll try it later.
If not, I'll just replace the amps and finish next week.

Two priests decided to go to Hawaii on vacation and that they would

So can anyone tell me what the difference is between the DSP-A1 and the RX-V1 Receiver besides the tuner section? It seems that HT is getting far worse then the Computer industry, or at least it is catching up. a) In my room, you can barely see a cable. All the speaker wires are through the walls.
b) I'm suggesting that Joe can put the equipement into a flush mounted rack that would be flush with the wall. That would be ideal. Especially if you had easy access from the rear. If he can't do that, then he may have to hide them.
c)I learned that my kids or others really can't break anything by touching a button or two. They may cause some aggrivation by making you readjust, but really, unless the kid is a hellian, what can be broken?
d) those interested may be shown, yes. But do you want to bring them through your bedroom and into your closet? Like Joe is talking about? My wife would kill me.
There are many times I think about what I would have done differently if I were to build again.

Tony C: Let me play devil's advocate for a minute. My preference would be to have the equipment out of sight for various reasons including:
a) The mess of the cables is gone -- one of the big pluses of having my speakers wall mounted with proper connector plates (yeah, I know that I owe you pictures).
b) The room is more functional. If I had a cupboard to stash the elctronics, then I would have a better place for my subwoofer and/or room for a front projector and/or less grief from the significant other .
c) Less chance of the nephew or other interested party playing with my gear.
d) Those interested can always be shown the gear in its enclosure.
e) Give the setup a degree of "professionalism".

One thing about hiding the equipement is that you don't get to show it off easily. That sounds vain, I know, but don't we do that virtually right here?
As far as sound coming through the closet....it will happen. Remember that the only thing that really stops bass is mass. When you do your HT, you can use styrofoam bats inbetween joists or other good sound proofing material is carpeting and carpet padding. Just start collecting from neigbors who are getting rid of theirs.
Use extra thick sheet rock or double the sheet rock.
Depending on your own situation, you can decide how much sound you want to contain in the room and how much sound you want to keep out of the room.
for example, having sound leak into the master bedroom is better than it leaking into the baby's bedroom.

Addtion talks
Afternoon all,
We have agreed on what is going into the 2 bathrooms. One is justa remodle job. A simple shower, stool and vanity. The other one is new a soaking tub, dual sinks and a shower, with jets and foot masaage.
Next to decide on is kitchen stuff. Looks like besides cabients I will have to buy a new stove and dishwasher.
The bedroom is still under sizing consideratins. We will have a walk in closet between the master bath and bedroom, but I am considering running one down the long wall. This would wall upto the theater room. I was considering placing the equipment on the wall and the back of it would open into the closet. This would allow acess to the equipment backs.
I am concerned of sound transfering though the equipment to the bedroom. I am also considering placing the equipment in the bedroom closet and just placing a IR repeater system in the theater room.
I can't decide, but I have time and advice from my friends here
By the time I pay for everything I will most likely just move what I have now for the electronics and invest into a projector of some sort. Are there any rules of thumb when figuring projector cable cost. That may figure into equipment placement.

Hey everyone! Got back the results from my wifes ambio test. Looks like we are going to have a healthy baby girl around September of this year. My wife and I put together a list of girls names, which totals 60+ names. After considering all the names, we could think of, we have come to agree upon a name. Amazingly it went very smoothly. What is interesting about the fact that we are going to have a girl is that my sister had two girls and my brother had a girl. None of my siblings had any boys.
Watched Disney's Tarzan the other night. Very enjoyable movie. The animation and 5.1 sound was great. Disney did a wonderful job on the quality of the animation.

I am reading through the May issue of SGTH, rather than working, and noticed two points of interest that i thought I would share:
1. Sunfire has a replaced the Theater Grand pre/pro with the Theater Grand II pre/pro. DOes anybody have any info on the changes?
2. The ATI pre/pro that JT (and maybe RochardS) were considering has an MSRP of US$4,000. It better be a killer becasue for that price there is a loy of competition (i.e., Bryston, EAD, Lexicon, Proceed on a stretch, Theta, etc.)

To use the 12v trigger on an amp, would a 12v AC adapter, with the proper mini plug, plugged into a switched outlet on my receiver, then into the amps trigger input, actually work? It seems to easy and inexpensive to work.

Rich, I checked out the Compaq notebook for $1999, if that's the one you saw, it's a 500MHz PIII. I checked to see what kind of deal I could get you, and with my employee discount, I could swing $2600 delivered. Some discount huh! Hey everyone! Thanks for the "happy birthday wishes"! Unfortunately, I had to work extra today because the manager had to cover for someone at a different store. 9am to 7:30 pm with no break, almost as bad as UPS. The wife kept calling me, "telling" me dinner was getting cold, and the customers kept piling in. The good news is I sold about $900 worth in the last 2 hours, which increased my commission for the month a whopping $4.50! HT upgades here I come!!!

I found a guy who is selling a 3k6 for $1500. Considering you can purchase his used unit, send it to Cinepro and pay $2,000 for an upgrade to a markiii this is a fairly cost effective manner of getting one considering that the price until the end of APril is $3,800 and will increase to arond the $4,500 on May 1. Tony C: Yes, I read on SMR of a clever method of building an adaptor to run from the Line Conditioner sensor (which is a male Edison 15 plug on the Panamax 1500+) to the bare wire or DIN connector on the Lexicon. Essentially one takes a female Edison 15 plug and attaches a run of 18 guage zip cord and voila. While this is feasible, it is not a long run solution as the PowerPros do not have sensors. I therefore want to rig the amp to engage/disengage from the Lexicon. As an aside, I am looking forward to your "weekend update".
Stock Market: Took my Audi in for service today. The dealer, who also sells Porsche, asked if I wanted a deal on one as, and I quote, " a f&*&^g boatload of people have cancelled in the last two weeks". Go figure!!

Joe aka Iguana Master: My HT is 14 x 27. Take a look at the pics in the members section.
One thing you want to keep thinking about is the future.
If you can afford it, run separate conduit to boxes that will hold wireing for your speakers, cable, fiber optics, phone lines, computer, etc.
One thing I wish I did was to run AC and dedicated conduit through the floor to the middle of the room. This would be great for wireing up an expensive remote system or even a game console.
I did a good job of soundproofing the room, but it still isn't perfect. Remember, you don't want to hear the furnace kick in, or the toilet flushing while your in a quiet suspenseful part of a movie.
Start looking at X10 stuff. It's way better than it was years ago.

Star Wars on DVD
Cytotech: Yeah, I already read that on the 'bits. Personally, while I really like Bill Hunt's style, and applaud his work furthing the dvd format, I'm taking this news with a BIG OL' HUNK of salt. I honestly think that Hunt is often overly optimistic when it comes to certain things like this. Just because "work is being done" on the Ep.1 dvd, doesn't mean it will be released before 2005. I hope it will, but I'm not going to hold my breath. Lucas has managed to loose any shread of faith I had in him, to cater to his fans; his source of wealth.

Star Wars on DVD
Check this out...from The Digital Bits
We've got some extremely cool news for you today! This morning on KROQ radio in Los Angeles, morning show hosts Kevin and Bean interviewed George Lucas... and he specifically said that his team at Lucasfilm is currently working on the DVD version of Episode I. Lucas also revealed that the first draft of the Episode II script is now complete. You can read more on this over at our fellow IGN.com affiliate The Force.net. But that's not even the best part.
A good friend of the Bits had the unique opportunity to spend some time chatting with Lucas in person this week, and among the many topics discussed were the Star Wars DVDs. What our friend learned is amazing, but the person is sworn to secrecy on most of it. However, thanks to Lucas' comments on KROQ this morning, our friend can confirm that there are still several unfinished scenes and sequences from Episode I, the original Star Wars and the other films. Lucas plans to finish them and include them on the DVDs. Whether these scenes are edited back into the film or included in a separate deleted scenes section is still unknown. What's taking so much time is that ILM actually needs to complete the footage - much of it was never finished originally. And since work on Episode II is under way at ILM, along with several other non-Star Wars films, resources there might be stretched a bit thin. But best of all... our friend says Lucas seems totally enthusiastic about doing the DVDs.
On a separate note, we CAN confirm unofficially that there is work underway on at least the Episode I DVD. Another friend of the Bits, who was visiting a post production facility in L.A. on business recently, noticed a box full of digital master tapes of Episode I in anamorphic widescreen and in multiple languages (the person was told that they're for the DVD).
Naturally, there's no word at all on release dates. But the whole situation is starting to look pretty good for DVD fans...

Back in the workforce
Well, my days on the unemployment rolls are over, as I just accepted
a position with Compaq (over Deloitte & Touche, Clarify, and PeopleSoft)
and I will be starting in Houston on May 8th. As a result I will have
to miss any upcoming Bay Area HT gatherings but I will look forward
to touching base with Ron H and all other Houston based HTers.
Hopefully this means I will be able to start fantasizing about HT
upgrades again...

Gar: The PP20 uses 8 watts when nothing hooked up to it is on. That won't do much to your electric bill. So far, I haven't seen a difference in mine.

Darian: I agree that Crestron is more difficult to work with -- hell, it took me the better part of two weeks to get my buddies Crestron to programmed, not to mention the running all those IR blaster/repeaters. The one in the RPTV was a particular pain -- it had to be installed inside the cabinet!!
I just thought that this was to be a "cost is no object" so... go for the 14" active matrix touch panel!

Crestron Sucks! And you know why??? It all has to be on disc. You can't produce on your own. The Pronto will do just fine with the gear listed. Its close to as flexable with more programming possabilities.

OK... work stress is getting me a bit, not to mention the fact that my practice is being sold. That being said, I am going to be rewiring my system in anticipation of getting my new amp. Here goes:
1. I want to power up my system amp->peripherals and power down my system peripherals-> amp or do I have this sequence reversed?.
2. Option 1 is via the Panamax 1500 ( I know that it is less than ideal to plug the Cinepro into the Panamax but this will have to do until I order the PP30). This would be achieved by plugging the Cinepro into the "delayed" outlet on the Panamax and plug the Panamax sensor into the Lexicon MC-1. Has anybody tried this? Any comments?
2. Option 2 is the manual approach. Turn the amp on and then power on the components via the macro in my remote and vice versa on shut down.
Overall comments?

Just watched True Lies on LD/AC-3.
It was a lot of fun. Only thing is, I discovered that the s-video connection is bad. I watched on composite and it looked much better.
THis Pioneer demodulator I got works great for 5.1 and for dts. And it only takes up one input. cool.

B. Bupb, an Ohio man, found that an odd name can have its drawbacks. According to a 1951 UPI story, Bupb was fishing in Florida and broke his glass eye and wanted to send a telegram to his wife to send him his "spare."
Quoting from the original story, here is what transpired:
"I want to send a telegram," he told the Western Union operator by telephone.
"Your name?" asked the operator.

In case you haven't seen this, there is apparently a DTS demo disc 4 that is being sent out right now. I don't know if this is the correct email address to send to, but there's a thread at HomeTheaterForum that says you can request it from CONSUMERINFO@dtsonline.com.

Sony TA-E9000ES
NJMike: I'll concur with AVB's posting and add that v1.18C of the firmware is available to D/L from Sony's site. DD/DTS decoding is flawless, and the flexable bass management alone is worth the price of admission. At this point, the only wish list I have for the TA-E9000ES is component video switching, but I'm sure I can get an external component switcher at some point.

Sony TA-E900ES
NJMike: OK, Let me start by saying that the 9000 is the best AV preamp you can buy for the money. While the Lex and EAD and Krell may be better at this moment they are not 3 times or more the cost better for me. The unit will handle any input you can toss at it with plenty of audio,digital and video inputs. The only thing lacking as far as inputs is componant switching and even some of the ultra high end machines don't do that either. With the v1.14 software it is as quiet as one could ever hope for and the upgrades are very easy to do. When I was looking I demoed a Marantz and even a Yamaha DSP A1 (to use only as a preamp) and even though I like the DSP modes of the Yamaha I took the Sony.
The DACS in the unit seem to be pretty good compared to my Parasound 1100 but lack HDCD ability. Of course, you already know that the remote isn't the best but I can live with that. So if this had Componant switching, HDCD and 6 channel ins it would be a danm near perfect AV preamp. For the price, if you only keep it 3 years you'll be ahead of the game and can buy something else then.
As for sound it does SEEM cleaner then the Parasound combo I was using but only afet the newest software was installed. Since I didn't do an A/B that may only be wishful thinking on my part. Also, I installed my Cinepro PP20 at about the same time as the software so that had something to do with the overall sound of the system too. I say buy it buy it.

Damn... this stupid proxy gets so slow during the day... I'm saving the ziped (37 MB) full screen version of the X-Men traler v.2 right now (they had a link for it... duh!) And I'm only getting a transfer rate of .... about 58 Kb/sec. It slowly climbing but gee wiz... this is a 100 Mbit T1 line for cryin' out loud!!!!

Scott "popcorn": I don't have the luxury of installing whatever I want on this machine. It belongs to Boeing. Although I do have full local admin rights for NT on this box, I wouldn't want to risk installing a new OS, since if I mess it up, they'll take away my admin rights. Which allows me to install various apps and whatnot if I want. (like QuickTime, for example.)

Well just to make you feel better, I've got an IBM Intellistation ZPro with a 550 MHz Xeon processor, and A GIGABYTE OF RAM, and it still gets choppy. Go figure... if this beast can't do it, then I'd like to see the one that can (assuming it's hardware related... it could be software... either the qt software, or Windoze.... I'm running NT 4.0)

Kieran: Well gee... hmmm... how about looking at the link text (it should show up down at the bottom of your browser), and find the one where it links to *.mov (or, even better, look through the source HTML to find the filename and path)... then, just right click on the link and select "save link as"... But be wary... I downloaded an "intro" part first, which wasn't the trailer. It had a "ph" in the filename.

Try right clicking on the loading trailer and see if it gives you the option of saving to disk. Sometimes it does(The first X-Men trailer) and sometimes it doesn't(2nd X-Men trailer). Who knows. Incidently, it is choppy as hell on my computer(PII 300 w/ 288 MB ram), even with the sound buffer increased, etc.

Scott "Popcorn": When we were talking about the trailer to X-Men the movie back a couple months ago, you were able to download the actual qt file and play it locally. How did you do that? I've got qt installed, but it doesn't play smoothly (it plays fine for the first minute or so, then gets all jerky, and drops frames.) So, I'm thinking if I could d/l the qt file for the trailer (MI2) and play it locally, it might work better. Ideas/suggestions?

JJ: Have visited main several times. IT IS COLD up there. The beach water never warms-up. Very nice scenery though, green almost all year round. In general I found the people to be a bit more reserved than New Yorkers, I am from NYC, and more outwardly friendly. Good skiing at CamelBack mountain, nice scenery at Jackman (Long Pond), weekend trips to Quebec city possible, Rockport is the home of Andre the seal (I think it died), my wife and her family used to go to Cold River camp, on the border with NH (nice for a hiking week), lobsters are plentiful (though not cheap), and you will be next door to LL Bean.
Not for me, at this stage of my life, but, I can think of a lot of worse places.

Its not that I don't like the EAD, but its a matter of whether I need something so esoteric as the EAD when there are products available that are more affordable and provide equivalent performance for my 90% HT usage.

Ron H: no $#!+ ? Well, it is very early in thought. But my wife will likely change jobs as her commute sucks. Someone who works with my wife came to visit while we were in the hospital. This person relayed to my wife's boss, just how crappy it is, and how she has renewed respect for my wife. My wife's boss says to her: I'll to anything to keep Trish (my wife). She would even offer her the same job in Portland. My wife actually went up there for a few days, and she really liked it.
So I guess what I'm saying is, that we might relo up there. We are really getting tired of the NY metro. Families will be pissed, but we've got to think about making our lives, and our baby's life better.

Rich: I cannot recommend a Compaq Notebook computer. My company issued them to the reps and they have been nothing but trouble. The one I use has been back to Compaq three times in one year for repairs and still does not function properly. I'd look at Dell or IBM if I were you.

I did get away to see "Etta James" and "Dr. John' on Sunday night at the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center. A little 2000 seat converted High School Auditorium. Dr. John was ok, but Etta was spectacular. One of the best bands I've heard in a long time. Three piece horn section, two guitars, bass, drums, piano and B3 Organ. Unfortunately, Etta is so heavy now that she had to come on stage in an electric cart and be helped into a chair, but she can still sing. What a set of pipes. She boogies from that chair. Boy howdy does she boogie!

JBC: Ther SwitchMaster had a real expensive comb filter built into it. When I met with EAD in March of 99 we discussed the SwitchMasters sales. Also I pointed out how most people don't have need for the 6 analog ins on the Signature. We started talking about how hard it would be to add the DAC from the Signature to a Ovation's inputs. A little more talking and I named it the Standing Ovation. The rep for my area and I both started refereing to this product as such. I bought one a while ago for my system. EAD calls it such or the Ovation Plus. Depends who you are on the phone with. It does not have a comb filter in it. You get the 3 S and 3 composite.

Rich, I would highly recommend a Compaq laptop (gee, I may be
a little biased all of a sudden ;-). Seriously, the ones I have
seen are reasonably sized and the ones with DVDs (a must now IMO)
are relatively affordable. I know the Sonys are sexy and thin,
but I haven't had a bit of trouble with the Presario
I am typing on so I can strongly recommend them...

RGB: I do have an MTB, but I'm flying up north for Mom's day / my Mom's birthday (5/12) and I won't have my MTB with me. RickMTB had said I should rent one, so that we could go on a ride together that weekend. The problem with renting for me, though, is that I am so tall (as you know). It's hard enough for me to find a bike that I would BUY, let alone, a RENTAL. But since Rick may be moving, I might just decide to suffer through a day on a midget's bike!

Since this is an open and un-moderated forum there is nothing that keeps anyone of us from posting something like: "If I get ten people lined up I can get a Nakaguchi XR41Z for $1300, email me if ineterested." As long as the site does not list the buyers or the dealers I can't see where we (members) are acting as an agent since there is no control over the posts.
Ebay and Yahoo both have disclaimers that prevent liability.

I'm hard-pressed to come up with any cons. I love the functionality of the unit, the way it looks, its software upgradability. Not to mention, it SOUNDS as good or better than anything else I listened to. Only the Theta Casa Nova sounded as good to me for anything in or below the same price range...and I personally thought it was ugly, and had fewer features I'd use. (If you have a Pronto...you'll love the "teach your learning remote" feature built into the AVP)
I guess if you like lots of sound modes...it doesn't have them, but I personally prefer to avoid those, so it wasn't an issue for me.
If you're looking to drop ~$5k, though, definitely look also at the Theta Casa Nova, Lexicon MC-1, and possibly also the Meridian(can't remember the #...561?). At that price-point, you really can't go extremely wrong with any of them, and it boils down to which has the extra features that you find most appealing. (software upgradability was a big one for me)

Gar: I think what JohnO is getting at is that if the seller has not been "certified" by the company who makes the products he is selling in group purchase deals to perform group sales, then he and any "accomplices" (aka, the whole of the HTOC) can be held liable in any complaints the company decides to make. Sure, if someone has been given specific rights by the company making the product, it's ok.... But do we know that? Not to mention, do we even want sales going on here at all? I'm with all the members who have said that sales here should be limited to the salesman introducing himself, and then taking the sales talk elsewhere, such as e-mail. Even that could present liability concerns...

Something new to complain about
Last night I find out I may not gradurate in a few weeks. So I go see the advisor. He tells me He cannot subsitute the classes I want to take in order to grad. On top of that he throws in we maynot accept some of the classes you have taken in the program.
I was so FU*&^) Pissed. I started in on my point of view and my lab partner suggested we leave. Once in the hall he said wait until you have the paper. I talked to the department head today and he might sub the classes for me. If not I will have to wait for Fall for one class.
So I think to myself I will check UofM and MSU, they are not offering the class in question. Man, it sucks.

Let me throw my two cents in.
I am of the mind that we have always managed a fairly good "group rule". If we don't like what someone is doing, we all let them know.
Personally, I think anyone should be allowed to post. If we AS A GROUP(or at least a majority) have troubles with a poster, we can take it up then.
The greatest asset of this Forum has ALWAYS been it's backyard conversation style. If you had a cookout and a saleman friend of yours kept trying to sell everybody stuff, you'd get peeved. But if he mentioned he was a salesman and let folks come to him privately, that's different.
Remember this as well. Posters often lurk before they post. If they don't like what they see...they may not even continue to lurk. They might just go away.

Gar and others: Legal Issues: Actually, I can see the potential for problems. Reasonable people wouldn't see them, but we are talking about lawyers here. If you are connecting buyer and seller, are you not an agent? Even unpaid, if the work somehow enhances your site, is that not payment? If you connect a bad buyer to the seller, or the other way around, do you have any responsibility? Most reasonable people would say no, but that doesn't prevent lawyers from dragging you into court to prove it.
I was once involved in a parking lot car accident where I was blindsided by a person who did not stop at a stop sign. After totaling my car (cheap car, less than $1k), she and her car continued on and damaged a parked car 35 feet away. The insurance company of the parked car sued BOTH of us! The responsible party eventually setted the issue, but not before I got dragged around court for a day.
My next door neighbor got sued by the person next to him (2 doors from me) for $1,400. The reason? His cat roamed loose. The offended party's cat became excited seeing the outdoor cat and "marked" the wall to wall carpeting inside the house. He had to hire a lawyer ($500) and spend a day in court. The judge became upset that his time was being wasted by this sillyness, and instead of dismissing the case, ordered the defendant to get rid of his cat!
So nothig surprises me anymore when lawyers become involved.

Re: going to Irvine for an interview. I have been also interviewing

degree. I reckon its a "numbers game" for the companies as well,

I'm going to (try to) be brief here.
I have no problem with Chris A or what he does. I've emailed him in the past to find out about deals... long before anyone here mentioned him. He offers a great service for FREE, and one can get some amazing deals through his network. If he wants to post here as a member, GREAT! However, I think his posts about the group purchase stuff are better served on a threaded forum. And, I think that's probably why he hasn't posted here.
If I had to vote, I'd say let's not start putting buying-oriented posts, like Bob@avalon's posts used to be, and how Chris A's (even though he's not a retailer) threads are.
Let's not forget that we have a buy/sell/trade page. I'd have no problem if Darian, Bob, Chris A., or anyone else with info about deals and whatnot wanted to place posts there.
On the whole though, this is an open forum by design, and a small amount of any kind of post should be tolerated. I'd just hate to see the forum inundated with sales oriented posts, which, based on the popularity of Chris A's service, would happen.

ALL: One response I got from a prospective employer wants to interview me for a position in IRVINE (not exactly the direction I wanted to move). So, should I take the interview anyway, just for the experience of it, even though I really have no intention of taking a position with them in Irvine? (It turns out that for this company, the only office that has engineering is the Irvine one... so there would really not be much of a chance of moving elsewhere within the company). When I was a college grad, the rule of thumb was, go to as many interviews as possible, even if you didn't want the job, just to get experience interviewing. Now that I've moved on from that era, I'm thinking I should just tell them I'm not interested... your thoughts?

I hesitate to jump in on this thread, but Popcorn is right(IMO) on the issue of whether the group purchase idea should be brought in. It's another change to how things operate, and godd or bad, we're pretty much a (very chaotic) pure democracy here.
Popcorn - Seems like a great issue to put to a vote on your voting page, don't you think?

Cajun Mike: I think the ignore button is a good idea. You don't know me, I don't know you. Judging by the way you treat people I don't want to know you. The same comments made about me in your post about could be made about you. No, you did not attack me personally. Does that make it right to attack someone else? If you make a post on a public forum anyone can respond. The fact that you didn't direct the attack at me does not mean that I cannot respond.
In a subsequent post I offered an apology (which was admittedly half-hearted) and you responded by attacking and calling me a coward. Again you don't know me so I won't have to justify the attack by responding in kind. I've enjoyed bantering with you in the past but the lack of depth in your comments becomes boring and juvenile after awhile. I guess I've had my fill. Your M.O. is no better, IMHO, than mine, Popcorns', or anyone elses on this forum. Talk about taking the moral high ground. You criticize at every opportunity. Given the fact that Popcorn got jumped on by the entire forum just a couple of weeks ago for his BeOS banner I believe he was justified in stating that an invitation to someone to use our forum for group purchases should be agreed to by the group. He didn't say no to you. He just raised what he felt was a valid concern. I suggest that any further correspondence on this issue be handled by private e-mail between you and I. The others probably don't care and have no need to be subjected to this.
In an effort to bury the hatchet I will offer a full apology for my intial response.
